96.9 and other stations

Would love to see the demise of Limbaugh. Be nice to have Gene Burns replayed in Boston, he can discuss many subjects, is an expert on the Middle East. Does not play and replay the same pablum, Democrats and Liberals. Also, he does not receive scripted info faxed from the White House as to how to counter the mishaps of the white house.

Need informative open minded talk, Savage scares me, he is up and down.

I like when I do hear him George Noory's program, it is a great escape.

Re: 96.9 and other stations

Limbaugh, like Howie Carr, is a record that keeps skipping. Ruffling papers, talking to people who aren't in the studio (Mr. Snerdly?), defending Bush,
Yapping about how Bush didn't stage an event and, as one poster seems to have indicated on this or another board, Limbaugh staging calls himself. The entire
Limbaugh show seems like it is scripted by interns ten minutes before they sober him up and put him behind the mic. He's a disgraced drug addict with no morality and should be put out to pasture.

Howie should bring back his Big Scary Trucks routine;it's the best cliche in his arsenal and the one he uses the least. Howie should also be doing his show with his sow out in the pasture. He, she and their ill-gotten fancy car. Boring.

Yes, and his ratings really stink...not. Still #1 nationwide. Hannity #2,
Savage (not my cup of tea, actually) tied for #3. When Franken gets into the top
5 talk hosts by listenership, we shall have achieved the true
socialist utopia, Comrade :)

Listeners, by millions (source: TALKERS)

1.Rush Limbaugh 14.75+
2.Sean Hannity 13.00+
3.Michael Savage (t) 8.25
Howard Stern (t) 8.25

also Laura Ingraham #5, 5.00

Re: 96.9 and other stations

Thanks for setting the record straight, coon.

I'm so sick of hearing about Gene Burns. I wish somebody would put him on in Boston so you could see how little impact he'd have in the ratings. This guy is a dinosaur. Smart, articulate, but practicing a style of radio that will no longer fly here.

Gene Burns was great to listen to before--as you say, smart
and articulate, but as you say, his style won't necessarily
cut it these days. Entertainment value needed. (And yes,
in the old days, civil discussion was entertainment value
enough...)<P ID="signature">______________

Is Bruce Williams on any of the suburban stations or out in Framingham or something? His performance should speak for anything Burns could do.

Re: 96.9 and other stations

I'm not sure why you believe Burns wouldn't do well here. There is still a market for intelligent talk radio as far as I'm concerned. Brudnoy still had a loyal following till the end and I suspect that Burns would do just as well in this market.

The great thing about both Burns and Brudnoy is that they were both well read and worked constantly to keep the shows interesting. All of the current crop of crappy talk radio hosts just do the same thing over and over again.

Carr does the death pool, what's the worst thing you ever did to the food while working in a restaurant? Max Robbins. Predictable and boring.

Limbaugh, although a great talent, has become a shill for the administration, very predictable from day to day.

Serverin, always national politics and pretending to be some sort of insider. Nothing new here. Blowhard of marginal talent.

O'Reilly. Rehash of last nights TV show and insufferable ego.

All of these guys and most of the current crop of talk radio hosts have one thing in common. They can play only one note. Tune in today or tune in a month from now and it will be the same damn show. Nothing new, nothing exciting and nothing to learn. It get pretty boring very quickly for anyone with an IQ of over 100. We deserve better then this and the market will support something better then this.

Huh??? Williams' act is s-o-o-o-o tired, he should hang up his earphones. He does a completely different kind of talk than what Burns did--when Burns was on the air in Boston. Williams is on WBNW 1120 Concord 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM M-F--for those who live in S. Acton and can actually pick up the signal at night.

Sometimes I wonder whether WBNW's pattern changes have gotten out of synch with the sun. It not only often sounds as if WBNW is on day pattern/power at night (the station has a history of doing that) but it also sounds as if they run the much lower night power (and pattern) during the day. WBNW is one of those stations that technically is not operating legally if it runs its night pattern during the day even though its authorized night power is lower than its authorized day power. Despite the higher power, the day pattern protects first-adjacent WCEC, which is only 20-something miles away. Since WCEC is a daytimer, it requires no protection at night and WBNW's authorized night pattern provides none--although it does protect KMOX, which the day pattern does not do. So to be legal, WBNW needs to run the correct pattern day and night.

Re: 96.9 and other stations

there can be slots where strange acts like Brudnoy's can work - evenings, WBZ, Boston, getting his start when he did, it all happened to work. The styles have changed, however, and Burns is way out of style.

You can argue that the clothes from 10 years ago are just as good as the ones today, and you're right. But nobody wants to buy them.

Re: 96.9 and other stations

Absolute nonsense! The current low class drivel is being fed to us by program directors and consultants that feel that the only way to succeed is by catering to the lowest common denominator. They are a bunch of gutless sheep who feel the need to follow trends instead of leading the pack.

Look at KGO in San Francisco. Local programming for the most part, educated and well read hosts and civilized talk radio. They have been on the top of the heap for years now. SF is very much like Boston and a similar format would clean up here as well.

Re: 96.9 and other stations

KGO is more news station than talk station, just like wbz. KGO does a news wheel during morning and afternoon drive, and at midday. They manage to get away with Burns at night, just as WBZ got away with Brudnoy at night. They also own a big TV station in the market, and one of the anchors does the afternoon show. Nothing revolutionary there in terms of talk radio.
