96.1 FM translator at South Lake Tahoe

Since El Dorado County falls into the Sacramento ratings I decided that KTHO happenings would fit on the Sacramento board.

AM 590 KTHO at South Lake Tahoe has just contract to buy an FM translator on 96.1 MHz.

The FM translator is owned by Radio Assist from Twin Falls, Idaho.

It can certainly help KTHO as they receive IF interference from 1490 KOWL. If you take the 455 IF and double it, that equals 910. subtract that from 1490 and your IF comes out on 580KHz. Since KOWL's transmitter is in the middle of town it really creates problems.

Do you know of any other IF problems like this?

In regard to the FM translator, has anyone heard this on the air. When I am up at Lake Tahoe I have tuned in 96.1 and all I receive is KYMX. the transmitter site is supposed to be on Kingsbury Grade and it also the site of a translator on 92.7MHz. The 92.7 translator broadcasts Catholic Radio; if you can pick up one of the trasnlators you should be able to pick up both.

If anyone is at Lake Tahoe or if you're crusin' up there, can you check 96.1 MHz. to see if this trasnlator really exists?

I appreciate some relies.

I'm on a mini-vacation in Tahoe. 96.1 is a very noisy signal from SAC (I assume) on the truck radio. You have to park in just the right spot to hear anything. Safe to say this translator is off the air. For now at least.

Thanks for checking out the FM translator at Lake Tahoe.

Yes the 96.1 translator is off the air. My gutt feeling is that Radio Assist just told the FCC they built it and never did. I don't have any proof of that however one fact that we know for sure is.........this FM translator is off the air and the owners have not reported to the FCC that it is slient. This is supposed to be done within 10-days.

What are your thoughts on stations doing this?

I will look for your replies.

Hey - my thoughts don't count. But I figure why apply for a license if you don't plan to use it. They probably planned to sell it (which they did) but I think a lot of these plans are backfiring. I can think of several small-town licenses that are like this. I get KVHS from Concord on 90.5 in Pine Grove. No hint of the alleged translator from Calvary Chapel there. Oh but they make up for it. Their 9-watt Los Gatos translator can be heard 50 miles away in San Francisco. You sure that's 9 watts? KHGQ in Quincy was off the air for 2 years before they told the FCC. I don't think KPCO has even told them yet, and they've been off for at least 3 years that I know of. The fact is, the FCC doesn't have the budget or the manpower to actually check these things out.

If 96.1 becomes a useful signal via relay of AM 590, that's a plus in my book. Oh - and 92.7 in Tahoe is a strong signal in mono with very poor audio quality, about 30% modulation with hum. I suspect I increased their market share significantly when I tuned in to check it out.
