96.1 KZQ

Could we see Next Media change formats on this station soon? The ratings haven't been so great ever since the move from 101.7 to 96.1 plus moving the T&A Morning Show to Wave 104, seems like KZQ days are numbered. Not to add Rock 107 is beating them by the way.

Not sure what they would flip it to. Next Media doesn't seem to be putting money into it. They did when they flipped then just took the morning show to Wave for the better signal. Opinons...

They should have never moved from 101.7.

Is it my imagination or have they turned down the volume?

And they got rid of Beelzebub. I don't know the man's name, but his most famous quote, at least on the station, was "Rock 101.7 KZQ."

Isn't he also the man who says "Monster Jams" on commercials for monster trucks?

You seem surprised. Myrtle Beach radio, as a whole, has no direction or serious leadership. Revenue is way down, to refer to the staffs as "skeleton" is putting it mildly and there is no compelling content emanating from Grand Strand radio stations.

Myrtle Beach radio is, in my opinion, ready to be toe-tagged unless someone (or some group) is brave enough to get back to broadcasting. Wilmington & Fayetteville have much better stations.

Next Media certainly eviscerated KZQ's signal strength with the switch from 101.7 to 96.1. But I have to wonder how well KZQ was doing, profitwise, before the switch, for Next Media to have been willing to take a one-time injection of cash from Apex Broadcasting in exchange for gutting KZQ's signal. The frequency switch occurred September 23, 2008 - just barely before the economic implosion came to light. So 96.1 KZQ has been operating in a down economy compared to the economy 101.7 KZQ operated in. Also, who is KZQ's demographic? Is it not overwhelmingly young-to-middle-aged whites? The white birthrate in the US has been somewhat below replacement level for upwards of 35 years now. For example, according to the Census Bureau, the number of whites in the US, ages birth to 18 years, declined by 4% from December 1999 to June 2008. So, stations of KZQ's music format have a dwindling number of potential listeners. These factors, combined, have undoubtedly hurt KZQ.

Perhaps Next Media will switch WKZQ to Spanish-language. Our kind may be in decline, but the federal government certainly has the la raza population growing rapidly! Viva la KZQ.

I think part of the decline in white birth rates as to do with coming off the baby boom figures also. I think some one needs to take into account that the babyboom figures were a spike in growth rate not a trend and that may have something to do with the over all figures too by percentage.

Actually the 1946-1965 white "baby boom" was a spike only relative to the very depressed birthrate of the depression 1930s and the World War II period. Relative to the pre-depression/WWII era birthrates, the birthrates of the "baby boom" era were themselves low. Before the 1930s we had never had a birthrate below replacement level, or anywhere near it. From the 1600s to the early 20th century, the birthrate was so high that 1946-1965 is puny in comparison (except for 1861-late 1860s).

Regarding KZQ, I suspect its listenership in Ocean Drive/Cherry Grove/Little River is down from its 101.7-era levels due to its signal in that area being tremendously weakened by the 101.7-to-96,1 switch, thus helping to account for its ratings drop.

I think NextMedia should let PD of sister station Star 92.1 BILL CATCHER oversee KZQ! BILL CATCHER is a "Programming GOD"!

That gives me a idea. Why doesn't Next Media just flip 96.1 to a Hot AC or AC. Yes I know they also own Star 92.1 but one station would be AC and one Hot AC. It would work well as a combo and Bill Catcher could be PD of both stations. This would also compete themselfs well with Bob FM and Sunny.

They already have a hot AC unless they mean to return Star to AC.

No one has brought up the iPod phenomenon. People listening to this kind of music seem to have quit caring about the radio.

What I mean is one is Hot AC and the other is AC. Such as this Star 92.1 "The Best Variety" Lite 96 "Lite Rock Favorites" Makes sense and would do well to me I believe. Compete with Easy, Bob, Sunny, Movin. Myrtle Beach doesn't need another Country or Top 40 radio station.

No one has ever succeeded with Lite Rock in Myrtle Beach. Star was mainstream AC for a long time and soft enough to be considered soft rock at one point. But Yes 94.5 did what you were talking about and look how that turned out. I thought it was an obvious need. Going back to the 80s, Magic 97.7 tried and failed, and there was another station in Georgetown at 100.9, which didn't reach Myrtle Beach all that well. It didn't take long for them to go mainstream AC.

I just hope WEZV doesn't do what New 92.1 did.
