96.1 The Beat is now Channel 96.1

That logo is awful. Ugh! It's a ripoff of WFLZ/Tampa's logo, except FLZ's actually looks good...the font and sizing here just look weird. When will they learn that you can't always just substitute your name/frequency into someone else's logo?

Not altogether surprised by the name change. The station's pretty good, but Kiss is absolutely excellent and has heritage in the market over WIBT, especially now that The Beat moniker is history. It'll be a tough fight and if CC doesn't bring their A-game, it's probably not winnable. But I wish them luck!

Bring John Jay and Rich to Charlotte!
Like that will happen...

Yeah, I was expecting a better logo. I don't like the name really. I was hoping like a "Radio Now" type name.

Changing the name to try and help those sinking ratings. Could it work maybe. Are the people over at CBS Radio Charlotte scared by no means. KISS 95.1 got nothing to worry about.

It seems like they need to change more than the logo and the music if they're going to take a serious run at KISS. Supposedly, no change in on-air personnel including Brotha Fred. I doubt they'll have more of an impact than they did as The BEAT.

They could've at least use the logo they use for "Channel 933" San Diego and "Channel 955" Detroit. I don't like the new FLZ-like logo.

Other than the logo the name change was needed. They should now advertise on the streets as a "new station" to grab 95.1's audience.

If you listened at all, you knew change was coming, half the jocks were making jokes about the station ceasing to exist as we knew it... ie at least a name change... lol Now someone just needs to get on CC traffics' butt... I hate hearing commercials in the evening mix show for something that ended earlier that day or the previous day...

In this day and age of computer automation how can this happen? Seems like it would be an easy matter to program a kill date and time into the audio file. With the reduction of back office support staff this will only get worse!

How can that happen? It's called "TRAFFIC DIRECTOR LAZINESS" or sales laziness when filling out the order, they are just to lazy to add another line for a separate run date and time the last day of the schedule, and they could care less how bad it sounds on the air, that's just they way some sales and traffic people are, they are not "On Air" people.

In my opinion the station sounds good until they throw in a lame post-grunge rock song which sounds totally out of place next to Kesha and Nelly. Nickelback, Daughtry, and the likes belong on hot AC. The mostly rhythmic playlist of 96.1 with the occasional rock song thrown in sounds awful. I think the station will definitely fail. Just look at what has happened to the ratings since they dumped the true rhythmic format. Kiss is the real CHR in Charlotte and Channel 96.1 will not be able to touch them. Dump the rock, bring back the rhythmic-leaning-pop format or change formats entirely.

If they want to go in a more rock oriented direction, a good model to follow is CHR KLAL in Little Rock.

Listened for a few minutes today. First things first, WHY did they stop speeding up the music? I know the average listener doesn't notice, but to me it sounds like a total trainwreck when a station that's sped the hell out of its music for years suddenly stops. Not to mention the fact that Kiss continues with the practice...makes Channel sound slower. Ugh.

The station doesn't sound bad, but there's no real substance to these most recent changes. Changing from The Beat to Channel is essentially just throwing on a new coat of paint. The music is the exact same, the staff is the exact same (except now Fred will be broadcasting from Chicago) - hell, even the imaging voice and positioner are the same as they were during The Beat's latter days. All of this doesn't amount to a bad station, but it certainly doesn't amount to any real change. I project that Kiss will sustain its dominance.

So, what happen to THE BEAT competing with POWER 98? I don't know much bout the Charlotte market, but didn't CC launch THE BEAT after Radio One killed HOT 92.7?

How is that Rock orientated if they add Nickelback between Kesha & Nelly or Daughtry? And also how does having Nickelback or Daughtry between Kesha & Nelly make it sound bad? That's what CHR's are SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE!

I actually lived in Charlotte when 96.1 The Beat was created, and IMO it was definitely designed to compete against Kiss 95.1 (which I'm pretty sure topped the market at that time)

As far as playing Nickelback and Daughtry, Kiss 95.1 does that, and right now they're killing them in the ratings - also with The Link flipping to AC, I think both stations are probably rushing in to try and grab that former-HAC audience

Thats just part of the KISS 95.1 playlist taken from yes.com, I don't see nothing wrong with having "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" into "King of Anything" or "Who Dat Girl" into "September"

^I actually think it makes a song sound a lot better when it sounds different from the previous song (to me, Daughtry/September sounds much better after a rhythmic song, cause you can appreciate the sound of it more, than if it were just stuffed between Nickelback and Lifehouse tracks)

I've listened to Channel 961 and can't find any fault with it, really. I like the music. It might not top 95.1, but I think it will do enough for Clear Channel. Likely cheap to run.

I agree with Carolinaradio, I have been listening to 96.1 the past three days and it sounds very good, especially the short mix show last night. Just about the only things that still make 95.1 top my list is their jingles and music tempo.

Honestly, Kiss 95.1 and Channel 96.1 are extremely similar musically. 96.1's playlist looks tighter (all the hits...seriously!), with 95.1 being a little more open.

I see Sick Puppies, Kesha, GaGa, Maroon 5, Eminem, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Script, Train, Taylor, Lady A, etc. on 96.1. Looks like a mainstream CHR in 2010 to me.

One doesn't look more rhythmic than the other. Hopefully as we enter a new year, Channel will improve their presentation.
