96.5 Jack Is Doing Well

How come 96.5 Jack is doing so well in the Seattle, WA market? I guess people like that format in Seattle then in other places such as NYC and Chicago where those two Jack stations aren't doing well to say the least. Just wanting to know why KJAQ is doing so well. Thanks....

Since I sell nationally I might be able to help.
JACK's launch well when supported by huge amounts of television
advertising. Such was the case in Dallas, Denver, LA, St Louis
Portland and Seattle. In each of these markets JACK peaked at top
three in 25-54 adults. St Louis had, by far, the biggest launch of
all.

At one year the JACK stations begin a rapid decline. Denver and Dallas
were the first two JACK's and are 50% of their peak numbers.

The JACK's that don't launch well, generally failed to use enough television
advertising to support the station, or the market was covered by a number of
rock leaning stations that already provided enough variety. JACK has also not
done well in markets with huge urban stations. (Atlanta, Washington DC, Memphis
etc)

JACK seems to be following the pattern of the 80's stations five years ago. Seattle, Portland and St Louis saw the biggest launch of these stations as well.
Hope that helps. Advertising Age, not too long ago detailed the dangers to
media buyers purchasing JACK stations. They are the latest fad, not much more.

There are no JACK-branded stations in Atlanta, Washington DC or Memphis, nor any Variety Hits stations.

bwahahaha...smmmmmmmackkkk. lol Funny stuff. IDK...KJAQ is keeping my interest more and more, at least when I'm within range of it. It's nice to have something that is somewhat different....somewhat.

Mix in DC is somewhat VH, but not a jockless Jack-type.

Dave in Atl is AAA, for those familiar with the name but not the station.

They no longer exist, which is my point All never got out of the box with
numbers. It was branded "Dave" in Atlanta. It started JACK style and went to
Triple A. MIX in DC, went "Whatever" for four months, with 80% JACK style
programming then leaned back HOT/AC. JACK in San Diego is suffering a similar
fate because the market has several stations that play a huge variety of rock.

In Baltimore CBS Radio has 102.7 Jack-FM which is doing well ratings wise. But I think CBS was foolish for putting a Jack station in Baltimore. Reason being CBS Radio also owns Mix 106.5 which is Hot AC, so Jack is kind of hurting that station. But if both stations do well I guess their won't be a problem.

Only problem is with Jack in NYC and Chicago, as they might not be Jacks sooner or later.

DAVE was a failed try to boost WZGC by adding a few "JACK"-like liners, but just reshuffled music. MIX (and WPLJ in New York) added songs and promoted that "you never know what we'll play next" but never went even close to "JACK". San Diego lost their successful morning show to Clear Channel's MY-FM (new multi-million morning show starts in January).

Uhhh, there never was a Jack in...

...Memphis. Nor a "Variety Hits station. The only thing close is FM 100 (WMC-FM) and their "Whatever Weekends" (which are doing quite well for them). Other than that, they are (and have been) a straightforward Hot AC.
