Long time lurker, 1st time poster! I have been reading these boards for years, both Houston and DFW. I am just your average Joe who happens to love radio more than TV. Moved to DFW in 2000 shortly after 105.3 became "Live".

Ok, like I said, 1st time poster and scewed up! Let me start over:

Long time lurker, 1st time poster! I frequent radio-info (DFW & Houston) because I happen to be your average Joe whom prefers radio to television. I grew up in Houston listening to Stevens and Pruett till the end, and that gave me a taste of what is now known as “hot” or ”FM” talk. I never even heard of Stern until I moved to Dallas (except the movie promo & I did later hear a re-run as to why he wasn’t in Houston and they did mention S&P).
I remember the 1st time I heard Russ. I was just passing the Corsicana rest stop (in 2000) on my way to Dallas and he was talking to some chick who had her boobs out. He was making comments about how he couldn’t control himself, etc. and I was thinking “what a DB”! But I kept listening.
I kept listening, and within an hour I was hooked. I listened every day (when possible) until that dreadful day I heard college fight songs. I remember it clearly; I was going to Walgreens and just pulled into the parking lot. The college fight songs started and I screamed “NO!!!!!!!!” I knew what happened (thanks to this board).
Yes, he did get repetitive in the last days, and the band/guitar crap did make me change the station, but he was still tolerable compared to other options. So, you ask who cares. The average Joe cares, the guys who don’t care if he is an A-hole in real life, or how he treats his co-workers. The people who want to be entertained, not befriended. Russ had 3 rules for his show:
1. Don’t believe anything you hear on the radio.
2. Don’t believe anything you hear on the radio unless it comes to him.
3. Refer to rule number 1.

I opt for the latter.

Most of the posters here who're bitter and jaded towards most of the topics are 1 of the following:

1. Used to work in radio, but for some reason or another are no longer in it...As a result, they're taking their pent up aggression of the industry out on anyone who likes something they don't.
or
2. Are currently in radio, but have no long term future in it, and they know it. They've been stuck board-oping over nights for the last 3 years and see people with less experience moving up the ranks, while they're still in the entry level phase...As a result, they're taking their pent up aggression of the industry out on anyone who likes something they don't.

Of course, they will say "I'm not jealous, I just don't like Russ and I'm sick of hearing about him.

The thing is, if you're sick of hearing/reading about him - DON'T READ THE FREAKING THREAD IF HE'S MENTIONED!! By posting and replying to a "Russ" thread, you're just glorifying something you say you don't like... ???

I'm with you.

Other can hate me if they want, but I like the show...well, the last 12 months of it sucked, but before that it was a great program...Entertaining, yet made you think.

As much as he wanted to make everyone think he was a redneck and a hillbilly, he has a brilliant mind.

If anyone want's, and I can figure a way to get them up somewhere, somehow, I bought a subscription to the .info site and downloaded a ton (16 gigs) of his past shows...Maybe I shouldn't do that since there is a copyright warning about sharing the files within the downloaded zip file...(Then again, that's not really stopping me with my limewire)

That would be a real scumbag move. The .info site only costs $7 a month, and all the money goes to the Listeners Foundation. So if you are distributing his shows for free, you are taking money from widows and children of fallen police officers, and you put the future availability of the shows on the .info in serious jeopardy. Don't be an idiot.

Hmmm, looks like SOMEONE has a dog in this fight after all..

I didn't know that site was still up.

Boy, you people must be obsessed with this guy.

I use the .info site every day. I didn't start listening til around '04 so it's as if I'm getting all new shows till he comes back. :)

And for anyone who is a Russ hater that's fine but I honestly haven't found any other talk radio shows/hosts who I find interesting and/or entertaining. I have to go to listening to podcasts to fill the day

If anyone has recommendations of non political strictly entertainment talk radio shows, let me know. ;)

What makes you think he's coming back? He's still under contract with CBS Radio until 2011.

Well, I assume he will at some point have another radio show or something of the sort. As he has been in radio for over 25yrs, I can't see him completely changing professions. I could be wrong...and if I am, I will DEFINITELY need those suggestions. :)

But, again, I asked for recommendations of others who might be funny to listen to who are pretty much non-political. I'm not political at all, so don't like the Rush's, Hannity's, Mark Davis's...etc... And I'm not a huge Howard fan either...so, I'm kinda stuck.

Lets just say he does come back, I don't think he will have JD. did they not have a riff after the format change at 105.3? And what is JD doing now?

I used to be entertained musically by radio. Where did that Go ? ? ?

I got by just fine, without a Morning Drive Team.

Like I say, I used to be entertained by great music, all day and all night long.

So, I poop on the music played on radio and the talkers. Bad, bad, bad.

97.1 ---- Bad talk.... worse music!

No way JD will return with Russ...should Russ return. Ran into him just recently and he is happy and (mentally!) healthy. Laying the groundwork for his own production business- he had great success with that before he joined the afternoon show- and I have no doubt he will continue that success. Nice- normal- guy.

IMHO - JD was one of the the worst on the show (other than Trey and Gavin)... He was a side show when he would drink but other than that he added nothing to the show (couldn't read the news) and added nothing to the band except the tamborene. What a waste of space! Russ will be back sooner than later. Dan is doing overnights on The Fail and Clo is on a make believe station so I don't know who Russ' peeps would be. I suppose he could hire Mondo & Dean but I don't think they are too fond of each other. The Pugs and Russ Show? LMAO!!! Stay tuned.

Rms show was very inconsistent. Stern wannabe, stern copycat, but no stern protoge. We didn't know any better, that's why we fell for it. He's not terrible, but very inconsistent.

I think that's why I liked his show so much. I wasn't a Stern fan. Where Stern came right out and said what he wanted to say, FCC be damned. Russ danced around things. He used double entendres and euphemisms to say what he wanted to say....Made you think.

To me, it was hot talk radio that made me use my brain.
