96.5 WOXL On A Slippy Slope?

Seems 96.5 WOXL/Asheville has been slipping since they shifted their music more to the 70's with a Rock edge. I realize they had to skew younger to stay alive, but it appears they've lost their way! Most of the oldies stations have indeed switched to late 60's/70's hits...but it sure sounds like this station has taken the music much further. The ratings are apparently trending down. Anybody know why the station has lost it's focus?

booger!

Go to be careful with the progression to 70s music. Remember, PROgressive, not AGGressive. If the 70s are put in too quickly it can be a shock to the core. WMJI/Cleveland is a good example of how to slowly assimilate to 70s. WMJI started doing it in 1997 - long before it was the "thing to do". SLOWLY, over 8 years, WMJI PROgressed into the 70's to where they are now as a 60s/70s station. You can't go from a core 60s to a 60s/70s in one year. You'll definately feel the brunt from the core.

I wonder if the same can be said about KOLA 99.9 FM Riverside-San Bernardino. They sound almost like a totally different radio station from 18 months ago and their ratings have really slipped. Here is an example of a two hour block I noted on the LA board a few weeks ago:

1:50 pm – 4:00 pm 3/29/06

Rich Girl – Hall & Oats – 1977*
stopset--------------------------
Too Late to Turn Back Now – Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose – 1972
Brandy – Looking Glass – 1972*
Proud Mary – CCR – 1969
Love Train – The O’Jays – 1973*
stopset -------------------------
Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band – 1977
One of These Nights – The Eagles – 1975*
Honky Tonk Women – Rolling Stones – 1969*
You’re So Vain – Carly Simon – 1973*
all the above either #1* or #2 hits on Billboard
Old Time Rock & Roll- Bob Seger – 1979
(did a double-take when I saw this one peaked at #28 on Billboard)
stopset -------------------------
You Are the Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder – 1973*
Magic Carpet Ride – Steppenwolf – 1968 (peaked at #3)
Your Mama Don’t Dance – Loggins & Messina – 1972-73 (peaked at #4)
stopset -------------------------
Operator - Jim Croce – 1972 (peaked at #17)
Some Kind of Wonderful – Grand Funk – 1975 (peaked at #3)
What’s Going On- Marvin Gaye – 1970 (did NOT hit #1 on Billboard!)
Come and Get Your Love – Redbone – 1974 (peaked at #5)
Show Me the Way – Peter Frampton – 1976 [they played the LP version]
(OK trivia- which peaked higher on Billboard—“Show Me the Way” or “I’m In You”)
stopset -------------------------
Lean On Me – Bill Withers – 1972* [played the LP version]
Spirit In The Sky – Norman Greenbaum – 1970 (peaked at #3)
Brother Louie – Stories – 1973*
Stopset--------------------------
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me – Elton John – 1974 (peaked at #2)
[didja know Toni Tennille, Carl Wilson, and Bruce Johnston did backing vocals?]
It’s the Same Old Song – Four Tops – 1965 (peaked at #5) [oldest song in the two hours]
Rock On – David Essex – 1974 (peaked at #5)
Jive Talkin’ – BeeGees – 1975*
---------------------------------
Sundown – Gordon Lightfoot – 1974*

If they've changed a lot in the last 18 months it's b/c they didn't progress early at a slower rate. Now, it would appear, they're trying to play catch up. Again, the example of WMJI, where I worked for six years (94-2000) the station progressed to it's present 60s/70s (and some 80s) back in 1997. It wasn't done overnight. Evolution not Revolution.

Looks like the center" or core of the station is 1972-73. Which means the power years should be 1969-73. Secondary years 65-69 and 74-78. IMO they need to accent more with the secondarys, then come back to center for 1-2 songs.

And it's not just the years/era, but also the selection. Peter Frampton? That's classic rock/hits. Seems like they're tring to be "oldies" and classic sh*ts.

Personally I think a Pre-63 could be done once per daypart..a "jukebox classic" if you will. Throw a bone to the upper core.
