96.1 and 101.5

What a waste of FM space for these two useless frequencies. Talk formats on both of these??? How about a REAL rock station on 101.5 and maybe an urban oldies or "regular" R&B for us old folk on 96.1??. Lexington has some serious holes in it's FM format selection.

This won't be the answer you want. The problem isn't format. The problem is signal. These are arguably the two worst FM signals trying to compete in Lexington. Rather than waste them targeting Lexington, take them back to the counties they're licensed in and service the locals.

I'm gonna have to agree with Chris. We do need a good rock station in Lexington and also an R&B station wouldn't be half bad. Both signals need to either be moved closer to LEX or they need to increase power and maybe get themseves on new towers...taller towers! But yeah...we don't need an FM simulcast of WVLK-AM.They just know that many people don't listen to AM anymore. I don't! Also, I think 100.7 WCYO should increase power / tower height. Their signal is terrible on the north side of Lex now.

I remember when 96.1 was oldies competing against Magic 105.5. 96.1 sounded pretty good when they had Stern in the morning. If I was LM I would move Sportsradio 1300 to 96.1.

All three signals (96.1, 101.5 and 100.7) have no place to improve. They are all three squeezed in and upgrades are not possible.

Also, WVLK-AM needs all the help it can get with its nighttime signal. When the station signed on the air back in 1947 it was originally licensed to Versailles, so the bulk of the night time signal goes that direction while Lexington received some of the signal. This wasn't a problem back in 1947 when Lexington was concentrated around downtown. But when the population moved to the south of town that when WVLK had problems. They have to protect many stations so the signal is very weak in that direction among others. Moving the towers was considered but was cost prohibitive. There was a discussion around Kincaid Towers to lease WLAP-AM and simulcast during the evening hours. Just prior to the breakup of Kentucky Central there was a deal on the table to lease or purchase 101.7 (now 101.5) and simulcast WVLK there to improve coverage.

Even the signal inside Kinky Towers wasn't the best. When audio was quiet you could hear other 590's on the air monitor.

If both of these mediocre signals put out something that is unique, then people WILL listen. I know these channels are weak signal wise, but on my Delco they are rock solid in Lexington. Look at 107.9. A format that is unique, but is very successful as a "rimshot". You have to admit that 101.5 is stronger than 107.9 in many areas of Lex. I always do the "in a store" test to see what I can pick up on regular radio in a store such as Best Buy and I almost can NEVER hear 107.9 unless I make adjustments to the antenna.

EMF should have made a move on 96.1-it would have made an effective simulcast with 96.3 WXKY, and probably would have been more cost effective than buying 89.9 in Georgetown and 107.1 in Danville while leasing 95.3.

What is the deal with 103.9 anyway. A simulcast of 95.3???. I don't think anyone in Lexington has a problem hearing 95.3 do they. I think what is funny is 88.1 WRFL. Have they already increased the power or what? They are crushing our local gospel station WDFB. They fight it out pretty well here in Danville but lose quickly at any distance from the transmitter. If I want to hear WRFL, all I have to do is drive ONE mile behind WDFB's antenna and there is WRFL alive and strong.

I remember 101.5 as "Arrow 101.5/WLRO" which was a good classic rock station. Be nice if they brought that back...

So, if I can buy a 50k C2, I'd be better with a crippled directional 6k A? ???
