97.1 -NEW FORMAT AGAIN

scottwmro said:
In the early 80's when Kiss released the "Creatures of the Night" Album, that whole string of tunes in that album was PURE ROCK, no bubble gum. Cuts like "I love it loud" and "War Machine" were great. This was not Heavy Metal, just pure hard rock.
I just can't consider "Rambin Man" from Greg Alman a rock song, it's more country sounding. Southern Rock has more of a lite county twang. It's medium sound rock, but it don't kick butt.

Greg Allman can kick Gene Simmons' butt any day.

Rambling man is a song that has just absolutely been played to death. That song had a country rock feel to it for sure, but the point I made was a radio station such as 105.9 could also include other songs from the Allman Brother's disography. "Every Hungry Woman", "Dreams", "Hot Lanta" and from that same album that gave us Rambling man, how about, "Come and go blues" or ""Jelly Jelly". Those songs were played in the days of "underground rock" radio. WKDA FM largely ignored those songs, but hey they were WKDA FM and by 1973 that station was pretty much heavily leaning to top 40ish type sounds. Clark Rodgers kept the underground tribal drum going after midnight. Not to bash KDA FM. I know Walton and Eskew are lurking around in here and I have nothing but the utmost respect for them as broadcasters and programmers.

What Scott would love to see is a more "Kick ass" station. That is probably the kind of rock radio that can work in today's radio world. I understand all of that.

Still, there are rays of hope. Jim Ladd out at KLOS FM does a free form show every evening from 8 PM to 1 AM. He plays deeper cuts and based on what little I have heard of his programs, his shows on KLOS FM are more of a true freeform show than anything I have heard on terrestrial radio in years. KLOS FM lets him do this so there is hope!

I'm not bitter, just an opinion. Can you please cut back on the 38 special, Molly Hatchet and yes i did hear Skynyrd. I thought this was a change, I thought we were trying to be fresh, fun and different.
Nothing wrong with any of those groups; it's just time to hear something different on the radio from these groups than what we've heard from them for years now! For instance, from 38 Special, I heard "Wild Eyed Southern Boys." That's a nice change from "Hold on Loosely," and certainly NOT something we would have heard on the Tower! ::)

--I guess my vision of a Real Rock station is a real ass kicker, you know, one that is between the sounds of Posion, Kiss, Great White, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Dokken, etc--

The problem with that music Scott is it wasn't good enough to stand the test of time. Stones, Zeppelin, Doors, Seger, Skynyrd, Eagles etc. has a much wider appeal than bubblegum hair metal like Dokken or Poison.

Chris Romer --- if you're on vacation without tellins us, you're in deep sand.
You have become amazingly silent as of late with this RQQ stuff. Are you
and Gerry House planning afternoons on the new real rock 97.1 rqq???

I have gone a week without kissing up ...

vacation? moi?
now that's funny.
as for 97.1...I honestly don't care enough about them to comment.
in fact, since Sebastian left, it's no fun to make fun of Cumulus.
sidebar to Jack Shell: I realize Sebastian is an excellent programmer...but he just made
himself an easy target with his giant ego and numerous internet postings about himself on dating sites!

Well Chris ole buddy, it's time that this 97.1 subject is put to rest! Let's come up with something else we can get the natives stirred up about. This conversatation on 91.1 is getting old and who cares about Sebastian in match.com, eharmony, yahoo dating, etc. Those are Bill Buntin sites (HA!), just tell Buntin to type in "G" for Girl!

Well my friend, what do ya think, it's time for me, you, and Tibbs to break open a bottle of Arbor Mist to to hell with this subject. I'm tired of reading and talking about a corporate group of Bozo's that don't know "beans" of what the public wants!

Let's go track down some pirates and bust'em!

Scott: Like the frequencies of a radio, Arbor Mist offers a vast variety of formats and flavors ...

Pick a flavor and let the good times roll...

Blackberry Merlot
Cranberry Twist White Merlot
Exotic Fruits White Zinfandel
Island Fruits Pinot Grigio
Melon White Zinfandel
Mixed Berry Pinot Noir
Orchard Fruits Chardonnay
Peach Chardonnay
Sangria Zinfandel
Strawberry White Zinfandel
Tropical Fruits Chardonnay
Winter Berry Merlot

the Winter Berry Merlot must be your favorite as the WMRO call letters are included in order...

Trying to be all things to all people. 97.1 is a train wreck ... all over the place, some really burned out Classic Hits, Classic Rock and tossing in a newer cut every 1/4 hour-. So...lemmie see... I'm really confused. If you like wimpy rock, will you tolerate the newer active rock cuts? visa versa? Personally - I'd rather put my head in a gas oven than listen to Cheap Trick or Lynyrd Skynrd or Billy Idol... yuk.

Don't know about you guys - but since I read about this format flip I've been toggling between 97.1 and the Buzz. Don't know what's going on at Buzz, but it's vastly improved... they've become a very focused, balanced Active Rocker. New imaging, backselling, frontselling - Crap! It's like they know what the hell they're doing with the music. They've just won #1 position on my preset. No easy feat.

I like classic rock fine, but I tune into Sirius The Vault or Classic vinyl to get my fix. At least I won't be bombarded with burned out cuts.

Yep, looks like Buzzy is not taking 97.1 and the predictions of its own demise lightly. The loudmouth girl billboards are going back up all over town, most replacing those newer V102.5 billboards. This is going to be a good fight between the two stations. The Rock could very well end up as the outsider on this one.

Check out www.wkms.com out of Fort Walton. Why can we not get a station that sounds like this? I agree with the formula in place at 97.1. What about throwing in The White Stripes, The Killers etc? Thank god for a 15 and 16 year old in the house to keep me musically young. Go ahead TIBBS, I can already feel the reply.

Nock

What??? I 'gree with you. Having onced competed against 99 Rock with a good Classic Rock
station, I have to give them credit. The stations been around a long time and has managed
to stay progressive. It's not like they couldn't steal the playlist for nada. The only scary thing
is you have now entered the land of publicly being pro-Crumulus. How does it feel? You may
now be unable to drink from the perfect radio punch --- Arbor Mist is only for those who
don't like the mark of the beast - 9-7-1.

On a lighter note:

Did you bring me back any sand from the world's most beautiful beaches??? I guess I will find
out Tuesday/ ;)

And for the record --- I enjoy the fact that I dunno most of the rock playing on 97.1 late at
night. Makes me feel young again. I like the Killers, too. What's happening to me?

I like "The Vault" on Sirius, but "Deep Tracks" on XM is much better in my opinion.

I never thought I'd hear the day when Bad Company would be called wimpy. LOL I listened to 97.1 later last evening. I think 97.1 sometimes dips down into the second tier of songs now and then, you know that second tier of tunes that classic rock stations dip into on those A-Z things? Anyway, not to be critical. As of now they are sounding better than 105.9 and the Buzz, well I never tuned into the buzz anyway. lol The Buzz clashes with my Albert King and Canned Heat tunes so why bother listening ?

I know I show my age with the Buzz, but my listening to the Buzz would have been similar to my Grandpop, who listened to Perry Como music and Rosemary Clooney music, listening to Iron Butterfly. Just never happened.

Correctamundy

I just read my post, it should have read "I do not agree" with the formula in place. Pass the Arbor Mist please.

Ah Man ----
I had Perry and Rosemary on a c-d in my car today.
I'll work up to Blood, Sweat and Tears next week, and Lead Zeplin next week....
I'll gonna have to consult with Romer. ;D

we'll be starting with spell-check...it's Led Zeppelin
take a look: http://www.ledzeppelin.com/
I'm trying to imagine "Catch a Falling Star" into "Black Dog"

"I had Perry and Rosemary on a c-d in my car today. " i've offered on many occasions to bring ole bud into the modern era..65 to 75..but alas..the shell dinner hour seems to have inflicted permanant damage...in the words of como's last hit.."it's impossible"...... ::)

Nock, I believe that's WKSM.com

97.1 1/09: All polka, all the time!

Who's Perry & Rosemary? Gee Pat that's before my time:

Hey I have a great idea. Let's bring back the "Shell Dinner Hour" on MRO to include such tasty ROCK cuts as:

Ted Nugent-Cat Scratch Fever
REO Speedwagon-Ridin the Storm Out
Cheap Trick-Gonna Raise Hell
Foghat-Slow Ride
Aerosmith-Sweet Emotion
Alice Cooper- School's Out
Poison-Nothin but a good time
Kiss-Rock & Roll All Night

"The following cuts brought to you by Shell, where our gas will ROCK your car, and we'll throw in a free bottle of Arbor Mist with each 30.00 purchase of gas! Keep it here to "The Shell Dinner Hour" where we play nothing but kick ass ROCK!

Now that's real radio to drive Big Foot out of his grave!

Since I spend the biggest part of my life somewhere between 1970- 1975, I guess I can be critical of the older folks. Hey , we are now the old folks. Geeze that is depressing.

These young kids call what I listen to old stoner music. LOL
