97.3 WKBC Modification

To add to Scott's answer...

One of the "Rural Radio" tools the Commission uses is seeing that the proposed community of license is "truly independent of the urbanized area," if the proposed TX site does violate the 50% coverage rule Scott mentioned above.

One of my former employers tried to move one of their stations from one rural town (population ~3000) to a tower in the nearest large city (population ~180k) but the proposed CoL was a small suburb, which would receive "first local service" on the edge of the 70 dBu contour.

I'm not sure of all the details, but the Commission required a showing that the proposed new CoL was "independent", and the licensee and their consultant decided they could not make such a showing, so they allowed the application to expire.

Roger on that. If you can't prove it, don't try it. Besides, sounds like that'd mean the rural town which was the present COL, wouldn't have that (maybe any) radio station serving it.

When I moved here about 20 years ago, I remember 105.7 was still a Charlotte area Station (with a Country Format) with similar coverage as WEND or WKKT, and that station also had secondary coverage in the Triad ..

It was WFMX, a hertitage station in the Statesville area, but it was moved to the Triad soon after (now WVBZ).
I think this eventually made it possible for 105.3 WAGI to move further east toward Charlotte.

I remember listening to Hoyt Herbert's Bluegrass show, which was first (I believe) on Friday nights, then moved to Sunday nights, in the NC Piedmont, most every week and even when visiting family in the Boone metro. Reckon I may have heard him in the Shelby area as well, but I was probably trying to call Hello Henry LOL. Well, I called him a time or two in Greensboro, even going back to the 'BIG simulcast days, but I'm rambling more than normal, now. I tuned into the station (FMX) other times, but that memory just jumped out at me. https://www.discogs.com/artist/4179...hbn18FO8vvPkBY1Y-NjK0GsFjiudbQm2wTevObSBcqg_a

WFMX had a tower much farther north than the other stations. But then by reducing their coverage area, they were able to move to Greensboro. The really tall tower is gone.

They aren't in Greensboro, I believe they're licensed to Clemons, if memory serves. Oh and speaking of the old WFMX, I am told that Garland Faw used to have a Sunday night broadcast on there, back when he was in Chattanooga and had The Eleventh Hour Singers. Of course, he was originally from the area and an active member of Landis Baptist Church in Landis, NC, until moving to Chattanooga for school and that first pastorate.

I think its because WFMX was sold to CC/Iheart, which already owns Country 96.9 WKKT Charlotte and 104.1 WTQR Greensboro, so perhaps it was moved (or divested) as to not compete with themselves in format and coverage, which was/is very similar to 96.9 Kat.

Good points, but 'TQR is licensed to Winston-Salem, The Camel City, as some folk have called it over the years.

WTQR was moved out of Winston-Salm years ago, and the market is called Greensboro.

When was 'TQR moved out of Winston and is licensed to Greensboro, now? Yes, GSO is the market, just thought you were referencing the COL, which, as far as I knew/know, is Winston-Salem, going on current mental info.

No, no change in city of license. I misread that. WPAW and WKZL are licensed to Winston-Salem as well. And when I was in college, those were the top two stations.

Gotcha, thanks. If memory serves, I believe 93.1's first call I remember, was WSAZ, Z93. They they were WMQX as AC, then Oldies. All the time I've known 107.5, it's always been 'KZL. I've seen they were the old WSGH, though. First (and only) place I've seen that call, is 1040 licensed to Lewisville, from like '86 or '87 on.

WXII has its tower there, which is why I haven't been able to watch since 2009.

Huh? That tower is where WXL42 is located. My Pawpaw, who lived in the Shelby metro part of the time when I was a kid, used to watch 'XII every Sunday morning, Earl Carney's (sp) Southern Gospel music show.
