96.1 Now has flipped to Mix 96.1

Besides, Hits 105.3 is already a broad based Hot AC and does well in the ratings! That’s why I don’t see anyone picking up the Top 40/CHR mantle in San Antonio.

Exactly, it was outperforming KXXM. It might be a bit nuts, but I wonder if Univision would ever ponder KROM, whose ratings have really tanked -- seems like CHR might pair well with KBBT and KVBH in terms of being complimentary and perhaps as a sales bundle...

First, thank you David for your WorldRadioHistory.com It's an amazing resource!

So here are the core artists mentioned in the publicity release for Mix 96.1 ... Whitney Houston, Marc Anthony, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Shakira, Michael Jackson, and Celine Dion.

The English-speaking artists on this list are only heard on Classic Hits and AC stations. And when you come down to it, some AC stations now rarely play Lionel Richie and don't play Celine Dion. Do any big iHeart English-language AC stations play Celine Dion, WLTW, KOST, KODA or WASH?

I know the Bilingual AC thing is catching on. With the success of WMIA-FM Miami, we now see a number of flips including Cox-owned 100,000 watt WOEX Orlando. But that only happened a few weeks ago. Is iHeart rushing into a format that, except for Miami, hasn't really proven itself yet in any other sizeable market?

This was a missed opportunity for Univision. IMO, Univision would have given the format a Rhythmic lean to fit the SA market. At the moment, Mix 96.1 has the exact playlist as 93.9 in Miami.

Yesterday, I heard 96.1 advertising on Q101.9. My thought is Q will tweak it's format after the holidays.

With no competition for Top 40/CHR. Would Alpha Media flip 94.5 or Cox ends simulcast of Classic County on 104.9?

Both KOST and WLTW still play "Because You Loved Me," which seems to be the only song of Celine's that still gets regular AC airplay. It's the only song of hers on iHeart's corporate AC playlist as well. But I assume Mix is playing more than that one song of hers, because one song does not a "core artist" make.
For the record, "My Heart Will Go On" was the first English-language song to reach #1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart, and she's recorded in Spanish as well (although not fluent as far as I know), so she is one of the few non-Spanish-speaking artists to have success in that market. Perhaps it still tests well with Mix's intended audience?

Feels like 90%...
I was being kind. You are likely more correct. My fear is that AI picks up "consensus" views on historical subjects and makes it seem accurate. What they are doing is going to a junkyard and picking up parts in the hopes of assembling a brand new Porsche.
Definitely glad to have donated what I little I did and hope others keep sending in their old magazines, newsletters, etc.
I only wish that there were more people with trade journals, such as Gavin, FMQB and the like, who would lend or scan their issues. I just bought a new book scanner...

Mine is the "Pro" model and it can even do tabloid trade papers. It arrives next week!
Not sure how it would index...but have you ever given any thought about bumper stickers, logos, etc.? There has to be lots of people with bumper stickers of old stations, etc. that would help tell the story of some stations. Logopedia often is incomplete and has the same problem with wikipedia in terms of quality of accuracy.
I don't have the time or funds for bumper stickers and logos. If someone else wanted to curate a collection, including searching for original ones, I'd add it to the site as I have about 6tb of free space on the server now.

I'm glad such a good job has been done with station "hit lists". Those are fun to see, and many also have DJ pics and logos. I should probably link to my site.

What many don't understand is that, while a good portion of my collection comes from contributed or loaned publications, much of it has been bought at auctions or on eBay. When I got started, I found a fellow who rescued the collection of Broadcasting Magazine from a closing library... but it cost over $7000 to buy it and then hundreds more for the shipping.

Several here have suggested that I accept advertising. But many of the publications I have allow use only if the site is non-commercial. This is how I have magazines like Billboard.

The real issue I have is time. I spend 50 hours to 60 hours a week on the site, and am backed up. Approaching 60 million page views, but it is hard to get help on the actual work. Example: I have wanted for years someone to write a synopsis of the books I have, and nobody has come foreword.

I´ve mentioned this before, but such a format in my opinion only works where there is a first generation immigrant population that listened to stations that played English language music in their country of birth. Those would be very upper income people who left nations like Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the like because of socialist governments, crime and violence or a bad economy.

The first generation immigrants to most of the Southwest come from mostly rural areas "back home" and have very limited educations... usually little or no high school and often much less. They did not go to middle and upper class "bilingual schools" (very, very common in Latin America) and don't listen to or like American hit music.

The cities where the Hispanic population fits that profile are ones like Miami and Orlando and maybe Palm Beach and Atlanta. That's about it.

It will be interesting to see if I am wrong. But music tastes generally don't change with first generation immigrants. Heck, when I go on to YouTube I play cumbias and vallenato and salsa, not REO Speedwagon.

The model for the iHeart Miami station is WFID in Puerto Rico, which has a 40 year history of being an AC station that played about 80% English language music and 20% Spanish language AC songs. The iHeart senior VP of its Hispanic operations was formerly the PD of WFID before moving to Miami.

What some are not aware of is that not all songs that are hits in the US are hits in Latin America. And some songs that are English language hits in Latin America may not be as big in the US. Going way back to when I had Top 40 stations in Ecuador, CCR was bigger than the Beatles and we had lots of hits from the UK that did not make it in the US... Cliff Richard comes to mind.

Greg Blouch has one of the largest radio sticker collections that I am aware of, and he has been slowly digitizing them for his blog (and whenever I need an old logo!) However, he is not a "radio" guy, and sometimes has trouble identifying mystery stickers, and certainly doesn't have all the timespans for when the logos were used. I'm sure this is a hobby for him and time is a great consideration as it is for all of us, but his collection would be a great candidate to be turned into an index of sorts.

KROM is not flipping. KROM is the flagship Regional Mexican format that they do nationwide. They're not changing it even if it's not working in the moment for one city.

Neither.

Has anyone heard this station over the air? I picked it up in Houston this morning and it sounded like a low quality web stream

I doubt the format will succeed long-term without tweaks to more English 80s & 90s titles.

Below is a snippet from the census. One point that stands out is the number of Spanish speakers is shrinking in SA.
  • 2013–2017: Just over 33% of people over the age of five spoke Spanish at home
  • 2018–2022: 30.8% of people over the age of five spoke Spanish at home

Okay, point taken.
