Just received the following email via the 96 Rock mailing list:

"Tomorrow, Friday morning, you're invited to witness the end of 96 Rock.

And be part of new beginning for 96.1 FM

Tune in Friday (tomorrow) at 9am."

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I just recieved a call from Rodney Ho -
He has told me that rumor has it that Whip is gone.
Which if it is true I think it's bullcrap.
The Buzz Explodes at 9am going to 96.1

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Hmm, I wonder if they'll be interested in hiring DJs ready to move into the commerical world! *rubs hands together maniacally* ;D

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

While part of me hates the possibility of '96Rock' going away, it totally makes sense to shift Buzz-esque programming to 96.1. With 99X sounding worse by the moment, and Dave not having much room to get worse, a Buzz-esque format could do very well on 96.1.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Looks like the RGs firing was planned after all.

Go get 'em Larry

Where do the Braves go?

96 Rock became the co-flagship for Atlanta Braves baseball this year. WGST-640 is barely adequate during the day and inadequate at night.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

i now pause for a moment of silence.......................now note to clear channel..you ++++++++ idiots!!!!!

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Isn't it interesting that a PD can greenlight a bit that gets rid of the Regular Guys..and then get rewarded like this.... with no real punishment. Didn't think that CC policy worked like that. Goodbye 96 Rock. Sorry it had to come to this.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

It's hard to believe...the end of an era in Atlanta radio. 96 Rock disappearing from the airwaves...sort of an institution vanishing before our ears...

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

monday we saw the death of 99.5 wrno (1967-2006) friday its the end of 96 rock..whats next week? any other heritage stations left in the country?

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I have so many mixed emotions about this. One side of me really hates to see a station that I grew up with, the first rock station in the South with a long heritage, die such a pathetic death. Even Cool 105.7 gave their listeners one weekend to say goodbye. On the other hand, this station died a long time ago. 99X planted the first tumor and years later the River made it terminal. Why 96 Rock never tried to re-claim it's glory years...playing 80's rock mixed in with a little 70's and 90's is beyond me.

All that being said, let's look toward the future. 96 The Buzz will not make for a good lead in to Skip Carey and Pete Van Weiren. Major League Baseball is trying to capture a younger audience (see KDKA and KMOX), but active rock is quite a jump from traditional old fogey radio. So here's the $50,000 question: Does the Buzz tweek itself as a hybrid between RIP 96 Rock and 99X? Or do the Braves move to 94.9 and it becomes a more male oriented format? (i.e. classic hits or hot talk?)

If you would have asked me 6 months ago, I would have sworn that 96.1 would have gone Hot Talk and Planet Radio 640 would have become an Air America affiliate. Hot Talk (Regular Guys Morning Hosts), would have made a good logical home for the Braves, but obviously that's probably not going to happen.

I'm sure we'll all know a lot more tomorrow, but my guess is 96.1 will go Active Rock, 94.9 will go Hot Talk after the holidays and become the new home of the Braves. 105.3 will go "Jack" or Hot AC.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

One of the following statements will be true:

The last song on 96rock will be "Freebird".
O.J. Simpson killed his wife.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I used to listen to 96Rock in the 70s here in Louisiana when the conditions were right, sad to hear this. Gone, just like the above mentioned WRNO, plus KLOL, KZEW, KTXQ in Texas, & WNEW in NYC. Sure there are others.

I did hear KMOD in Tulsa still sounding good a couple of years ago, anyone know if they are they still alive?

At this rate satellite radio may soon be able to claim that good radio (of the style of these stations) has died and gone up to the heavens.....

Im shocked at how poorly they are making this thing happen. Put yourself in the place of the average 96 rock listener, you get this email, or you go to that site, they're referring to it as the end of 96 rock. Now if Im a P1 listener the second the switch happens, my initial and probably lasting reaction is "---- THE BUZZ"!!!!!!!!!!!. Just a mis fire which WILL cause a backlash against the Buzz, no doubt!.

Good luck to em.

CC fired quite a few legendary DJs from their heritage AC station in NYC WLTW. And Monday their bringing in Delilah, so that's another heritage station dying.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

if "tomorrow" was a thursday, i'd say it's all just a new book ruse.... but tomorrow is friday! could it possibly be true?? of course i firmly believe 96rock was murdered back in the fall of 1997, when christopher rude was fired.

i gave them my youth!! and they gave me..... mostly good memories.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

96 Rock is such a strong brand name. I can't see why they would want to mess with that... plus add to that that you know 96 Rock has to bill more than The Buzz does.. seems like a weird Clear Channel gamble. The current sweepers on 96.1 talking about how the station will be "reborn", and that they found their "cajones" again, makes me think that this is just regular stunting and they'll come back with the 96 Rock name, but with more of the Buzz music. How are the diehard Buzz fans really going to feel about this? Skynard fans will revolt.
