96.7 WPTR

Wow, Christian Talk. I thought I had heard every format in the world. Who listen to this type of radio? I did for 1 minute on Monday because I was curious. Could this station make history with it's first ever 0.0 rating next time Arbitron ranks them? Is it possible to get a 0.0? Maybe 0.1?

Someone please buy WPTR. What a waste of a frequency it is now.

"Christian Talk" is a misnomer. It's just a term Crawford came up with to make the station sound like it's something different and more interesting. "Talk" radio inferrs programs with interaction between host and listener. WDCD has a few programs that fit this criteria but 90% of what they air is paid national preaching shows. It's the same as what WHAZ and WJIV has been doing for years.

I remember Pulse 967 had a loyal following among CCM listeners (AFAIK they were a more "liberal" CCM station, somewhere in between Air 1 and K-Love), but when K-Love and Air 1 came to the area (when Galaxy left Albany), Pulse's listener base slowly dwindled, which was the main reason for the flip to Legends...

However, Legends ended up failing against WTRY, so now we're stuck with WDCD-FM redux...

As I remember it Crawford had some issues beyond their control involving some loans for which the terms changed. They were financially forced to cut Legends 96.7 and go for the cheaper simulcast setup. Legends 96.7 did not fail against WTRY. If the money had been there they could have made serious inroads against TRY which as a Clear Channel clone fired an area broadcast legend and continues to have a redundant playlist.
Like others have said, PLEASE, Crawford, sell 96.7! 1540 is enough. In fact, if Crawford can't afford to do business in this area they should leave altogether.
WTRY is ripe for the picking.

Chuck- they didn't fail against WTRY? No audience (other than the peeps on this board!) and no advertisers. Is there really a market for another oldies station with a crappy signal in this market? Don't you think that if you could gain audience with anything but a focused playlist everyone would be doing it? Time to flip the calendar to 2011 dude.

As far as 96.7 having a crappy signal it seemed to come in fine wherever I drove in the region. WTRY is no great shakes as far as their signal goes either. When WTRY went to FM they took over the signal from one of the best oldies stations this region has ever heard-SHO FM. The general rule in radio is to focus your playlist but how focused are we talking here? Why can't the Capital Region have an oldies station like WGNY?

Wow! I haven't seen a mention of SHO-FM here is quite some time. Thanks for saying what you did about the station when it was oldies. Many of those involved with that station are still in the area in broadcasting. We had a great group of dedicated individuals there. It's just too bad the company spend without discipline. I believe we will see a great oldies station in the Albany area again and it's just a matter of time.

Hey DUUDE what is your definition of a "crappy signal"? It's gets really old when people complain about this stuff. OK, so 96.7 serves the "capital district". Are your writing from Hudson?? or Pittsfield?? or Glens Falls? or Amsterdam? .... I could go on.. but I think you get the point. If your're IN this area, like Chuck said, driving around, there are NO problems with the signal, unless your car uses a coat hanger for an antenna. Slight picket-fencing and an occational loss of stereo doesn't constitute a crappy signal. It's not going to be Sirius/XM quality......ever....... so give it up.

SHO-FM was without doubt the best Oldies station that I have ever heard anywhere! Too bad...that they faced immediate competition from Oldies-99.5-WGY-FM...which flipped to Oldies a week after they did...99.5 is a massive full Class B signal. SHO-FM also simulcast on current Q103 frequency 103.5...which in those days was directional...away from Albany. Unfortunately...when SHO-FM signed on in 1989...they replaced Oldies station WNYJ-98.3 which was climbing in the ratings with some variation of Hot A/C. It tanked...and 15 months later they flipped SHO-FM back to Oldies..at this time bankrupt as I recall....and than with in days...WGY-FM appeared. With regards to the 96.7 signal...It is a solid Class A signal...and substantially superior to 98.3!!!

96.7 is a pretty clear frequency, yes... what a waste... I say go ahead and sell it at this point...

However, 98.3 actually has a 60dBu signal in the core cities (A-S-T)... even though 98.3 is directional due to WSUL which is around 80 miles from Albany :)

In regard to WTRY 98.3, the FCC website makes no mention of a directional transmit antenna. The 60dBu contour map appears somewhat directional, but I think that is related to the surrounding terrain.

Wrongo. WTRY-FM is licensed non directional. It's terrain shielded but non D. WTRY and WSUL are both "clear" of each other, there is no short spacing between the two. WSUL is directional against WDAQ in Danbury and WKRZ in Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.
