96 Rock

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

There is no doubt that at one time, 96rock was a rebel, a leader in promotions and always on the tip of everyone's tongue around the water cooler or at the Varsity table. But that time passed long ago.

What has 96rock been memorable for recently? The RG's double firing? The Braves? Tell me...

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

You'll get no argument from me. The last truly interesting promotion, in my opinion, was the marathon Scream Machine riders, and that was how many years ago?

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

7, maybe 8 years ago??

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

ohmygod the obsession campaign was a thing of BEAUTY. totally hysterical. and i always thought the bladerunner's "vanilla ice cream" ripping off all the most famous r&r riffs was the best. and edited together on tape, not digital, if i remember correctly!

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

You're right, Lisa. We were still using reel-to-reel then. I never could get that damn machine to work right. It played hell with my airchecks. But Bladerunner was a master at it, and God, Willard was probably even better, the way he could throw a tape of a caller on the air five seconds after hanging up, and totally make it fit.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

greg that reminds me of your top 10 reasons for leaving list -- i had totally forgotten that tom connolly asked you if the "tire fairy" was going to fix the flat on the station van! i crack me up.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I worked there five years, and i'm not sure Connely ever even knew my name.

I still have that top ten list somewhere. It included "diving through the hole in the inflatable when the wind blows it over," and "one question- are you high?" Which, by the way the answer was yes, much of the time, thanks to Alan Ayo and Deborah Garner.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

hi tom! i don't know who ty is. i certainly didn't get his/her sarcasm earlier. whoops!

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I worked there, but only as a part-time monkey in the mid 90's for about a year and a half and I will never forget the feeling I had the first time I ever cracked the mic there and said "96 Rock." Call me easily amused, but the short time I had there was the best experience I had in my radio career. Alan Ayo, Williard, Beth and Michael Hughes were so cool to me and had a great little station there back in the day.

I believe I was the last person to say "1996 Rock" on the air too! Like I said, easily amused.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Jumping into the way-back machine: they were great competitors for us at 94Q back in the 80's. Also, really great people. Paths would cross and if everyone was grown up about it (believe me, some weren't/aren't when it comes to socializing with the competition), you'd end up hanging out. Bob Bailey became one of my dearest friends; he's one of the very very best--we had numerous nights at the old Moonshadow saloon...plus, I can remember a few times filling in for Gary McKee on 94 and then getting off the air to meet Mark McCain and Steve Mitchell for lunch (won't tell you where 'cause we're all older and wiser and most importantly married now!). I got to know PD Bill Wise, too--another good guy.

Fun days.

Did anyone get the death on tape?

Did anyone happen to catch the on air death of 96? The begining of the switch?
Just Wondering...... if you did let me know.. Would love to have a copy to add to my aircheck collection. I had to work so I couldnt catch it.

Re: Did anyone get the death on tape?

I may have. I've actually got Audacity recording the online stream at home (because I'm just that much of a radio geek). I'm just not sure if it's still recording or not...I turned it on before I left the house this morning...about an an hour before the switch. It's been recording all day. If the recording is good, I'll let you know (or I'll figure out a way to post it here....someone will probably beat me to it, though).

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

TY = thank you...

no offense taken, wombat, on the lake of sarcasm uptake :)

I worked w/ Ayo & Ditch & Rude and Beth...they were the greatest

Re: Did anyone get the death on tape?

Sorry, man...I lost the stream at about 8:30 this morning....silence from then on. Hopefully someone else will have the signoff/on for you.
