96.1 The Beat

Why does The Beat have Beacause of You by Kelly Clarkson on the playlist? Isn't 96.1 The Beat a hip hop station just like Power 98 is? Both I believe are Rhythmic/CHRs. So why is 96.1 The Beat putting Kelly Clarkson mixed in with hip hop music? Makes no sense.

Most likely it's research. That's what fuels most of the decisions in radio today. One of the things I dislike about radio today is it's so predictible.

Radio stations have become a bit narrow in their focus actually. There was a time when CHR/Top 40 were one in the same. In other words the station played the top selling records no matter what format they fell into.

Listening to the typical oldies station today you wouldn't guess that the top 40 stations in the '60's played music by Sammy Davis Jr.,Frank Sinatra and Henry Mancini right along with the Beatles, Stones, and Stevie Wonder.

If you look at the way it used to be then Kelly Clarkson isn't as much of a streach. I do realize these are different times.

Actually WIBT is a Rhythmic Top 40 that targets a more broader audience, while WPEG is purely straight-ahead R&B/Hip-Hop and caters towards african-americans. Just because they both sound the same doesn't mean they're going to play the same kind of music all the time.

The Beat will drop Kelly Clarkson soon. If they don't, it might be mistaken for an ... oldie.

Heh.

Hey Egg!

Thanks for checking in! Hope you're doing well. Still no oldies station here
:(
