97.1 The Sports Animal

The Sports Animal is on the air at 97.1 and it SUCKS. All from OKC so who cares?
Edited by Tulsa on 04/06/06 01:20 AM.

At it's worst, The Sports Animal is 10 times better than The Buzz.

Wow, it's just a refeed of OKC?!? I was under the impression that certain dayparts were going to be local! Maybe the Stephens crew feel that the Tulsa area does not have enough sports related topics to demand local programming?! Thoughts anyone?

They were foolish for changing the format in the first place.

I seriously question their motivation in the first place.

You know they will not spend one penny to market the station. The local talent is fairly weak on 97.1. At best, they should leave on a complete simulcast of OKC.

I'm sure they had a proffitable reason to switch. Even if you personally don't see it right now.

What do YOU think the motivation was?

Did someone there tell you this? Or is this just your assumption? If it is an assumption, what is it based on?

I've heard varying opinions on the local talent. But I've heard at least as much positive as negative. Personally, I'm not really qualified to comment since I know precisely jack about sports.

Gary is correct. Just like everyone out there (even STONES ROCK) we want to make a profit. There is a huge market for FM sports talk and this has more potential than the country format. The county market is very crowded in Tulsa with 3 stations. There is no talk product on the FM band. Nobody else has had the guts to try it.

And you never know what kind of marketing will be done. You may be surprised. Don't underestimate the new station on 97.1. I'm sure the SPORT BUZZ isn't writing this one off. They should be very concerned. We have had several good phone calls from people that switched from AM 1430.

I would like to see comments from others that have sampled the difference. Your input is appreciated.

I think it's great. The argument that the Sports Animal is all a simulcast out of OKC is wrong. There is a local midday show with Big Al Jerkins of KJRH. And besides, even if everything else is a simulcast out of OKC, that still makes it more local than the Buzz, which just has the one local (horrible) afternoon show.

I listened to 97.1 again today and heard Pat Jones on the air.
Is he really moving to Tulsa to be on the station?
If so, nice hire. That is impressive to have someone like Pat host the show.

You should read the article on that site, and other articles about the Tulsa Sports Animal. They have hired a sports director for the Tulsa station. Pat Jones will be heard almost exclusively on the Tulsa station, and The Sports Cage show is also a Tulsa exclusive. From what I hear, more local Tulsa stuff to come.

Like I say, even with one local show, it's more local than the Buzz.

Just for the record, even though it is fairly obvious- the user that goes by "kxojdj" is NOT an employee of KXOJ. I am absolutely certain of that and I do not even work there! ;DNow, as for the Animal- I've seen billboards up all over town, they signed Pat Jones, several of the Tulsa World Staff, a Sports Director (Kevin Ward of OKC background), a couple of the other tv sports guys (although Jack Bunds is absolutely HORRIBLE on radio), and I've heard them do quite a few "remotes", so they must be pleased with their new start. Kevin in case you read this, I really enjoyed your call of the class 6A baseball championship last night!Brad

I love this new station I listen to it most of the day and I do like the format with the local Tulsa show. I enjoy the Big Al and Pat Jones tandem and having a new guest from the World or TV is a good idea, I also like hearing the OKC hosts as well pretty good station all around.

The only thing that annoys the hell out of me is the music they play to cover the OKC animal's commercials and promos just before the host is about to come back on PLEASE IF YOU ARE GOING TO COVER THE PROMO USE SOME DIFFERENT BUMPER MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(that guitar is getting old!) other than that I love the new 97.1. Please change that music before I am forced to turn the radio off for 30 seconds so you can cover the OKC promos.

***applause***

He never answered Gary's questions...which means he's a poser!

So what's everyone think of the new morning show from 9-11?? Has the station gotten better since the launch or is it still just ok?

Re Marketing for Sports Animal.

I don't follow sports, but I've seen some billboards in Tulsa for the station.
The billboards are really well done, you couldn't miss them.
They may be pulled down by now.

I pick it up pretty well driving in from Owasso to Tulsa in the mornings... Then depending on the weather throughout Tulsa pretty good...

yeah...it sounds pretty good. I used to live in Owasso and I could get it just fine.

It may not stop on scan in Tulsa....YET.

But you can get it just fine pretty much anywhere in the metro if you want it.
