I had worked at the old WPMR years back and was wondering if the 960 signal is still alive or if it's gone dark. I guess Nassau owns it, but somebody told me it was dark. BTW, is there any FCC rule that you must keep a station on-air or forfeit the license? Just wondering.

Chuck!

960 was simulcasting WVPO (840) last I heard. Well, I heard OF it, not heard IT.

Probably still operating non-directional at about 500 watts or so. Antenna system is screwed, and it makes even less sense to repair it now than it did years ago.

I never realized there was so much use of 960 in PA so close together...WATS, Sayre, WPMR & WHYL Carlisle. Hmmm...

Is that the 4 tower array when you first het on 380 North?
When I head to clients in Scranton, I pass that, and someone told me that was 960.

And its operating Omni???

Hmmmmm 4 tower array Omni.... Something smells a little fishy there. I just checked the FCC database, and it lists that freq. as directional.... Interesting....

Well, its is Nassau, guess thats kinda par for the course. But I guess there is alot of that going on w/ AM owners(Like Citadel and WARM) who no longer find it financially feasible to maintain these plants.

I digress... Baltimore Jack is right when he says theres alot going on that 960 freq...

I just asked a friend who drives through the area a lot and he said there's nothing on 960. What's up with that? And, does anybody know if the FCC can yank a license if you keep a station dark?

You can turn a station off for up to 30 days without telling K Street what's going on. After 30 days, you must either notify them formally or you are in violation, and at that point if the stars & planets lined up you could theoretically lose your license for failure to comply. However, once notice is given, you then have 1 year to be off. After that, unless it's a very special circumstance, they take the license & put it in the shredder, and delete the assignment.

BJack,

You are correct....but....once you've formally notified the FCC that you are off air the 1 year clock starts. After one year of being dark the license is lost....with no way to recover. This is a law put into effect by congress. On another note.....yep....a lot of 960 kHz stations close together. This is likely a product of ground conductivity measurements. These stations are limited by very poor ground cond. 960 in Mt. Pocono is directional day away from WATS in Sayre (the first radio station I ever worked at!). I'll listen and tell you if Mt. Pocono is operating Non-DA or not....I know WATS's signal well. It use to have a good signal in Clarks Summit. Its located in a wet hayfield-swamp. You have to walk across a bridge to get into the transmitter building! Its also very near the Susquehanna River giving it fairly good conductivity near its site. With 5 kw Non-DA it gets out well. The 50 watts at night......that's another story.

WELI points towards 145 degrees with a 4 tower array (nighttime) with 5 kw. This is out over the ocean. I am sure that WELI is an important nighttime limit for Mt. Pocono; WIOO, and WATS. WIOO no longer needs nighttime operation; they today applied to operate on an FM translator near Carlisle.

OOOps.....not the first time I've gotten WIOO and WHYL mixed up...WIOO is 1000 moving to 1010 and has the new FM translator. WHYL is 960 and stays it its current condition. You know....I've mixed those up before.

I checked on my way to work when I was on I380. 960 was broadcasting as strong as it ever does - in short I was able to pick it up once I was less than a mile away of their transmitter.
