96.9 WPDQ and 96.9 WAIV

Hey Guys:

I have seen some of these statements on the boards and I would like your guys help in clearing this up for me. Around what years did these formats happen:

1. 96.9 WPDQ around 1969 became automated AC using the Hit Parade format?

2. Did WPDQ 96.9 ever have the automated oldies format "Solid Gold Rockn Roll"

3. Was 96.9 ever called Stereo Rock 97? Was this automated Top 40 or an Live AOR format?

4. When WPDQ went to WAIV in 1975 was the format AOR or AC? I am really lost on this one.

Thanks for your help on this one guys!!

T.J.

I don't remember 96.9 ever being WPDQ although it does sound somewhat familiar that those calls were once associated with the 96.9 frequency. It was WMBR-FM 96.9 at one time and was co-owned with WMBR-AM 1460 and WMBR-TV 4 although I don't know the years... When 96.9 became WAIV, it was, indeed, AOR and was known as "WAVE 97"... In 1978 WAIV went head-to-head against Top 40 WIVY "Y 103" and WAPE-AM 690 "The BIG Ape" when it flipped to Top 40 known as "V 97" with a final format flip under the WAIV call letters in 1981 when the station went to a mainstream oldies based adult conetemporary format known as "97 WAVE FM", home of the "Million Dollar Weekeends". There were variations in the AC format on WAIV until it became oldies formatted WJQL sometime in the late 80s known as "Cool 96.9".

Mark, WMBR-FM was 96.1 and became WKTZ-FM, the original WMBR-FM transmitter was on the WMBR-TV (WJXT) channel 4 tower. Some of the original WMBR-FM transmission equipment including the mono exciter was moved into the back room of the WKTZ-FM transmitter site on Hogan Rd. (WJKS-TV 17).
It was 96.9 that was originally WPDQ-FM

WPDQ-FM was "Stereo Rock 97" in the early 70's. I have their TV spot.

"WPDQ-FM decalers WAR on bubblegum radio!" Then paraphrasing: "We won't insult you with loud DJ's, or silly contests..."

Re: 96.9 WPDQ and 96.9 WAIV TO Tommy R

Hey Guys:

Thanks for all of your responces. BIG HELP!!! Tommy R would you know if Strero Rock 97 was automated Top 40 using TM century automated Top 40 format or an Live AOR format?

I have noticed that 96.9 WAS called WRLJ, would anybody know what format it was. I know from the broadcast yearbooks that the call letters were from about 1968 to about 1971.

THANKS GUYS!!

T.J.

WRLJ was easy listening. Very easy Listening

Automated with a Schafer 800T system. The "T" meant it was the "transistorized" version. Earlier models had vacuum tubes.

Drake-Chenault 14" reel to reel library.

Ah yes... I well remember those Schafer automation systems. We had one at WMFQ-FM 92.7 Ocala from 1977 till 1995 when the station was sold. I believe it may have been a "T" series as well as I don't recall it ever using any vacuum tubes. I worked there in 1979 on the overnight shift. Our engineer had named the system "Gertrude" which was a beast of a machine... Of course, it was top of the line in its day... We started with Bonneville beautiful music series, later switching to Drake-Chenault... If I'm not mistaken, I think many FM stations from the '60s and '70s were using the Schafer systems along with programming provided by Drake-Chenault... We had a similar set-up at WQXQ Q 102 Daytona Beach in the early '80s before finally going live...

As I remember, when WAIV went AOR in circa 1975, it was a real kick @$$ album rock station... I lived in Ocala at the time and could only hear WAIV when the weather conditions were favorable for listening to distant FM signals... Most of the time the signal came in well at night when it was cold weather or if it had been raining... WAIV Wave 97 ROCKED!!! I hated to see the format go when WAIV became Top 40 formatted V 97 sometime in 1978... I never really liked it as a Top 40 station, always missing Wave 97.... WJAX-FM 95.1 was a decent Album Rock station, too, back in the '70s, before transistioning to urban 95X...
