96.5 WRCX - Brockton

Oh boy.. While driving through the West Gate Mall parking lot in Brockton I picked up a pirate playing techno music, identifing itself as WRCX-FM Brockton. Brockton is quickly becoming the new hot bed for pirate radio.

I hear a pirate on 96.5 usually playing Reggae from somewhere south of Boston, that's probably it. They're even in the Brockton online Yellow Pages phone book:

Power FM WRCX
69 North Montello, Brockton, MA 02301
(508) 587-3337

It comes in strong enough around greater Boston to interfere with the fringe of Classic Rock 96.5 WMLL "The Mill" Manchester NH, especially on any south facing terrain.

Anyone wanna call them up and freak them out by saying you're from the FCC and are coming down to
shut 'em down? ;) As far as I know they are not legitimately licensed as an LPFM or anything...

As I'm promoting a reggae label I thought I'd give them a call. Oh well...it might be worth putting a CD in the mail to see if it gets there...

Some of the pirates are pretty bold (and/or crazy....and/or dumb).

My friend in another market told me of a pirate that actually showed up at the city's fireworks display with a remote kit, table and banner!

Some weeks later, when the FCC raided the studios (they had a request line and the mailing address was the studio location!) the local newspaper carried a story quoting the "general manager" as being dumbfounded as to why he was being shut down.

Hoo boy.

There are 2 seperate 96.5s. One is in Dorchester, and the other in Brockton. The 96.5 in Brockton is at the former location of 101.3. 101.3's programming is now on 102.1 in Brockton, and still also on 102.1 in Dorchester where it always was.

The former 102.1 in Brockton was on 105.3 last week, but hasn't been on most of the week. The 103.1 that was killing WODS (and others), and 98.9 that was killing WPLM have both been off for at least a week now.

Yes.. There are two different pirates on 96.5, one in Brockton and one in Dorchester. You can hear them blend in the Randolph area of route 24. I heard the DJ on the Brockton pirate say today; "stand by for a bigger, stronger WRCX coming in the new year". It leads one to believe that they'll be juicing up the power, however, I'd suggest trying to get the strong hum out of their signal first.

The pirate on 102.1 in Brockton appears to be well engineered, they were doing a "mix show" live from Atlanta last night. Sounds like they're using an ISDN connection. Looking through the FCC database, the CEO of WRCI has been visited from the Quincy field offce on a few occasions in the past. I guess the next step would be a NAL or even a raid.

Happy Holidays!

Stand by for a visit from the FCC shutting them down. Years ago there was WHDL (from Brockton, IIRC)--
I think it was 102.1, a pirate which later went to higher power--and that resulted in a complaint that got them shut down.

What's an NAL, a letter telling them to cease and desist? (update: typed "Pirate radio NAL" into search engine and got the definition. Notice of Apparent Liability. "The station or company issued the NAL is permitted 30 days either to pay the proposed fine or to respond in writing.")

btw with Rumba on the air, offering more programming to the Hispanic community, you wonder if there will
be fewer pirates. After all one objective of these unlicensed broadcasters is to get content out on the air
which isn't there...but now it is. (Though I wouldn't doubt that some of these pirates actually sell advertising, too! Radio Free Vermont--by co-incidence, another 96.5--which ran up in Rutland VT in the 90s used to
run PSAs and ads (i have them on tape and they were advertising a golf driving range...)

NAL.... Notice of Apparent Liability, FCC speak for you owe us some cash pay up.

Seen on a frequent basis if you receive the FCC daily digest by email
