97.1 -NEW FORMAT AGAIN

I am disappointed. Where now will I hear the Bob & Tom afterparty, or the Bob & Tom brunch, B&T rock lunch, B&T afternoon coffee break, B&T afternoon drive, B&T overnight pre-show... ?

I wondered why they didn't go this route when they first stole Bob & Tom, this is a much better pairing. It's still a bit early to start that "What's Bud's next format?" thread, though... isn't it?

...because Bob and Tom can be found on many classic hits stations.

The powers that be convinced this station that Bob and Tom would work out with the tower format.

Obviously they were wrong. Local in the morning is the better way to go.
Any monkey can see that.
Um...on second thought...would you want monkeys to run the place? :D ;D ;)

What's this? They going away from Classic Hits. I've been busy watching March madness the last tow days, I have not payed much attention to this 97.1 thing.

I say the time has come for Nashville's Deep Dish album classix. (Deep cuts classic album rock radio)

The time has come again.

Come on SEC!!!

Oppps. I guess I missed the post that told of the new format. This briliant new formated started today Friday March 21? LOL

What another station that plays Korn music?

Oh well. LOL

Well, Another format change on one of Cumulus's station: This time 97.1 sounds like it's going "Active Rock" for a while. One wonders how long this will last? They take thier worst staion in the market, the one that has bad ratings, and play "format of the day" with it. I guess Lew has nothing else to do.

I heard a spot on WSM-AM that Cumulus has gone into the Human Resource business as well. I guess they will be buying stock in Wal-Mart before it's over with.

While we're waiting for "the big change" to occur, ponder this: remember back when they were Star 97? Their logo was everywhere! Billboards, t-shirts, coffee mugs, key chains (remember the "at-work club"?), ballpoint pens, and those foam rubber things you put around your drink cans to keep your drinks cool. Then, while they were Oldies 97.1, they continued a lot of that type of thing, but mainly put their logo on license plates, a la Oldies 96.3. But what visibility have they had as the "Tower"? They sponsored the Zoo Run Run, a 5K race at the Nashville zoo, last year, and they had this giant inflatable juke box out there with "Classic Hits 97.1 WRQQ" on it. (Remember, this was while they were pounding their call letters into our heads! ::)) I think they were out there sponsoring the the zoo run again this year, but I don't seem to recall any of their presence there. You would think with this new "tower" campaign, they would have "tower" all over everything they could print that logo on! But that was just not the case, was it? ::) This tower was kinda like the tower of Babel. It fell before it was ever completely built! Other than Bob & Tom billboards, I just have not seen any real promotion for this station over the last couple of years. And since "Crumb-ulus" has owned the station all along, I don't understand why they haven't promoted this latest incarnation of their station the way they did back in the Star 97 days.

Then it was everywhere except the website until later :( . Was the Tower a good station? I never bothered to listen to it.

Notice that they called themselves "the NEW 97.1 the tower" right up until the format change! ::) I told you they would! ;D

I still wish they would can Bob & Tom! But I suppose that is just wishful thinking! ::)

I'm just glad they finally took a blowtorch to the tower, and cut it down! ;D How many "tower" analogies and puns can we come up with? The tower has fallen!

I wish they would just call themselves Q97 or something like that. The digital frequency is really not necessary anymore. At least they are just "97-1 RQQ," not "97 point 1 RQQ." And I'll even give them brownie points for NOT going back to WRQQ! That was really annoying when they did that two years ago!

Not so. I'm listening online and heard a "Tower" liner. Mistake?

What's their website? I tried 971thetower.com last night and got one of those "dummies" sites? Are you local? I don't recall seeing your name on the Nashville boards. If so, welcome! If not, where are you listening from? I'm here locally, so I don't need to listen online, but I would like to check out the website if I could find it. Thanks.

The site is still the Tower at: http://www.classichits971.com/ and am not local but I'm listening from Waukesha, WI where I currently live.

They updated their new site at: http://www.971rqq.com but it's currently under construction.

Interesting as I lay here on the beach between Pensacola and Ft Walton. Was driving to dinner last night listening to a station down here 99 Rock wondering why this type of station would not work in Nashville. Maybe it will get a shot. Heard The Doors, White Stripes, The Who, The Killers, AC DC all imaged nicely. Great sounding jocks also. They were engaged with their listener.

Nock

[EDIT-inflammatory]

On the actual topic - So far, so good on 97.1. It sounds better than it has in quite a while - some one seems to care and give it a good shot. It will be interesting to see what happens. B&T are going nowhere - not as long as the contract Cumulus signed with Clear Channel stays intact. Must have been a pretty sweet deal.

Being, make that, preferring, to NOT listen to another joke from Crumy. Has anything happened, yet?

^Your afraid this Romer dude's gonna fart and your not gonna be around too smell it.^

I'm sorry: did I pee in your Wheaties?
BTW...the use of "DJ" in your signature pretty much outs you.

Thanks, icycool. I can't believe that 97.1 didn't register the "tower" name for their website url while they were using that name. I have looked at that site before, but just didn't remember the url.

At any rate, their tower logo (seen only on that website and nowhere else) looked great, but simply slapping a "new" name on the same "old" programming ain't gonna cut it! Listeners are more savvy than that! The "new" tower, my eye!

At least, the news story on the homepage of this site had one thing wrong: they aren't referring to themselves as the "new" 97-1 'RQQ.

Here's what I was referring to, from the homepage of this site:

Nashville's Classic Hits "the Tower" falls - Now it's "the new 97.1 RQQ", with PD Aaron Roberts

What exactly does that mean for the format? Well, Bob & Tom stay, and now the music on WRQQ will fall more in line with them: Classic Rock that "really rocks", meaning more tempo than its previous "Classic Hits" sound. Cumulus started using "the Tower" moniker back in September 2007, but it didn't seem to help the station's image. For now, the WRQQ website still says "The Tower", but the change to "really rocks" officially took place Friday morning at 10 am. Listen here to the transition. Incoming PD is Aaron Roberts, previously at Toledo's WIOT. See what the boards at Radio-Info.com are saying here: Discuss It

I have not heard them refer to themselves as the "new" 97-1 'RQQ, and I hope I don't ever hear that!

Driving down the interstate Sunday I was channel hopping. What do I hear, but 105.9 and 97.1 playing the same exact songs for about thirty min. I kept flopping back and forth between the two, and 105.9 cut a song in the middle and started playing there own music. Both stations were then different. What is this about?

Didn't think this all the way through...huh.
