96 Rock

By far the lowest CC has ever gone here in Atlanta. Killing the oldest name in FM radio here in Atlanta just like that. I don't think the station has been at its best this year, but it should not be going away! The music mix hasn't been what it has needed to be, they shouldn't have fired The Regular Guys, and they shouldn't have fired Southside & Rhodes.

I really think the murderer of the legendary 96rock is no other than Clear Channel. I don't think 96rock will be gone because of The River. The River has really seemed to hurt 94.9 and 98.5 more than 96.1.

This will leave a huge void in Atlanta radio. The River hardly fills that void. So many great artists and songs will be off Atl radio completely. No AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Def Leppard, George Thorogood, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, The Scorpions, Ted Nugent.
Plus Guns N Roses to a degree (The Buzz has been playing them a little bit)
The River hardly cuts it, they only play minimal amount of songs from artists like Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, The Who, ect...
Not to mention that The River hardly has jocks. I know 96 voice-tracked quite a bit, but that's a hell of a lot better than going jockless.

I think we could maybe see Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Ozzy, and maybe a few more artists along those lines on this new station, but that'll probably be about it. I don't think they will mix in too much Classic Rock. If they did that, it would just be 96rock pre-August 2004 (which I think they should have stuck with)

Is this new station going to be called "Project 96.1"?

Project961.com domain name is assigned to Clear Channel. But, you gotta have a password to get in to the site.
Sounds like a pretty strong possibility it'll be called that...but what do I know?

It says wkls.clearchannel.com at the bottom of the authorization required page.... chances are good that's the name... or it's just a stunt..

either way... horrible name.

RIP 96ROCK! For all the great years you've offered Atlanta radio listeners you will be missed.

No matter what CC brings in to the market you’ll always be true classic rock & roll in my mind.

At least they played one last Rush song in the final hours (“Limelight" around 8:16am 11/17/2006). I remember one overnight DJ in the early 90s playing all of “2112” in the middle of the night one time and another time playing the live version of “Working Man/Finding My Way” off the All The Word’s a Stage album.

another song... then EVEN MORE SPOTS--SIX MINUTES and counting...it's up to EIGHT... Looks like another commercial marathon... Yep--it's now up to TEN... OMG, SEVEN JC Penny spots within 30 minutes... Is that how radio has managed to remain effective to advertisers?

Well... T-minus ten minutes to the "explosion", and... They're kicking off ANOTHER spot break... Will there be room for one more song? If I were a media buyer--I'd DEMAND a refund from CC! ...And they wonder WHY fewer are listening ::)

Yep... "Baba" is last! BYE BYE! :'(

Nope. After Rush I turned the volume down as I'm in an office and can't have the volume up very loud. Only have the radio on to listen to the station in a few minutes.

Then it's back to XM Radio.


But I agree with your point of shameless ads. I think 96rock is just playing out contracts with advertisers. This gives their sales team new life to try to sell ads on a new format. At least the sales weasels jobs are safe for now.

What About 105.3! I hope we dont get another Spanish Station!! My Family is Hispanic we are from Puerto Rico!! But I cannot Stand the Regional Mexican Music!! I dont listen to Hispanic Music at all! I hope we will get back an 80's Station or maybe Real Radio 105.3!

It looks like Baba O'Reilly could be the last song 96Rock. Teenage Wasteland I guess that describes the core audience that is moving to 96.1 from 105.3. Goodbye old buddy old pal of mine. There goes the nheighborhood.

Yeah, let's hear it for less creativity!! The River isn't horrible, but they don't dig very deep into a vast catalogue of goodies. And The Buzz is simply one of the worst modern rock stations I've ever heard. Big win for high school males who have no clue there is good rock and roll beyond the iceberg tip. I'd be upset about this 15 years ago, maybe. More and more reasons to stick with talk radio and iPod for my music needs.

Baba O'Riley has never sounded so sad. What a shame. I'm glad they ended it where it started. At least they didn't just play the next Fleetwood Mac song lined up in rotation.

In Atlanta, would you rather have the name "96 Rock" or "Project 96 1"?

While the content of 96 Rock's brand has been screwed with way too much in the last 5 years, I still believe they would be much better keeping that name, than "Project 96-1", which sounds like the product of a bunch of 50 year old guys sitting in a conference room trying to keep it real.

I believe they could have repackaged the name 96 Rock by relaunching the music and imaging, but keeping the name. But, obviously the folks at 1819 Peachtree Street are much smarter than me.

Everyone probably knows this already, but Baba O'Reilly was also the first song ever played on 96rock.

Man, I'm suprised at home sad this news makes me. As a former employee of the station (89-95), it is a big part of my past.

An Atlanta radio icon moves into the history books.

Hope I die before I get old? I'm feeling very old right now...

I do blame the Regular Guys, Tim Dukes AND the management of Clear Channel Atlanta, Clear Channel Houston, Clear Channel anywhere....

I would hope that a website is created to remember 96Rock. They where an old friend who has gone to the radio station boneyard. I like to know what ever happen to some of their djs from 1970s,1980s & 1990s. I like to get their opinion of the death of 96Rock. Also,anbody else who worked at 96rock as sales,engineering,etc. Like to hear from them.
Also, what ever happen to Dean Clark of early to mid 80s on 96Rock?
He got a mention on radiotalk on accessatlanta.com

You're right, Native Atlanta. I feel like a childhood friend has just passed. 96 Rock has always been a part of my life and I'm not exactly a spring chicken anyway.

I hope the station is getting flooded with e-mails and phone calls.

I was the promotions manager at KLS from 89-95. One of my favorite memories was going to Jamaica with Chris Rude, Beth Kepple, and Kevin Zeppelin to do a live broadcast from a resort down there.

Also, who remembers Bladerunner and "Renegade Radio?" Bladerunner was one of the most creative jocks working anywhere during his time at 96rock. He burned out quickly (having to have your PD bail you out of jail a couple of times doesn't do wonders for your career), but his work on air, especially parody songs like "Marta-bating" were classics.

The Weekend Whistle was something I would change the channel at five o'clock on Friday to hear, even though I'd heard it a million times already.

And what about those Rude billboards, a parody of obsession, with a Rude reclining wearing nothing but a bannana hamock? Man, people thought we were going to Hell for that.
