951 the river

from 951theriver.com

We've been leasing 95.1 FM since 2004 with the hope of eventually purchasing it. At this time, our leadership team has agreed that we cannot continue "renting" 95.1 FM. So, I'm sad to let you know that 95.1 The River stopped broadcasting on the evening of March 18th. Please know that we are very grateful that you've allowed us to be a part of your life.

You're always invited to listen to 104.9 the River whenever you’re in the Columbus area – or even listen online at 1049theriver.com

Here are other stations that we would recommend in Mid-Ohio:
907. FM WVMC – Mansfield, Lexington, Ashland
90.9 FM WNZR – Mt. Vernon
98.7 FM K-Love – Crestline, Bucyrus, Galion

Sincerely,

Sig

Dan Baughman

I just drove through the area on Friday, and the brief snippets I heard on 95.1 were still referencing "The River", though now that I think about it they were mentioning 104.9 The River and its website.

Current ownership information states the owner is ICS Holdings, which has owned it since 2003. I believe before that it was owned by Xavier University as part of their X-Star network.

If there is no River on 95.1, what is on the air now?

95.1 is WVXG Mount Gilead; it's a 6 kw class A signal that is usable in a car from Delaware to almost Mansfield.

Word has it that BAS broadcasting is making an offer and moving the studio onto One Coshocton Road Hill!

I had heard that Bas of Mount Vernon as well, Saga who is soon to enter the Marion market as rumored, and they could easily afford a 3rd FM in the market too.

I would like to see another Urban enter the market even the signal wouldn't be all that great... Power is painful to listen to. Or MOViN which could very well enter the market. It's needed in Columbus and it's easy to run... Alan Burns & Associates provides all the stuff to run MOViN and since it would be owned by a small company, it would be perfect.

You gotta remember that 102.5 will be moving into the market soon.

This of course will be moving into Baltimore from Zanesville, after that move is complete...96.7 will move from Jackson to Frazeysburg and 96.7 in Cambridge will move to 102.7.

Also 101.7 will move to New Albany

This cant happen until 101.7 in Urbana moves to 101.5 Enon. After that move takes place 101.7 can move in closer to the market from Heath to New Albany.

Not only that 104.3 is moving from Richwood to Grandview and 103.9 grows from 3,000 watts to 6,000 watts from their Westerville tower.

Even though they are a Class D, Otterbein/WOBN is fighting the move of 101.7 to New Albany because it would knock WOBN off the air. Personally we don't need another rim shot station in this market!!!

WTDA will never be able to double their power because of WPAY down in Portsmouth at 104.1 (class C) is protected. WTDA wanted to move the tower south by a few miles from where they are now and WPAY threw a fit. Doubling the power will make them blow a gasket!

Doesn't WHIZ have their construction permit? If so why aren't they on the air yet? Again just what Columbus doesn't need...another rim shot station! ::)

WOBN also has an app to move to 97.5, they have to way to really block the move in as they are a secondary service like all LP fm's

WTDA is currently at 5300 watts, problem is that they have a directional signal aimed to the north, They may be able to change that as WPAY made an agreement with Saga, to change their signal from a Class C to a Class C0 and reducing antenna height, making room for 104.3 to move into the SW part of the county. with a class A 6kw

WHIZ does have a construction permit, but they are still working with Bloom Township to get the zoning permits to build the new tower for the move

951 is still playing religious music. In between each song saying if you are looking for the river listen to 1049 in Columbus

My guess is that the lease of the station runs through the end of the month, so they would run programming and send listeners to 104.9, funny thing is WCVO doesnt come in very well if at all up that way

This does not make much sense since the stations 60dbu contour does cover a city of any real size. Building penetration would be marginal at best in places like Marion, Mt. Vernon and Mansfield let alone Columbus. What it does cover is a lot of farm fields and a part of Interstate 71. Traffic on 71 would be hard to turn into real revenue though. :)

Which is likely why the River never made any money on it to justify the lease.

It's currently playing a lot of "classic" Christian music with liners saying to listen to 104.9 The River.

If Saga gets Marion, they could own another FM. It may not come in crystal clear..but you could do something to make it work

And they would already have room for it ) WDIF's old studio is likely empty with the move of 106.9 to Columbus.

Didn't WTDA already bulid a new tower? I thought the 5300 watts tower was their new one.

No they are still on the WOSU tower just north of Delaware, they did get a small power increase but that was about it, there was an app to move the tower farther south but the FCC shot that one down
