97.3 The Coast

Is there a reason why Cox doesn't freshen the sound of this station up and move towards Hot AC. Lincoln Media has the Mainstream AC format dominated for decades. Hey, Donnie Michaels don't be afraid to show some creativity and stop playing the same 9 songs that people have heard 4000 times in the last 15 years.

Strangelove, was that a reference to Los Angeles' Coast, where for years, the weather reports would end in...."and it's 83 degrees (VERY LONG PAUSE) ... along (ANOTHER PAUSE) ... The Coast!"?

Then 97.3 must have ripped them off! (or they ripped off 97.3, maybe?) I last remember them using it back in the late 90s and first hearing it in the late 80s when they flipped from classic rock to AC.

KOST in LA came first.

My favorite was: "A-1-A... Your music way."

Yes....When Coast first signed on in May '90 (after being Rock "97-GTR"), they used formatics similar to KOST's, among them the "......along the COAST!!" temperature check. Sometime around 2000-ish I believe, they added "personality" to WFLC and did away with alot of the original formatics, among them, that one.

I used to have the 1st and 2nd day of Coast when they first signed on, but I lost them in my travels. As I recall they were very mellow, although I was very angry that 97.3 changed format. I really liked 97GTR, but after the death of Patty Murray the station was never the same again. I'am very surprised that after all this time they still remained THE COAST.

Wow....old Coast airchecks from the first 2 days....what a shame to lose them.

The first few days were interesting..They called it an "Introductory Offer"....I think Mitch Lewis was one of the original voices for the production work, which, of course, was all dry....A new thing for Miami at the time...Also new was an AC that played no 60s ("Best of the 70s, 80s and 90s").

One of the things I will always remember was the jock staff, before they actually hired anybody new for the new format...They used the 97GTR "Rock N' Roll Animals" as 'liner readers' ("I'm Brent Alberts!!!" "I'm Randi Rhodes!!").

May 1990? Yeah, that seems about right now. I was a young'n at the time, it all sort of blends together.
