96Rock

Is it just me or does anyone else think 96Rock sounds boring now since changing to "classic rock"? Does anyone know what made them change because wasnt ETR working well for them? Also their playlist sounds very limited now, playing the same 300 songs over and over. I WANT ETR BACK that format at least played some new rock, who else is with me.

I've noticed the same, yankies. With WRDU gone (well, WRDU was REALLY gone WELL before Rooster came on the scene), Raleigh really doesn't have a true rock station. 100.7, of course, is a Classic Hits station. I agree, 96Rock should have more of a 'variety' sound. With the exception of the alternative/new rock that crosses over to CHR, there is no real outlet for new rock.

Maybe it would be a good time for student-run WKNC to take on a true new rock format. They have made a heritage of playing 'college rock', taking on a 'closer-to-commercial' sounding new rock format would fill a real void in the market. I could envision a format there, which plays music from new, mainstream/alternative artists...with some of the college bands mixed in a couple times an hour. Just an idea. However, Raleigh and the surroundings DO need a real rock station. I agree with another post, which said that every market should have an outlet for new rock artists.

I think the new sound is way more commercial and mainstream. It seems to be doing them good because their ratings are a lot better.

I just wonder who put it together. It's a pro sound and I know it didn't come from someone at that station because the music before just sucked. No one wants to hear album cuts and stuff that barely charted. Good for them for fixing the music problem. Now if they would just fix their jocks they would be a monster. Nothing personal but every show is just boring. It's probably the mgmt keeping them down I'm sure. But I hope they either let them do their thing or hire people who can. Just my 2 cents. Peace.

How would you guys feel if 96Rock went to a format like WEBN in Cincinnati has, would it work? I think 96Rock should go back to being THE Triangles Rockstation pre 2006. 96Rock used to be the station that played the cutting edge new rock thats how it beat 106.1 RDU, now that RDU is gone they have picked up the same format. I hate to say it but if another station comes in with a newer rock format 96.1 is very vunerable. During their 13 years as a Rockstation they have had 4 differeent sub-genres. 1998-2001 they were alternative, 2001-2006 Active Rock/Alternative, 2006-2010 Everything That Rocks, 2010-present Classic Rock.

Right now, 96Rock is playing "The Rock That Gets Ratings". Not sure what genre of rock that is, but they are doing very well in the 25-54 ratings. That is their mission.

What kind of rock is WKNC playing?

If 96Rock went with newer rock, they'd have to have some proven revenue reason to do so.
Is there a "cutting edge newer rock station" out there that's successful these days?
Are there even enough newer rock songs/bands to utilize to make that viable?
I don't know the world of current rock, I'm just wondering out loud.

Even Rock103.5 WRCQ seems to be doing more classic rock lately. I think WBBB and WRCQ are just in one of the cycles the "Everything that Rocks" stations are going through every four to six months or so, with the tweaking.

I remember when WRDU played Nirvana and Collective Soul. I couldn't help listening because the station I liked at the time was on 106.1. The problem usually resolved itself by afternoon.

Of course there was the one time it was MY station playing Steely Dan's "FM", and that's when I decided to congratulate them on the job their chimpanzee was doing selecting the music.
