Hey there, oh yeah, I talked loudly about the MAMMOTH stick/signal. This signal was so strong it butted against Zeta 94.9 in Miami and WTNT 94.9 in Tallahassee. Great signal, great station, NUFF SAID!!! I'm so glad I started this thread and energized so many folks about a truly great radio station. Oh, and by the way, stop comparing 95YNF to 98 rock, there was and is no comparison and you know that, you just look and sound cheap and silly when you do the comparison. Whatever, whomever created the downfall of this legendary station should be ashamed of themselves. In 2008 and beyond 95YNF would have have stood the test of time and would have rocked the Bay just like it did in the 80's. There are several great heritage rock radio stations that have evolved and stayed competitive around the country. Sheer greed, incompetance and other sad, negative factors led to the demise of this rocker.

WYNF appeared on 107.9 (Coral Cove) when the station signed on the air in 1995, owned by New Wave Communications. Clear Channel didn't take over until about 2 years later. The new "107.9 YNF" sounded great at first, but once the hard drive took place of the CDs and the voice tracking took the place of 24/7 live jocks, it just became bland.
I guess the same can be said about all of the Sarasota market FMs unfortunately.

95 YNF was indeed a great station that was obviously put to death by a bunch of fools that did not have a clue and still do not today. The one thing that myself and a lot of others miss about great stations such as YNF and DIZ is that they were not labeled as "new rock", or "classic rock", they were just 100% pure rock and roll...
Other great stations across our nation that came to a premature end include:
1. WNEW New York City
2. KMET LA
Stations that are still playing 100% rock and roll that have survived all of the trouble:
1. KSHE St. Louis
2. KMOD Tulsa

98Rock was NEVER a metal station in the early 90's, when YNF was still around, they played a smattering of heavy bands (Return to Serenity by Testament, Christian Woman- Type O, some of Countdown to Extinction by Megadeth and a little White Zombie), but they also dipped heavy in Nine Inch Nails, first station in Tampa to play "loser" by Beck, even threw on Southern Culture on the Skids. Yes, they had Mandatory Metallica, but they were also playing deep cuts by Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains at the time.
I miss the days of going to Peaches Music in Sarasota, weekly, and picking up a copy of the 98Rock "Hit List". Made me feel like such an "insider".
BTW, YNF Sarasota was a good time, but we never recaptured the glory and mania of 95YNF...but we never tried.

Dude... you must of tuned into 98Rock back in 93-94 cause before then they played almost every hairband that was new and had singles released... and they played the hell out of not only Metallica...but Megadeth,Anthrax,Pantera,Judas Priest,C.O.C,Testament,Ozzy,Iron Maiden,Savatage,Van Halen,Wasp,Accept....+ More....98rock played Wayyyyy more metal and hair bands then YNF.. 98Rock was New Metal.....Hair metal or just plain metal. Kunta you didnt listen to 98rock from 90-93......

Scott, you along with so many others on this strong thread are missing the BIGGER picture. I simply started this thread to extol all the wonderful things 95YNF meant until its untimely death. Comparing 95YNF to 98 Rock was/is not the point. Two different stations overlapping in era's. When 95YNF was done, 98 Rock became the only game in town, what did you expect? Here's one of my points, if 95YNF had prevailed and stayed on like other great rock radio stations (KSHE, KMOD, etc...) there would be no 98 Rock. They couldn't hold a candle to 98 Rock/Classic schlok 97.9/Z98. You and thousands of others know that to be very true.
Listen, no offense to 98 Rock, they are solid and have their own identity and set of challenges. But, in the heyday of great rock radio stations you simply cannot overlook the fact that 95YNF was truly a visionary and a GREAT rock station. No need to compare who played what, 95YNF pioneered so many things that were unchartered to 98 Rock.
The sad realization is that this station should never had died and had it lived on we would be better off. Nothing is constant and the idiots that always proclaim that "change is good" are just that, idiots. 95YNF would have "changed" and evolved, no doubt about that. Its nice to have fond memories while not always having to compare to what we have today.

Don't forget about the Black Crowes, Tesla, Tom Petty, Extreme, the Arc Angels, the Four Horsemen, Lynyrd Skynyrd '91, Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Empty Arms," Rush (Roll the Bones), Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, Chili Peppers (album out in '91), and a little band that debuted in '91 called Nirvana...if I recall 98Rock jumped all over "In Bloom" before it was released as a single (that made me actually by the casette). I don't think any of the aforementioned were considered metal.

ok, you had to indulge me into this.....what about the great rock that 98Rock couldn't even find at a Peaches record store that Charlie Logan and Scotty Phillips would play. Taxxi, YaYa, Preview, Michael Stanley Band, Ted Nugent, Sweet, Shooting Star, DIO, newer Kansas back then, not that same lame ass "Carry on my warward son", paul rodgers, bad co, michael shenker, scorpions, priest (yeah the obsure stuff), thousands of others. Obsure? sure, but did it rock, yes! Did they break new artists, yes! Did it sound fresh and powerful, yes! ;D
I guarantee you Carey Curelop and all the other PD's had better record service than anyone over at 98 rock/97.9 classic schlock/Z 98............

I dont recall them playing stevie ray vaughn...but yeah they played Rush,Extreme and alot you posted..cause they were NEW ROCK....They didnt play only Metal....but played more than YNF back in the day.
Lets not get off topic...YNF had great DJs along with 98rock...YNF was a very good station...just 98Rock played more Metal than YNF...

Staying on topic and obviously a fan of metal, you have a point. But again, I'm not comparing the library lists, I'm looking at bigger pic here. If you stacked both of these up, hands down 95YNF executed the format flawlessly, better imaging, MUCH better jocks, MUCH better stick and a broader mass appeal to those who just like rock n roll.
If they didn't play enough metal someone else would complain they played too much southern rock, blah blah blah, you get my drift?

What it comes down to is age group.. Im in my mid 30s....back then I was in my early 20s when the hairband/metal scene was in.....before the Seattle scene really got going... now people back then in their 30s loved YNF...and most are in their mid 40s-50s now...they loved the classic rock of the 70s-mid 80s and YNF served them that...along with some new rock to compete with 98rock killing them in the ratings (outside of morning drive at first) 98rock attacked the 16-29 year old listener..while YNF played to the 30-44 year old back then. 98rock wasn't 100% all metal but played more than YNF...Im sure Medlin and Big Rig can chim in on things.

You folks notice that this thread (95YNF) is the second most popular only to "98rocksux". What does that tell you about the fans of radio and radio-info.com?
Bring back the all request hour that is TRULY an all request hour, not just 2-3 holes that a jock has to "program" a song that is within "the format/daypart."

Hey scottsvb5, I find all of your 98 rock posts very interesting, and yes, you are obviously a fan of metal. However, I do not think that age has anything to do with this thread. I am only 33, and I would rather listen to a station like YNF over 98 rock, BUT, I do like metal also.
Hell, I broke my wrist at a Pantera show back in 92....
