97.1 or KCBS to CHR

CBS Radio is reportedly shaking up its formats L.A. to CHR to compete with Clear Channel’s KIIS-FM, according to Radio Business Report. With the new Portable People Meter favoring CHR, CBS is contemplating moving a station to the format. In L.A., the stations under review include ratings-challenged KCBS (Jack) and talk station KLSX-FM.

Huh? KCBS-FM is consistently in the top 10 25-54.

Complain to RBR. They're the one who started the rumor.

JACK is consistently top 10 persons 25-54 and is the No. 2 biller in the cluster at over $40 million.

KLSX has been growing every month in PPM following programming adjustments made by Jack Silver. I believe Mr. Silver toward Don Barrett about the weekly growth which has KLSX No. 1 or 2 men 25-54 in middays and afternoons I believe.

I guess if you look at 6+ - which is what RBR did, you can make those arguments - but no one buys those demos.

All Access has also joined in on the rumors of new CBS CHR's in both New York City and Los Angeles. They, unlike RBR, did not speculate on any stations specifically but did post that CBS has no comment.

I'll put my money on 97.1 to switch. Remember when CBS tried this in LA years earlier with I believe KKHR- 93.3?

RGM

All I can say is if CBS decides to run a super cheap jukebox it will have absolutely no impact on KIIS with its strong personality lineup of Seacrest, Jo Jo Wright, etc.

I think CBS should leave 93.1 JACK FM alone and bring CHR to 97.1 to challenge Clear Channel's 102.7 KIIS FM. 97.1 KLSX is very boring radio for Los Angeles. I think Talk radio should stay on the AM band in Los Angeles. Now if Jack does move I think JACK should go on 94.7, then classic rock should return on 93.1 and CHR on 97.1. ;) Nick, KN3ICK

As mentioned in other thread, JACK has become stale. They need to revamp it somehow and give it new life: whether that is DJs, bringing back the old bigger playlist, who knows.... Some kind of gimmick or new idea, for that is what got the station going in the first place. The main initial gimmicks....

- "we play what we want"
- JACK voice making snide remarks
- train wreck musical juxtapositions
- songs on the air you hadn't heard in years
- no DJs
- no anything else (no news, no specials, no morning shows, etc)

....have all lost their novelty.

You don't blow up what has been a ridiculously successful radio station throughout its entire existence; it's been the #1 English language station in the market in adults 25-54 for most of the past 3.5 years, hasn't it?

It was only No. 5 English language in the Holiday book - so I guess since it's No. 1 anymore - and Scooty doesn't like the music - CBS should blow up $40 million worth of revenue.

JACK still rotates a lot of songs in and out. They haven't tightened it as much as Scooty thinks.

I've been predicting on this site for months that the FM Talk format was on it's last legs on 97.1. Yeah Leykis has done well in the PPM, but his heyday is long gone. The format has become stale ever since Howard bolted to satellite and Bob Moore is gone. Leykis is on hiatus this week which does make you wonder. I think KLSX is going down!

97.1 is flipping after this week. But it's not Spanish. It's a 3 letter word..hmmmmm.

Tom Leykis can now go into retirement with a nice paycheck for doing nothing the next few years and then if he's bored maybe he'll join Bob Moore at KABC, but he wouldn't fit into the right-wing talk on that station.

Well he and Rush Limbaugh were on the same station in the past. RIGHT?

Have KCBS's 25-54 numbers fallen in the past 6 months, or did the switch to PPM allow (just guessing here) KRTH, KBIG, KOST & KIIS (not sure about the order) to pass them in 25-54?
