96.7 moving on the dial

This will help their coverage. Wonder if a new flip is next? I wouldn't think all this is to continue to reboradcast 5k audio from Bloomberg.

Sorry....WHBE is moving.

R&R is correct. It's WHBE (not WEHM) moving on the dial.

Old habits are hard to break

WHBE is moving.

At first I thought to myself too, "Cool, WEHM is getting a boost...er, wel the old EHM." Yep, I did it too. That is just like all of us still referring to 740 as WGSM.

This is good news for LI Radio. 96.7 was really limited in area because of severe Boxing-In by WKHL and others. The move to 96.9 makes absolute perfect sense. I don't think the dynamic range of the station (the contours on the map) will increase all that much, but the actual listening area will because Co-Channel interference will now be First Adjacent interference, a much better scenario. This should also give them the future opportunity to perhaps be granted future power upgrade and/or relocation further west.

So why 96.7 in the first place? To make a long story short, it was the easiest way to go at the time. The FCC allocated certain channels to certain locales. 96.7 was the last open alottment on the east end. All stations after that needed to have an engineering study performed, and then the channel added to the table of allocations. I'm sure studies were needed to move one click up the dial, but it is well worth it for everybody. It is an improvement for WHBE East Hampton, and it is an improvement too for WKHL in CT. Its also an improvement for all of us radio fans, as it is one more spot on the dial to check out!

Hey, isn't there a new station out there on 88.7 too? Or is that just yet another translator for CT Public Radio?

So, when the tropo hits here, I can expect to hear a mess of WHBE and WFPG here, and even up in Long Island and Connecticut. Right now, if there's strong tropo, WFPG booms in everywhere. At least it will be easier to get WKHL.
______________

Re: WHBE is moving... into a mess here

I know LP FMs get virtually no protection and New London County isn't necessarily WHBE's market, but it does have a fair signal in much of Southeastern CT. When it moves to 96.9 with the same signal, it will be an absolute mess with LP FMs at 96.9 in Ashaway, RI & Norwich, CT that already get some problems from WTKK Boston without tropo. Are these stations supposed to move to, say, 96.7 & 97.1?

This is more for the CT board, but what's the deal with 96.9 WWBW Norwich anyway? They're across the river from Mohegan Sun. For months, they have been shuffling various assorted greatest hits albums, sometimes replaying songs 3 times back to back, with some stuff played at inexplicably slow speed with a nasty buzz that sounds like someone hooked up the CD jack wrong! With severe interference from New London up past Norwich, maybe at least it can be caused by programming other than months of stunting.

I didn't even know those LPFMs were there. According to the records they aren't moving either. It is actually really lucky that WHBE didn'y move until now, because had they done this several years ago, under what was then the LPFM spacing rules they might not have been granted construction permits.

At first I thought you were talking here about WMOS, but then realized you were not. What's the deal with WMOS 104.7 anyway these days? I know that Mohegan Sun had been LMAing the station from AAA and were actually broadcasting from a studio right off the lobby of the casino complex. Now I thought that back in '03 AAA had sold the station to Mohegan Sun, but it turns out that it was really sold to Citadel. So is Mohegan Sun still running WMOS, or has Citadel taken over operations? I know that even though the station is based on the tip of the South fork of Long Island NY, that the target audience is Southeastern Connecticut, mainly New London/Mystic area.

WMOS is kind of a mysterious station to most of us Long Islanders because the signal is so far out there, that most of us can't hear it. Same goes for WHBE, at least now anyway. We'll see come Friday morning if that changes or not.

According to their website, WMOS is a joint venture between Mohegan Sun & Citadel. I have not been to Mohegan Sun's Casino in years, and the one time I was there I did not try it, but can the station be picked up there?

Re:WHBE making CT into a mess

Yes, WMOS 104.7's signal can be picked up well into Norwich and Uncasville, near the casino. Ironically, the signal does suffer when you go deep into the parking garages. They should get a translator and put it atop the casino.

WWBW-LP is 20 miles east of where it really should be. Check out the map of where the WWBW-LP transmitter IS, then go map Higganum. Thats where it SHOULD BE!

WHBE is on 96.9

It doesn't do much damage to the LP station near the CT/RI border. However, WHBE and WTKK were fighting each other in Rhode Island until about exit 3 on I95, where WTKK took over. I don't know what it will be like when the tropo hits.
______________
