96.7 The Twister

Overall, music selection and imaging are good. No morning show to speak of. The only real issue I see is the signal in some areas. Any constructive thoughts?

Musically they're alright. Always have been. Gotta disagree with the imaging though. It's low-rent and sounds like it. They have some credibility now that Jeremy's doing nights but their signal and incessant need to call out The Wolf even though they don't have the stones to beat them are the big hinderances to their success...and if I see one apologist post about them "doing what they're supposed to be doing," I'll puke.

I'm sorry but I don't buy the "we don't care if they suck as long as they damage The Wolf" attitude. That's aiming for mediocrity. If they're taking from The Wolf why is The Wolf rebounding while KSCS and The Twister are flat?

One thing that was pointed out to me is the there are few songs that KPLX isn't playing that are on the air in other markets.
An example is Boondocks by Little Big Town.
My kid tells me that that they play it on on the Twister. Interesting.

The problem IS the signal, that it's actually allowed to get out beyond the farmland that the tower sits in.

Twister was created to make a one-two punch (KSCS [skewing older] plus KTYS [skewing younger]) to knock over KPLX. While the numbers, when added together, do exceed KPLX, it's not by much. And try to sell a spot on Twister for the KSCS price. Ain't happening.

This little experiment has run its course. The Young Country format has run its course. Now let's get back to "Memories 96.7" or some other canned ABC Radio format and get back to business. Recess is over. I know Chulo and Peck and, God bless 'em, they've tried to make something happen over there, but the station will never be anything more than a bottom feeder, regularly beaten by 27 other stations. The format was a dumb, outdated idea at the time, and time has shown that it's just not going to ever happen there. I don't know where else the young rednecks are tuning to, but it's not there.

Yeah The Twister is doing what The Wolf used to musically. They're taking chances. The Wolf has seemingly gone into safe mode musically. You won't hear "Redneck Yacht Club" on The Wolf, either, even though KSCS and The Twister are both playing it.

As far as imaging, what would you suggest for imaging a station in competition with the Wolf and in DFW? Obviously, the guy from Northern Exposure only goes so far.

Twister will never be more than a flanker station. KSCS is the "mainstream" country..Wolf the "homegown renegade" country...at least that's how they image themselves. Twister is right in the middle...which isn't a BAD strategy to drive a truck right between the 2..but limit yourself with that signal and not realllly wanting to pick tooo much form big bro (KSCS), and you are doomed. Now speakin of the Wolf...Anyone hear the BillyBob's spot that is promoting a "Joe ELI" show...and not Joe "ELEE" show...I know Joe Ely's not straight country..but he IS a TEXAS legend...and a station that tries to drape itself in all things Texas should know how to pronounce his name. That kinda stuff shouldn't happen in market 5. Be it produced in-house or an agency spot...someone should catch that before it hits the air.

Drop the negativity. Every station I've ever seen that's done negative imaging has gotten their ass kicked. Listeners don't wanna hear it.

The Twister's sweepers are almost long enough to be songs. They spend a good 15-20 seconds in a sweeper explaining that they don't talk as much as The Wolf. Kinda defeats the purpose.

Twister also makes a point that they don't have traffic reports. How good are their drive time numbers? When I'm sittin in a backup on 635 I'm not thinking "Thank God they don't have traffic reports on The Twister. It drives me NUTS when they talk about where the accidents are. I hate getting home earlier because I know in advance what's up on the roads." If this were Waco or Wichita Falls I could see skipping traffic reports, but this is a metro area with a population of 4.6 million people. Traffic is pretty much a necessity.
