96 K-Rock, 99X restructure format

From the News-Press:

Media Matters: Rock radio stations restructure format

96 K-Rock has the new slogan “Talk that Rocks” and the station will drop its rock music format to focus on a lineup of talk radio programs all day long.

Meanwhile, 99X is no longer known under the “New Rock” moniker. Rather it’s now dubbed “Southwest Florida’s Rock Station.”

Talk that Rocks? What will they air in the evenings? Overnights?

Let's see how long this change lasts.

Well, according to RBR, right after market mainstays Stan and Haney, they will be airing Lex and Terry on a twelve-hour tape delay. That's followed by Nick and Artie, then John and Jeff, both of which are live. My guess is that they'll play some sort of rock music on the weekends, so as to give purpose to them remaining under the name "K-Rock". Then it'll be just like the now-defunct "Real Radio 100.1" (which had the same morning show) - and we all know how long that lasted...

Oh, and the article also says Zito and Garrett are sliding over from 99X to do a talk show in iddays, after Bubba.

The folks at Beasley must have thought that their two "rock" stations (96 and 99X) where cancelling each other out. 96K Rock has been on air with a rock format since the late 80's. It is sort of a local institution in SW Florida with it's format and big signal. In recent years there has also been a ratings battle between 96K Rock and Arrow 94.5 and it's classic rock format. In fact in recent months 94.5 has dropped it's morning show (Bob and Tom) and has promoted the fact that they are playing more music than 96K Rock.

96K Rock has always had it's share of talkers on over the years including Stern. They have also had some local talkers like the Stan and Haney show. It has been a sort of "man cave" over the years and I think that is just exactly where they are taking now..full time.

Bottom line is I think that having 3 rock formatted (even if they were not the exact same format) stations in one area may not cut it in today's market. Everything that I have read lately indicates that rock formats are having trouble in the ratings game. Time will tell here.

Look at it this way, even if it is a talk station at least it's not another right wing talker.

Zito and Garrett (and Gentry Thomas, who seems to show up everywhere) sounded good yesterday. Wish someone would sit Stan and Haney (especially Haney!) down and tell them content, not endless filler, makes a good show. Too "rambly" amd "damn, don't I sound good" for me.

Anyway, since K-Rock was getting their classic rock butt kicked by WARO, this could be a good move.

Amen to that !
Then it won't last.

Calling it a "talk" station, is equating it to a "music" station.

Gregorian Chants is music, too.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!
