97.1

And the first promo will say, "After nearly three years of the moon over Mexico City, the SUN IS RISING ONCE AGAIN! The all-renewed SUNNY, 97.1 !! Now, with less Christmas music per hour than THAT OTHER STATION..."

And, in the same vein..."Mornings, with Fast Eddie Re-Coyle!" (and count on "Middays, with your old favorite, Ken Barnett!")

Blast from the past (and future?): http://www.knus99.com/keglsunny.JPG

Actually, Preciosa barely got beyond 2 years... August of 2005 to November of 2007. 26 months and a few days.

You're correct, or at least more correct than me...8/25/05 to 12/01/07. "Sunny," FYI, ran only 15 months and one week.

If the station returns to AC, will there be a return of their old promotions team, called "The Sunny Sunbeams"? You can bet if that crew walks into my office, they'll be run out. I never saw them, but I can just visialize these youngster radio wannabes, male and female, with sunflower petal masks that surround their little faces, with green costumes and sleeves that look like leaves, and shoes that look like roots.

Based on confidential information, I have it on authority that...

.....concerning the new format for 97.1,

I know,

absolutely nothing. ;)
On pins and needles to hear what CC is gonna do.

YOU

ARE

CRUEL. There's a jumbo piece of coal waiting in your CHRISTmas stocking.

I'll keep my fingers crossed it will be a new smooth jazz station! That would add alot to my life here in the DFW area! :)

Lite AC = my 2 cents
Smart man.

That's the way I see it too. KVIL is still vulnerable (and horribly positioned), and KLUV is drawing in a lot of people who just can't find an acceptable alternative. A well programmed, well positioned lite AC could make some serious coin...

Well, we know it's too much to ask for anyone to re-create the old KVIL (esp Clear Channel) BUT perhaps a mix (pardon the term) of Pop AC "proven" currents AND a good share of 80s and 90s lite-to-medium AC...something that won't completely alienate the male audience...and you could indeed draw from both KVIL and KLUV. And, God forbid, set some sort of minimum energy level so listeners aren't dragged down with Whitney and Michael Bolton overkill, or too much of the modern slow crooners.

And sure, make a play for Ken Barnett and some of the STRONGER talent from KVIL of yore...and let them talk and interact and built a relationship with the listener. Liner cards are OUT. Voicetracking is OUT. Cookie-cutter formats are OUT. Hire someone who knew and lived the market during the KVIL era and let them program the thing.

Nah, first thing CC would say is, "That's competing with MIX! We can't have that!" (BTW, does anyone really listen to Mix anymore, anyway?) Well, perhaps THAT'S where you blow out a tired, aging, cookie-cutter format at 102.9 and put on Smooth Jazz instead. Install a real CBS competitor on 97.1.

Methinks that Steve knows something...he knows WAY too many people! ;D

HERO Radio...the format that never really got off the ground, sounds like what you are describing. I think it was H (high) E (energy) R (rockin') O (oldies). All monster hits- some 70's, 80's and a few 90's.

I like the HERO acnonym. Very clever. I remember the ARROW format that Dave Van Dyke created. He said he got the name when he was scribbling on a napkin when working on the format and he wrote "All Rock & Roll Oldies." But I secretly wondered if the name came from back when Dave worked for me at W4 in Detroit & he dated a secretary there named Arrow.

The name game. Shirley Shirley Bo-burly, banana fana, etc. *

* readers under 50, please ask an old dude to explain that to you.

You know, there is probably a joke here involving our lil' buddy, Robert Bass. BUT, I'll leave that alone as my Boy Scout good deed for the day. ;D

Wasn't the HERO format developed by Jim Zippo? (There's one connection to Mr. Bass...him being Zippo's biggest fan!) ;D
