961 KISS Question

Does anyone out there have any idea at what percentage KISS pitches their music? (I think that's what you call it...when their music is made to play slightly faster than normal.) I perfer the music pitched, I know many people may disagree, but it's my opinion!

Also, does anyone know of a PC media player that has a plug-in or feature that will pitch music? Currently I am using a Winamp and a plug-in for that, but I do not care for Winamp.

Wasn't Bob Seville one of the pioneers of that practice?

I'm using Adobe Audition at home.....you can adjust the pitch then click on "Preview" before committing to changing it. And if you still don't like it, you can "Undo" it as well.

As far as KISS....I really noticed the pitch change last weekend during the Party Pod weekend....a lot of songs had a faster pitch than normal.

I absolutely hate the pitching. It's one of my least favorite things about the station. I'm happy that in recent months they have started to play the songs at more normal speed. It used to be much worse.

Most stations (CHR) pitch a song 2%. While that certainly is faster, I know WESA, back in the day, would wack that funky white boy music up 4 to 5%. Guys sang like women.

When I worked there (late 2004 - 2005), WKST pitched at 4.0%

How much did David Seville pitch Alvin, Simon, and Theodore?

Well, back when Ross Bagdasarian (David Seville) was recording the "Chipmunks," it wasn't pitching as we know it (which was also an option on most turntables then and now--for example, the Technics 1200 and clones all have a vertical fader with pitch +/- 8%, I think).

The Chipmunks was pure unadulterated tape speed altering--record at 1/2 speed, then playback at full speed (i.e., record to tape at 7.5 ips and playback at 15 ips).

So, the only real difference between "pitching" and the Chipmunks is a matter of degree, a little bit versus a lot, right?

Essentially. Pitching is small percentage, and when done sparingly, barely discernable to the listener. 4% is getting towards audible range.

The Chipmunks was double-speed, patently discernable.

If you mean pitching your existing MP3 files on your PC, I like Adobe Audition, formerly known as CoolEdit Pro. Very simple to use, and most stations use it today. I have it on my home studio.

One other distinction re: pitching vs. the Chipmunks (aside from the fact that the fundamental application of the production method is completely for different purposes).

Pitching to brighten music or beat-match is minor enough that the original source material can be used as-is. However, for speed changes done to the point that they were on the Chipmunks records, the original recording must be paced slowly and deliberately so that spaces between words remain appropriate, word starts and endings are clear, and cadence of speech stays on target. As one who has done it in the analog days, recording at 7.5 ips to get something listenable at 15 ips is an art/challenge.

With Audition or ProTools, it's another story ;).
