96.7 Gaga FM

I reallly like how Kiss FM is promoting Lady Gaga in Austin tonight by launching Gaga FM. Its a cool and innovative promotion for a radio station! Don't you think?

Not that original - Mega did that with the launch of the new single. An HD station beat them to it months ago. Albeit, I'm sure a lot more people are hearing it on Kiss FM ;)

That happens all the time in the TV news biz. The also-ran in the market does something special. Then the top dog copies it and everyone goes, "Wow! How did they think of that?" They used to get away with that. But now in this youtube world, someone posts the stories side-by-side with the incriminating time stamps.

Would be funnier if they called themselves "Radio Gaga" like the Queen song from 1984.

From what I heard on 60 minutes, she named herself after that song.

I would not make fun of Mega as far as listenership goes, they do have Android and Blackberry apps, and will be launching an iPhone app soon. Quite a few people I know listen to them on their mobile phones, that is the future of radio after all. it may be an HD station but you don't have to have an HD radio to hear it anymore and their listener base is growing. I do not listen to Kiss because it is a lame excuse for a top 40 station, they are just a cookie cutter, like every other cooky cutter station in the country, they are not innovative, they are boring. I do not listen FM radio in Austin because it SUCKS, other than Mega. Our FM is a wasteland. I know everybody has different opinions and likes of music but this is my opinion. Why listen to FM when there is a whole world of streaming stations that have way more variety and choice by using your phone, or iPods and other devices.

Well said.

Not enough to show up in the ratings. The streams of four Austin stations showed up in the PPMs. Mega is a no show.

Fred, you are correct that the stream for KBPA HD2 has not shown up in the ratings... at least not yet - But I do see the metrics from our streaming provider and the numbers are growing. And thank you for the kind words JDawg, we really do try and run Mega like a 'real' station and keep in fresh. We believe if we are asking you to either invest in an HD Radio or download an app to your phone, we should be giving you a worthwile product.

Back to the original thread, good for Kiss FM for doing the Gaga bit last week. I didn't hear it, but I know several years ago when the Rolling Stones came to town, we re-imaged BOB-FM and called it 'Mick FM' that day. Every piece of imaging was re-cut, and it was quite a task... but it was fun and a bit unexpected which IMHO makes for good radio.

I meant no offense to the quality of the programming, just a reality check for where the ratings stand now. I am a compulsive fact-checker.

BTW-- Has anyone considered using HD to bring back HI-Fi? I would love a station that featured the great Rat Pack singers of the 50s and 60s mixed with today's singers doing tunes in that style. My first PD job was at an MOR station and I fell in love with the music.

Mega is a good station. I like it way better than some of the other stations in Austin. Its has a 93.9 M.I.A. feel to it (M.I.A. is a dance station in Miami). I have an HD radio and I listen to Mega, but not everyone I know does. I do wish there was a way to bring Mega back to the analog airwaves. But ill bet anything the big shots at Emmis wont budge. They want to keep there money invested into crappy stations like KGSR and 101x

I will give props out to 101X for airing Hypersonic Radio on Saturday nights. It is the only true Dance/Electronica show on FM in Austin and the fact that a Alternative/Rock station airs it shows how those two music scenes mix. Many people who like Dance/Electronica I find also like music like 101X plays. Im not a fan of Alternative Rock but I do like how there is a variety of people who listen to Dance/Electronica.
