Which, by the way the answer was yes, much of the time, thanks to Alan Ayo and Deborah Garner.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Sad, sad day. Heard from a friend that the old KLS staff is gone.. Jennifer Reed.. English Nick.. Fin... basically everyone you heard on the air, gone. This is a HUGE gamble for Clear Channel. 96 made more money (from what I hear.. a LOT more) than the Buzz ever did.. We'll see how this goes.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

The question really is how much non TRG revenue were they pulling in. The Buzz is growing their audience on a weaker signal and 96 Rock was shrinking their audience so they made a play to merge styles and try to keep the majority of the Buzz audience and a portion of the 96 Rock audience. What could they do with 96Rock continue to let it slide with that crappy playlist. I believe their playlist was play what the river played 15 minutes ago. I think most of you are caught up in your memories. This was not a great station and it need an extreme makeover not a new paint job.

If they keep the majority of the buzz listeners and even half the 96 rock listeners they have a top 10 station inastead of station 13 and 17 in the market.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

I was sad today... I remember my first day at 96 was running the board for Rude's "Dat" show. It was before Prophet. Southside Steve called me from a Haunted House, and rambled for 3 minutes about "Netherworld." He told me to cut it down to a minute, and play it next! I had about 5 minutes. Needless to say I couldn't cut it down in time.
I hated Southside. :) We would later become best of friends. And Rude, Beth, Ditch, Alan Ayo, and Greg Clarkston were all SUPER cool to me. I was lucky to have learned from them. I have a lot of fond memories.

It's a sad day when a legend is put to rest. But most of the time, it's the right thing to do.

Re: Did anyone get the death on tape?

Long time reader, first time poster. Figures it would take the end of an era to get me to post...

But, yes, I did get the flip on tape in good quality. Pick your format and delivery and I'll see what I can do. Got a lot going on until tonight, so I'll convert to digital then and make an mp3 of it.

Good to be here..

Re: Did anyone get the death on tape?

Hey Nightflyer,
Mp3 Will work.. What Im wanting is the actual death. The very begining to the actual flip. From about 855 till 9:05am One of the most unreal things I heard was the heart machine and then the words, " We Lost Him"! Very surreal to be exact. This was almost tear wrenching because hearing that just reminded me of the day that MY ALL TIME FAVORITE OLD FART stations flipped.. WQXI am 79.
Losing 96 was hard too. But my 19 year old son is REAL happy now. His friends and
he are eleated that 96 is playing thier kind of rock. I remember the feeling at that age, a station I could listen to. Well let me [email protected] until then, Thanks.

Day two without 96 Rock...

and it sucked just as much as Day One.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

[Gene Romano, where were you when we needed you?
[/quote]

are you kidding? didn't gene romano hasten the dismissal of chris rude and welcome the hysterically funny and perfect for atlanta john boy and billy morning show? romano aided and abetted this murder.

I thought JB & B was Pat's idea. Weren't they on in Nashville?

To me the glory days ended after the Olympics. Then the sale to Jacor, Lisa, Greg, Taylor leave, Coop to sales (who else is here from those days?) the move to the building of death. There were some high points after that, like the early Regular Guys back when their hats still fit, but when it got to the point where there was no new music that was relevant to the format, the end was clear.

It was a great ride. I was lucky to be along for most of it.

Re: Day two without 96 Rock...

What is this 96Rock you speak of?

j/k

I've already removed 96.1 from #1 preset on all radios i own. Think I'll try to find a 100% static channel to replace it to remind me of times. (easier said than done in Atl these days...all the once static stations now carry spanish, hip hop, or country)

Even if they're playing some of the "old tunes" these new 90s grunge type tunes don't belong on here. They should stay on other channels. Wish 96Rock hadn't been in the CC family so they could have spent some money on tallent and local excelence in music like the good old days.

Death to all Rock & Roll stations does seem upon us.

Thankfully they made the switch on Friday since I don't listen to the radio on the weekend so I wasn't tempted to even find 96.1 or 105.3 on the dial today.

Re: Day two without 96 Rock...

Get over it. 96Rock had totally sucked for years. This wonderful brand had been relegated to redneck rock - with a crappy playlist of the same 10 songs for the past 4-5 years. I grew up with 96rock - Mark and Steve, Bearman and Mitchell, Willard, Katie, Rude, SSS,etc.

But the bottom line is that the station had turned into a freaking joke. What broke my heart was not the pulling of the brand "96Rock", but what the brand had become.

I welcome the change - it was long overdue.......now we just need a good morning show. I hope they keey Jennifer Reed for afternoon - with a decent playlist, this could be really good.

*splut* PAT's idea? oh please!!! he was the cheapest option they had for the pd gig, thus making him the best inexperienced puppet for the bill wise and romano crowd. he might've gone along with it -- but only because he either didn't know any better, or seriously agreed that jb&b were perfect for atlanta. just another classic case of forcing cincinnati's thoughts on the atlanta market, rather than KNOWING the atlanta market.

Re: 96 Rock is no more as of Friday AM

Pat was hired for promotions/marketing originally. He was/is a super nice guy and married one of my favorite people of all time, Cheryl Brenner(so I might add he was damned lucky!)
Randy Micheals was running the show then. All programming was his fiefdom....Pat, my guess is, only did what he was told. But this is the way most PD's were in the 80's and 90's. They basically managed the local research and hired the part timers for weekends....they were not the ones who made the real decisions.
There was a marked difference THE DAY Jacor took over 96 Rock, back in 1997. Randy was a perfect example of a grown man who is emotionally stuck in adolescence. The "redneck/bluecollar rock" sound was all his creation....and it is the ClearChannel rock sound to this day. That day, IMHO, was the beginning of the end for 96 Rock.
