You must think of Salem Broadcasting, CC doesn't own a Christian format.

I believe they have at least one, an FM in Austin.

CC has a CCM station in Austin, TX. CCM = comtemporary christian music

Clear Channel also used to have a CCM station in Nashville that was called "The One". They ended up blowing up the format and going with a CHR/Rhythmic after a year or so.

Has anyone else noticed that the selection of Christmas songs on 97.1 seem to be very spiritual? Especially compared to KVIL.

By the way Eric, "The Fish" is a Salem trademark.

Yeah it's KPEZ/102.3 formally the old Z102. I'm not sure how it does in the Austin book, however it's been there at least a couple of years as far as I know. And I think that they have a local morning and afternoon show.

What is this about 97.1? Did they flip to Christian or something?

I drove through Austin a while back and stumbled across KPEZ. What concerns me is that if CC tries that format in Dallas, they will bump up against KLTY - the two stations would be too similar.

The only possible Christian audience niche in Dallas not covered by existing stations would be a HOT-AC Christian format, similar to the WAY-FM in Denver. Not all young people are into Christian rock like Power-FM plays, and certainly "family-friendly" KLTY has a big gap in listenership among teens and 20's. Program a youth oriented Hot-AC format with a lot of Christian hip-hop, you might snag an audience among people disenfranchised by the music on KLTY and Power-FM. But it would take careful programming by somebody intimately familiar with the music. I don't see a KLTY clone doing anything in the ratings.

Clear Channel has a number of black gospel FMs, which would qualify as "christian" stations as much as CCM stations.

And you think Clear is concerned about being similar to a station that is in the top 5 25-54?

Clear, if they are considering this, has to know that 97.1 can rip KLTY based on signal alone. On the other hand, KLTY has a strong and significant heritage; I would believe that heritage does matter in a Christian station. So beating it has to be more than signal.

But if someone does a good job of programming on a better signal, KLTY is awfully vulnerable based on coverage.

I'm wondering if this format, which has long TSL and a lower cume, might be an underperformer in the PPM, though.

Huh? They are both on the same tower, with the same power, and their antennas are within a couple of feet from each other.

Perhaps you are thinking of when KLTY was on 100.7.

Right... my bad. I forgot the move back to a full C after the went from 94.1 to 100.7. All the less reason for Clear to consider this format... unless they think KLTY is for some reason vulnerable.

Might as well hang a sign on the studio door that reads, "Gone Fishing"... :p

Known as "Hallelujah FM". Would be nice if we had one here....

KLTY's signal is just fine - I can hear them in places in Northwest Houston. Right now 97.1 is stunting Christmas - English Christmas - and playing a lot of Christmas songs by Christian artists. So a flip to CCM is not out of the question.

Perhaps CC is content to share audience with KLTY --- but the flip would have made more sense in Houston. KSBJ would be very vulnerable to a true CCM station. But then - maybe Mega is next.

Too nichy - not a broad enough appeal. As KSBJ discovered to their detrement when they had live reports from a SG festival. It sure PO'ed the regular listeners who don't want any part of SG.

Try 1630 AM and 970 AM if you like that stuff.

We don't need another CCM format, KLTY is doing really well right now.

Christian Music is different than Gospel Music.....There is some crossover from KHVN and KLTY...but not much.

There are a whole bunch of praise and worship and preaching stations - I don't know how they all make a go of it. There is only one CCM station in town, and one Christian rock. So perhaps another CCM could share the audience. KLTY is vulnerable with kids and teens - if CC narrowly targeted Christian kids with a CCM station aimed at the KKDA KISS type of musical taste a lot of kids might listen. I see them in droves at the malls - going into Abercrombie and Hollister with daddy's credit card - the type of kid advertisers compete for. I got no hope a CCM could unseat the powerhouses the kids listen to now, but if they get them for 10% of the time advertisers might take notice and put some dollars behind it. KLTY doesn't want those affluent teens - they leave them to secular stations now. CC might be on to something, as long as they keep the boring praise and worship OFF the station and find some real Hot-AC and Christian hip-hop.
