96.9 Greenville

What exactly is this station? RDS shows "Poder 96.9", they're playing some kind of Hispanic format. It's a translator for WGTK/94.5...which is odd because I'm not sure if Salem is operating it and it'd be odd for them to be leasing it out as I don't believe that is typically their practice. The signal booms for a translator.

I'm just not sure if the area can support 3 Hispanic stations though...94.9/1070, 96.9, and 103.9...

Yes, it could be Rental Radio! It's just Business: As long as the Pay-soes keep coming in, white cheese gets shredded, and covers all you hear.

Well the booming signal has blocked out 96.9 - WKKT Kat Country from Charlotte, in Greenville County. I used to receive it with an attic antenna, but not really in the car. Although the 96.9-HD signal from Charlotte will frequently lock in and overtake Poder 96.9 on my HD Radio in the house.

FM stations are only protected to their 60 dBu contour which is the most inner circle on the Radio Locator maps. Sometimes due to terrain the received signal may be better than the contour shows. Plus most FMs enjoy reception beyond the 60 dBu but that coverage isn't protected from interference by the FCC. In cases where the FM receives interference from a low power FM or translator it can need file a complaint with the FCC. Most don't because they have few listeners and no revenue generated beyond the 60 dBu. The days of long range FM reception are quickly fading.

Wow this must be a powerful enough station to cause even minor interference to WKKT here a few miles east of Cowpens, into Cherokee County, west of Gaffney. That's 40 miles away from Paris Mountain. Lots of people listen to WKKT station around here. 97.1 in Spartanburg has also caused problems for me, not just to 96.9 from Charlotte, but also for 97.3 WKBC which I can luckily still pull in most of the time.

Many full power FM signals have strong coverage past the 60dBu contour, and I think the FCC should protect these signals more into their fringe contours. These low power signals cause interference and only serve a limited area. Same situation with WLNK on 107.9FM in Greenville County, where low power WXRU on 107.9 is now interfering. WLNK has a fringe contour well into Greenville County and had a decent signal. Fortunately I get it fine in the house, but car reception is now problematic. Hopefully WXRU can move to another frequency, because their own signal is limited by WLNK interference as well. As for 96.9, the Poder station now interferes with WKKT in Spartanburg County, but WKKT always previously dropped out before Greenville County.
