96 Rock back in the day...

This week I visited with Kaedy Kiely, and she gave me 2 huge scrapbooks filled with lots of 96 Rock memorabilia. I understand Beth Kepple pulled them all together and it's a great historical perspective of the radio station that finally toppled the ratings leader at the time, 94Q. So I thought I'd share a little slice of Atlanta radio history with an online photo album. You'll recognize a lot of the names, some you won't, and check the hair styles! These photos come from 1985-86. Enjoy.

Thanks! We didn't suck too bad on the radio either! (or so I've been told)

Cool, Thanks for sharing. Those were the good ol' days. I remember going to Florida on Sring Break and vacations and seeing all the cars with the 96rock tag, and the 96rock beach towels hanging from the balconies, it was like being back home in Atlanta. Kaedy hasn't really changed that much (ok the hair as a little big) but she is still a doll.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by RNRkid on 12/24/05 03:42 AM.</FONT></P>

That goes without saying.

I remember reading on an old Georgia Tech website five years ago that 96 Rock's call letters WKLS stand for the initials of the original owners of the station. Is that true?

I believe this is true. The K is for (Don) Kennedy, I believe.

Wow, this is possibly the best post in the Atlanta board in months! Thanks, Steve!

Blast from the past!!! It's a shame you didn't get one or two of The Bushman in the mix.
Actually, I got one of the Richard Jewell Tees kicking around here someplace, a puppy chewed a hole in it.. tho they were what - ten years later.

WKLS - the K was for Kennedy, L was for James Lathom and the S for Gordon Swan, the Chief Engineer. (What was Lathom's role, Don?) It was the first independent commercial FM in Atlanta, on the air on December 2, 1960 at 6,350 watts, going to 100kw on November 11, 1965. It was also the first stereo FM in Atlanta. It played easy listening music. There were only 3 staff running tapes on a home grown automation system for 17 hours a day in the beginning. They also had a magnetic drum device to play the time and temp automatically, but I don't know how the machine knew what the temperature was outside. Don certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame for many reasons, WKLS, Ga Radio News Network, TV36 in the 80's, and of course, Officer Don! A true hero!

Hey Steve,

You still have that video posted that you did at the 96Rock Goodbye party? That was awesome, too. These are some great memories, guys. Something to remind us of why we're in this business in the first place. It's not all wine and roses, but there's some great beer and great times!

96 Rock was at the top of it's game back in the mid-80s. I used to commute to Atlanta daily from the NW burbs at that time. I had an old car with a radio that preferred to work on the AM band only. 96 was on the AM too at 970. This station was so good, it took two channels to carry it all! Does anyone have stories from the days when WIIN became 96 Rock AM?

Steve,
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was a middle school and high school kid in Carrollton and Douglasville during those days, and the team of you, Marc and Kelly Kincaid was one thing that I never missed each morning even if it meant being late for classes. I got in trouble for it frequently, but in the long run it paid off for me. You see... I was really studying for my career in radio. I usually spent my lunch period (and a couple of classes each day) snoozing so that I could catch Kaedy after school, Willard at 9PM for the "perfect album side" and Mackenzie Scott after midnight.

That was real radio as I remember it.

When a friend recently told me what his baseball card collection would have been worth if his mother hadn't thrown it out, my thoughts went to my 96 Rockard, t-shirts (which wouldn't fit me today anyway) and the tag that hung on the front of my first car. I wish I had that stuff today. Not for the monetary value, but as a souvenir of a really cool place that no longer exists.

Thanks again!

BTW, does anyone know where Kelly Kincaid is these days?

Those are some wonderful pictures!

I had a wonderful time when Alan Sneed was consulting our station in the mid 1990s.

Always a true professional and gave it to ya straight. He even cleaned out some of his closets and gave me some of his 96 Rock gold records and other items when I needed to decorate my first house in Athens.

This thread and those pics are wonderful, thank you!!

The classic 96 Rock pictures are probably the best thing that have been posted on the Atlanta radio board.

Thanks Steve! Those were the days.

:)
