96.3 ESPN - Coming Soon

Good semi-investigative work. Give the man a raise. Its coming soon.
Finally, a better signal for espn NY.

Eventhough nothing is official about the sale or lease of WQXR to ESPN, th Post has reported that the New York Times isn't making any money, and the reccession we're in is putting the NYT further into debt.

*IF* Classical music cease to exist at 96.3 FM, it may be more like a lease of WQXR to ESPN. A sale of the station would mean it may take up to eight months before we see any changes.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Whatever credence might or might not be ascribed to that domain registration, I've suspected for a long time this day would come before too long. Also, I doubt there would be another commercial signal that would pick up QXR's format.

If it happens, that would leave very few commercial classical stations. I can only think of KDFC in the Bay Area, WCRB in Boston, WFMT in Chicago, KING in Seattle, WCLV in Cleveland/Lorain, OH, KDB in Santa Barbara, KLEF in Anchorage, AK.

It's ok with me if I can still read the New York Times every day. However, 1050 AM with classical programming wouldn't do it for me.

WQXR's owners, The New York Times, is hemorrhaging cash.

Do the math.

What will happen to 1050AM--infomercials?

Most likely ESPN Deportes. If ESPN does take over 96.3, I could see them switching on HD and broadcasting ESPN Deportes and possibly even Radio Disney on the subchannels as well.

Yikes, .....Well THAT would certainly free up another preset. Now I just need a portable HD Radio (that ISN"T oversized) so I can always get WNYC HD2.
I guess I'd have to turn to WBGO 88.3 jazz, when I need to escape from the high paced atmosphere.

Will they keep Mike&Mike in the morning? It kind of makes more sense with a national show in the morning and a local show in the afternoon.

Could the classical format continue on HD2 or HD3? Or any possible suburban signals that would pick up the format? (I'm an interested outsider in Houston.)

I always thought that WQXR and WFMT would be the finalists in commercial classical's death pool, but it looks like I'll replace 'QXR with KING for that distinction.)

WCRB and WCLV aren't even the originals, as both are now rimshot spinoffs of the original full market signals.

Hopefully WQXR will at least get a dignified sendoff after 73 years of classical in NYC, first on AM, then AM/FM, then FM.

Things today are sure a lot different from the WNCN/WQIV fiasco in the mid-70's.

Here is something I threw together a few months ago, probably still mostly current.

With the show as popular as it is, I would bank on it. Especially if ESPN Radio stations agree to carry a certain number of programming hours per day. I'd like to find out which ESPN Radio affiliates abide by this edict but run their own local programming in lieu of "Mike & Mike".

I have a particular fondness for WCCC, as I worked at WTMI(93.1), Miami
which begat Beethoven (internet) Radio in Miami
which moved to Hartford
which begat WTMI(1290am), Hartford
which became WCCC on 1290 and 106.9-HD2.

963espn.com now redirects to the espn963.com site for the affiliate in AR...the plot thickens....

Does this mean W244AS (96.7 in Oakhurst, NJ) will be gone?
No, all translators would continue relaying their parent station.
W244AS and W279AJ would continue to relay (translate) their primary station on 96.3.

Could this whole thing be a bad joke?

OK everyone, I spent a long time figuring out how to clean my list up, embed the URLs, and then actually did it
Slight imperfections exist because only the Links are emboldened
My only revisions were to eliminate a W-Bach station which has gone country and
to add KING Symphonic Favorites which will be on line only, at some future time
Also, I went alphabetical by state (then city) rather than numerical by frequency
So, I present my finished product:
