96.7 W244BY has become Air1 Christian Rock

I have heard Air 1 on 93.7, when I've gone over to Jonesboro. Well, it's good to have an Air 1 affiliate closer to home. Though, I know there's no chance that we're going to hear any local personalities on that frequency. Oh, well, I'd rather have a national feed than no feed at all in this market.

I thought all along that EMF should put Air 1 on one of its translators in Memphis. I'm glad it's finally happened.

Now if they'd just do the same thing with at least one of their translators in Jackson.

My guess is it's relaying a subchannel of a Clear Channel station. EMF and Clear Channel appear to have partnered up with subchannels and translators as EMF is letting CC use some of its translators in exchange for using HD subchannels.

So who owns the translator now, EMF or CC? If EMF still owns it then they'll probably be more likely to keep Air 1 on it. If CC owns it then who knows when they'll decide to pull the plug. They've proven in the past that they can't be trusted to do a CCM format and stay with it.

CC owns it. It is being fed off of the KJMS HD sub. EMF & CC have formed partnerships like this in other markets. CC is also using some of EMF's translators to feed their HD subs in places where K-Love and Air1 are already on the air.

EMF owns 96.7. CC owns KJMS 101.1. Most people do not have HD radios to check but Micheal said its off an KJMS HD sub. Probably HD3 then. EMF does not care about HD channels I know so getting on a CC HD sub is not a concern of EMF unless EMF has a translator to relay on. EMF does not even list HD channels on their station lists.

EMF has not sold most of the translators they own to CC that CC is using around the country. By relaying an HD sub-channel the EMF translators are able to upgrade power and have a much better coverage area. IF EMF has multiple translators in an area then I guess EMF can let CC use most of them but save 1 or 2 for EMF on an HD sub-channel I guess. I do not think CC is using any of the other EMF translators around Memphis though.

EMF has not always owned 96.7.

in 7/2008 they EMF sold 96.7 and WPLX to POLLACK for $250k.

I sure can't find anything on the FCC site even showing that sale. At some point later it transferred to Clear Channel.

EMF and Clear Channel have transferred several translators back and forth in other markets over the past few months. In some markets CC is feeding translators for K-Love/Air1 via clear channel HD subs. In other markets EMF is allowing CC to program some of their translators via HD subs.

Here is one mention of it from this very site:

Micheal EMF was going to sale the 96.7 translator to Pollack along with 1180 KXIQ. However 96.7 was not consummated. So 96.7 never left EMF's possession and CC never owned it.

That is why I can't find the transfers then. Pollack should have bought it for put 1180 on. Sure would have made a good pairing and giving some FM coverage.

Air 1 is been off for the past 48 hours.

I don’t know who owns what, but I can tell you as of last night there ain’t no Air 1 on 96.7. It’s “crying in your beer country”…and I’m less than 5 air miles from the Brunswick tower where they are supposedly located.

These relationships make sense for both EMF and CC... EMF has plenty of translators -- CC wants translators for some of their AM signals .. so they can relay CC's HD channels or AM stations that are on HD channels. EMF sometimes needs a way to feed a translator over air for Air1 or KLove .. they get a CC HD channel for their programming to feed their translators.. Win win for both parties.

96.7 is back as of lunch. I wonder if this is how it is going to be going forward. KJMS's HD is the least reliable in town. I spoke to Alonzo the engineer at CC a long time ago about KJMS's HD exciter and was told a software update from Ibiquity introduced the issue. I guess it's never been worked out since then.

I have an HD radio in my Jeep. I listed to Air 1 on KJMS HD-2 the other day after finding out about it here. I was not at all impressed with the audio. It sounded like an AM station.

Here's the fun part. Since this translator is fill-in (within the 60 dbu contour of the full-power station), there's no requirement to actually use the off-air signal as the audio for the translator. If they are in the same building, the audio could be split after the satellite receiver and fed directly into a 250 watt transmitter. The HD is just to keep it legal.
