96.7 The Legend Is Already Here

No surprise now that Christmas is over but 96.7 is now The Legend playing classic country. I first noticed it around 1:00 AM.

The old Lite-FM website is up and so is their new one at http://967thelegend.com

Just what we needed ... another country station. Thanks Crap Channel.

Most likely another lame attempt at "radio."
If done correctly (which they probably will not) it could be a good niche format.
Sweetdick, and the others at The Bear, have nothing to fear....a radio station in a closet will not hurt them at all

CC is trying to use 96.7 as a flank for the Eagle. Problem is the "Bull" is stuck in the middle much like 96rock was with 99x and Z93. 99x hit the younger end, Z was hitting the upper end and 96 was stuck in no man's land. If they went younger they upset the upper end, if they went older, they upset the younger end.

The "Bull" is in the same situation. If they do new country and go after Kicks they lose their upper end, if they go older they alienate the younger demo.

So if they take away a few listeners from the Eagle they can go after Kicks with a little more vigor. Problem is they may end up losing to the "Legend" and "Eagle."

I dont know why the CC powers that be insist on trying to make this an Atlanta signal. If they could get it thru their heads it will never be more than a local south metro station they would be much better off. I remember going into different places of business in PTC and Newnan and this station would be playing for their customers....The Buzz in Subway...Lite....in hair cutter...you name it people around here knew about it and knew it was a PTC/Newnan station...even tho there was not much local info on the air. There is over half a million people that this signal can reach....just sell it to someone that will make it a local station again.

History of this signal

WBUS in April 1985
WWER in March 1987
WMKJ in November 1987
WLDA in October 2000
WXVV in October 2001
WBZY in April 2002
WVWA-FM in May 2005
WLTM in January 2007

CC has changed the format/calls more than I change underwear :p

You're right...it's purpose is to be a flanker.
But.....it appears CC can't run flankers either! (Evidence: Buzz, Lite)
Joe Pedicino's group would love to have this signal.....and they would make it a strong SOUTHSIDE station which would do well in the southern county mechanicals. AND.....make plenty of money!

If you go to the WPCH (96.5 - a C3 licensed to Gray, GA) it links you to the 96.7 "Legend" web site. That's the Macon market. Guess it's a simulcast....

The imaging is horrible, the voiceover guy sounds like he's doing a bad imitation of a 60 year old dude rancher from the southwest.

They promoting ten in a row, but how hard is it to play ten songs in a row when in classic country your songs average 2 minutes 15 seconds a piece! (ok maybe slight hyperbole)

You're not off by much, caller10...

I haven't heard this station yet but from the sound of things here, I'm not missing anything.

The calls were changed 8 times in 22 years.

Uh.. Don't you... You may want to consider.... Uh.... Why don't you....

Nah.. Ain't going there. 8)

Nothing I can't get my fix of listening to the country show on Album 88. Matt plays a lot of great classics I haven't heard in a long time.

::);D.....actually CC has had control of this signal for only about 6 of those 22 years, and I lost track of format changes as I believe that changed more often than the calls.....maybe someone can help with that trivia.....those are the years I am referring to... :D and in retrospect I guess I did change more often :p

Clear Channel does not have a history of great country programming. They have seemed to botch it up anywhere they make changes. The Bull in Atlanta is going nowhere, The Bull in Birmingham is D.O.A and now the Legends.

Citadel has nothing to worry about.

Actually this frequency dates back almost 60 years. 96.7 was the longtime FM side of WCOH AM in Newnan. The antenna was located on the WCOH tower until 1985. WCOH just celebrated 60 years on the air in early December. The station signed on as an AM and FM in 1947 although the FM was at 92.3 originally. Sometime during the next few years the station moved to 96.7 and would remain WCOH FM until 1982. Then owner Dallas Tarkenton changed the call letters to WRNG in late 82. The station was sold in 1985 and a new tower was built north of Madras GA along I-85 with hopes of serving Atlanta as the WBUS "The Bus", an urban format. The class A signal did not cover Atlanta and the Bus soon "ran out of gas". The station ran a sattellite fed old school urban format for a time as WWER and later in 1987 Tarkenton regained control of the frequency. The studio was moved back to the WCOH facility in Newnan and the station had a most successful 13 year run as South Metro's Magic 96.7. By the summer of 2000 Clear Channel owned the station, had moved the transmitter to Tyrone and switched the station to "Wild 96.7. I lost track of the formats and calls soon thereafter.

You're right Tenn Radio Boy, CC has nothing offer that should trouble Citadel. Citadel has other issues they
have to address. I was just checking the stock quotes of several of the big broadcast companies and Citadel's stock, just weeks ago, tanked at $1.91. Compared to it's peak of $11.01, earlier in the year, thats
quite a drop.
