96 ROCK is now Radio 96.1

They're playing the same stuff they've played over the last 10 years, but at different times they have focused more on different genres of 'rock.'
At least it seems to me.
Sucks if it's only a jukebox though.

We asked listeners like you, throughout the Triangle, what they wanted to hear on their favorite radio station. The result was a much wider variety of rock music than we ever imagined playing on one radio station.

This sounds a lot like when they were more alternative-ish and went with the "rock that knows no boundaries" nonsense.

As good 96rock has been at whatever format they have attempted in their many years, they have suffered an identity crisis. First AOR, then active, then alternative, then active, then AOR again, then classic rock, now classic rock with a new name (check the playlist...just more B sides than before)

To be honest, I'm really not surprised there are no rumblings of a more modern-ish rock station landing somewhere like 100.7. 96rock got decent ratings as a modern rocker and now that they have classic rock in the bag, CC could run pretty much 24/7 Premium Choice alt rock programming on the cheap there. Since they botched classic rock (twice), oldies and AC, I personally would imagine this would be a more logical path...

Radio-X

I just listened on the way into work. I'm not sure what to think of this new format. They could have easily kept the 96Rock name and pulled off this mix of music. In fact, throughout the long stream of previously-mentioned formats that have been on there, they probably have already.

With some of what I heard I'm guessing they are trying to pick up whoever left The River when it went Christmas (and of course, keep them there).

Oldies on 100.7 wasn't "botched". When it flipped Nov 2004 the station was #2 P35-64, #1 P45-54 (and beat sister WRDU for M25-54). It was a revenue issue (four sales ppl includng the LSM. that's it) as well as the fact that then SVPP Marc Chase didn't "get" oldies. He flipped eight stations in the SE in 2002-04 (yet somehow WBIG, a terrible station, was kept). Now with PPM oldies/classic hits enjoying much success. Success that most programmers of the format knew it still had in it, especially with boomers, but couldn't get anyone to acknowledge up the "brain chain". Even CC is now using "oldies" in positioning, something the company was against in the early 00's. Oldies in positioning for KLOU/St Louis and KJR/Seattle. Many companies putting the format on the air in favor of rock or AC. Chicago has two "battling", WJMK and WLS-FM.

The new playlist resembles a "Jack"-style station. Actually looks quite similar to WDRQ -- 93.1 Doug FM -- in Detroit.

You guys are in desperate need of a REAL rock station.

Any chance WVBZ in Greensboro can move back to its former tower site? :-\

The background music in my office building is sixties. It's actually quite good and the library is deep. The competition for oldies formats has to be tremendous, particularly if the stations are just voice-tracked computers.

Judging by the posts up on the 96 rock facebook page this move has not gone over so well.
Seems like a lot of unhappy listeners.
I never expected Curtis to pull a Clear Channel move out of the hat.

Looks like all jocks are gone, besides Alli Morgan and Foster, who remain in an off-air capacity. Honestly, I never expected CMG to pull a stunt like this, if anything, I expected an FM simulcast of WPTF.

I can't believe Curtis did this. While I don't like rock, it's a format whose popularity depends a lot on good DJs, and I think this is just plain wrong.

don't worry when this "new format" tanks then he can put WPTF on 96.1
Wonder if that is the longterm goal?

That's what I'm thinking. If this happens, I wonder what Rush Radio would have to do to compete? It'd be nice for NASCAR fans to be able to listen in on FM as well.

Why would putting Brian Freeman on more than one frequency be a longterm goal of ANYONE?

Bwahahaha! You mean "Big Market" Brian Freeman, don't you? He loves to tell about his big market experience. For the dyslexics on the board that's Big Brain Freeman!

did not say it was a good longterm goal, was just wondering if it is the longterm goal at curtis media.
WPTF needs some help if it stays on AM or moves to FM. They should really consider picking up some new national shows or hiring different local hosts.
I know there is no one as big as Rush and the rest of that crowd but there are some pretty good talkers not currently being heard in Raleigh.

Say what you want about Brian Freeman but I almost miss him on WSJS. At least the guy sounded good and had energy. Glenn Scott's last few years he was reading about lost dogs out of the Winston-Salem Journal. He made Andy Rooney look like Justin Beiber. I never met him and he did seem a like a little bit of a "Hot shot" but his pace was good and I thought he was talented.

I'd still like to see WSJS and WZTK merge to make one news station with a AM 600 Simulcast. You cover tremendous area. They have local news. You could keep JR snider on the morning show switch him to mid-days and have the ZTK morning team do mornings. Rush Radio is a complete and utter failure. You would blow them out of the water and would OWN the talk radio market. Not to mention probably chip away at Rush 1061 in Raleigh.

Sure as hell beats freakin Dave Ramsey and Neil Boortz

Great idea. I'll never forget during Hurricane Irene, I checked WRDU, expecting at the bare minimum, a TV simulcast with NBC17. What I got, was a Rush Limbaugh re-run. Decided to go to WPTF.. Joe Wade Formicola doing live coverage and WZTK was simulcasting as well. If we were ever to have another major hurricane, snowstorm, tornado outbreak, etc, if Curtis had that 600/101.1 simulcast, plus WPTF chipping in if Raleigh was affected, Rush would be screwed.

And then who would do rock? Someone has to.

It's bad enough what happened in Miami and New York City.

Not that I like the so-called music, but this is a format you just have to have.

I've heard in various places that WRVA-FM will be active rock or modern rock after the holidays.
