96.9 WBEC Cancels Rush Limbaugh Over FlukeGate

Yes I had heard about WBEC dropping Rush and it took a little effort to find they had a webpage...
actually it was a case of a page on their _FM_'s site; oh yes, we do have an AM station too
and here's what they run.

WGY-AM 810 covers WBEC-AM's listening area like a glove, so anyone who wants to listen to Limpbaugh will still be able to do so.

A station that dumps Rush " over Flukegate?" That's a bit too high-minded for this biz.

Or, is smart enough to know there is a potential mega-lawsuit in its future.

Maybe a small market AM that can't afford the show, is using this as a scapegoat to no longer carry the program they can't afford to run.

Doesn't matter anyways, as said earlier in this thread, WGY carries the show and has a nice signal, county wide, so those listeners from WBEC will just shift to WGY.

We won't have to worry about WGY's coverage of the show pretty soon now, will we?

They're going to need a forklift to get that 500 lb fat piece of crap out of his "EIB" studio.

Rush may have gone to far, but he gave his audience what they wanted, which is provocative talk.

Fluke came to Georgetown University interested in contraceptive coverage: She researched the Jesuit college’s health plans for students before enrolling, and found that birth control was not included. “I decided I was absolutely not willing to compromise the quality of my education in exchange for my health care,” says Fluke, who has spent the past three years lobbying the administration to change its policy on the issue. The issue got the university president’s office last spring, where Georgetown declined to change its policy.

From the Washington Post article. So really, was Rush that out of hand poking fun at her? She isn't this innocent 19 year old like everyone thought she was. She is a political activist, and went into a situation, knowing what the rule was, and tried to change an entire institution's right to refuse coverage for religious reasons. That's all there is to this.

So if she didn't want to compromise her education for her health care, then suck it up and deal with the rules. Or go to Harvard or a different school that does cater to your needs.

The media is killing Rush, as usual, for comments he made on an ENTERTAINMENT show. This wasn't Tom Brokaw saying it. But Rush caved, and did the stupid thing, which is apologize. The USA, United States of Apologies. For once, I would like to see someone make a comment and then have the nuts to stick by it.

Much of the rest of the media has been trying to get rid of Rush Limbaugh for many years, but every time it is tried, it does not work. I doubt this will be the end of Limbaugh. His ratings will probably soar.

As for the apology, was it really sincere, or was it using absurdity to expose absurdity? If sincere, it will never be enough to many in the competing media.

Just like so many others, you completely miss the point.

The media is killing Rush for slandering a woman using vile epithets which she did not deserve. It doesn't matter whether it's an entertainment show, a news show, a reality show, a porn show...whatever. Publicly labeling a woman a "slut" and a "prostitute," in the absence of any evidence that she is either or both of those, is not only way beyond the content expected in an "entertainment" show, but it's also actionable in a court of law.

And in all the furor over Rush's comments, the gist of what Sandra Fluke was saying was completely overlooked: Contraception drugs are not *only* about contraception. They are proven to reduce the occurrence of cervical and ovarian cancer and have a bunch of other health benefits to women. Only a person who still thinks women are second-class citizens would hear only the word "contraception" and go off the deep end.

And you are missing the bigger reality: It is not an “ENTERTAINMENT show”——it is an “entertainment SHOW”, the purpose of which is to get the highest ratings, so businesses will want to advertise on that show and the show’s owner can charge the highest rate and make the most money.
So even if the show is #1 with a 10,000,000,000 rating and can charge an ad rate of $1,000,000 a minute, if the content is such that the businesses cancel their ads because of customer complaints about the content, then those businesses may take their ads to a show about watching paint dry——that is only #273 with a 37 rating, but only charges $100 a minute for an ad and can, therefore, buy 10,000 ads with the same budget!
So which SHOW would a radio station consider more successful $$MONEY$$wi$e? ;)
And if you doubt that reasoning, remember: Rush admitted getting a kick out of the controversy and scorn the “big, bad, left wing” media was raining down on him UNTIL the ad dollar$ started getting up and walking away, THEN he started to have second thoughts and remorse. ::)

Oops...using the word "furor" could put you in violation of Godwin's Law.

Isn't it time to quit using "gate" as the suffix for every scandal and white collar crime?

Most of America most likely wasn't born when "Watergate" was first used and has no idea what it means. And in this instance it is misused since Ms. Fluke is the victim here and not the perpetrator. If anything, this should be called "Rushgate" or "BigMouthgate" or "BadMannersgate" or summat.

The stations that drop Rush are losers who don't know how to run a really good radio station and have taken this opportunity to have about 10 seconds of Lib recognition, but mostly they are cutting a cash outlay expense paying Rush. My bet is, they will sign on to the new Huckabee show which will, more than likely, be on a barter basis. If they can't sell Huckabee it won't cost them as much as their ineptness in selling Rush. However, losers are losers regardless of how cheap the programming may be.

That's about as devoid of reality as anything I've seen on these boards.

1420WBEC Cancels Rush Limbaugh Over FlukeGate

How do talk show hosts manage the trick of being omniscient, infallible pundits (according to themselves and their diehard fans) up until the point at which they get their tongues caught in the ol' meatgrinder of bad PR, and then all of a sudden they're just entertainers who were only kidding?
???

You said it yourself. They are omniscient, infallibe pundits in their own minds. The fact that their various "dittoheads" can't reason their way out of a paper bag without a daily dose from their pet pundit is either laughable or pathetic...or maybe both.

BTW, I don't recall hearing Rush say he was kidding...but then, ego without substance was never my favorite thing.

Kinda like reviews: if you put stock in the good ones,
you then have to put stock in the bad ones, as well.
The sword cuts both ways...
