96rock PD McMurray and GST PD Bruce Collins gone

The housecleaning at Clear Channel continues.

Eight months after Jerry Del Core's arrival, I just got official confirmation that new Tim Dukes replacement Mike Wheeler has let go Jeff McMurray, 96rock PD for about a year, and GST's Bruce Collins, PD for about two years. Searches are beginning for both openings. A new Buzz PD is coming soon, the one that Chris Williams is seeking.

Louis Kaplan at Lite 94.9 is the last Marc Chase-hired PD left standing.

I've had the chance to work with Louis in the past. Love him and his beautiful wife. Bruce is nice but sounds like he got repeatedly pistol whipped when he would go to Danny Bonaduce's evil twin (okay... more evil, then) with ideas FOR THE STATION HE WAS PD OF.

Jeff McMurray, well, I'm sure there's something nice to say about him. There's no use in really bagging on this guy. It's sorta like pointing and laughing at the lonely, fat kid who eats his own boogers-- the booger penchant is likely the least of his problems.

As stated before on this board, the afore mentioned evil twin is the root of the problem. Let's see if Senior Del Core can get HIM out of the mix (and, as it always happens it seems, off to an even better gig).

Weird that McMurray is gone so soon, he just filled in for Southside & Rhodes all of last week and was going to fill in for Fin this week. It's interesting about the Buzz PD- at buzzatlanta.com when you send in feedback it goes to [email protected]

Radio Epitaph

They say you always remember the real A-holes, and the really nice people in this business.

I can categorically say that people will always remember Jeff and Bruce as two of the nicest, classiest, most well respected programmers in the business.

Bruce, in particular, is one of the nicest guys you'll meet anywhere, and well liked by everybody. He's also a fantastic programmer, who was hamstrung by corporate decisions made above his head.

Whatever stations pick up Bruce and Jeff will be very lucky.

Programming out of fear for your job is no way to work. I'm sure he'll land on his feet. <P ID="signature">______________

If that's the case, why were they fired? Did Wheeler just want his own people? Was he just making a statement to management that things are changing? What decisions can a program director of WGST really make?

96Rock is sounding like it should, a classic rocker aimed at guys who remember 96Rock's glory days with a morning show that's much talked and written about. If the Braves get guys to resample the station and discover it sounds okay, then that's served a purpose as well. Don't know Jeff so I don't know how much of a hand he played.

GST is a tremendous and ongoing wasted opportunity. Bruce may be a great guy, but it's obvious nobody from the top to the bottom understands that you win in talk by creating true STARS, then backing them and sticking with them. The Slade/Boortz/Clark/Hannity lineup at WSB didn't happen overnight, but now that it's established, it's lock solid. Stunting is never going to beat that lineup. If you put a gun to an Atlantan's head and demanded they name a personality on WGST, they'd probably just pee themselves and draw a blank. They MIGHT be able to say The Kimmer, but overall, it's personality dependent station without any. A real shame when you're the #2 talker in a city like Atlanta.

I think people would name Rush Limbaugh as the only known personality on WGST. Without him, their 2.4 in the ratings would become a .08

Ouch! I actually forgot Rush Limbaugh was on WGST. So maybe there's a little marketing problem there as well.
