97.3 WKBC

Drove around Charlotte over the weekend, and heard this station which seemed to come in well throughout the area. They played a lot of general pop and rock and sounded pretty good. I didn't hear much in the way of identification, though, and every few minutes there were what sounded like phone numbers being dialed rapidly which was odd. I'm just wondering what this station is? Are they local at all? How's the coverage in the area? Other than that, sounded great.

97.3 WKBC-FM is based in and licensed to North Wilkesboro, NC and has a booming 100,000-watt signal. The signal covers the High Country, Foothills, and Piedmont. At my last check they were using Jones Radio Networks' Hot AC satellite format around the clock.

Their studios are in N Wilkesboro and their format is satellite delivered from what was or still may be called Jones Radio Networks -- Dial Global bought Jones earlier this month. I think it's a great Hot AC format and you will hear stuff not being played on a Charlotte station. Interestingly, WKBC is or will be relayed on a Charlotte translator at 93.1 according to this site:

That is potentually exciting news as it will help their signal in Charlotte. They are pretty strong all around the area except for some of the more urban parts of the city with the added noise that brings. This translator should help with that. It is one of the better stations in the metro...

They are Mostly Jones, but not 24/7. They carry Appalachian State football and basketball, and they the flagship station for ASU. Also, I believe they go local in the mornings in the winter time due to the weather in the High Country and foothillls.

I think charlotte needs a local hot-ac station again. 107.9's ratings have dropped and wonder if they may change back to hot-ac.

I drove near Gastonia a couple of weeks ago to the Shelby hamfest (Dallas NC) and noticed 107.9 was still running all talk. They sounded great with the "Link" moniker and the tunes in the mid 90's. Whose bonehead idea was it to do talk? Bob & Sherry were'nt bad with the music mixed in.

I don't know whose idea it was, but there's music pretty much all the time during short breaks. Like at the top of the hour when an AM station might do news.

WKBC was playing "Freeze Frame" by The J. Geils Band last night when I checked in. Fun song. I remember it had an interesting video too.

Is Bob Brown still the owner? Potter Broadcasting (his mom) put on WATA - Boone and he put on WTLK - Taylorsville to blocked competiton in North Wilkesboro - later he bought WORD in Spartanburg and WLAK in Florida. A tough driven man.

I agree. 93.1 {country station} comes through pretty clear on the eastern end of the charlotte region.

I was pretty sure 93.1 from Winston Salem was already listenable, but spotty on the eastern edge of the area....... and like I said, would reak havoc during band openings.. and overall, would be a poor choice for a translator, but if it's their only choice... it's better then nothing.

WKBC has nothing to do with it other than being the originating station:

http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws...t=25&appn=101250485&formid=349&fac_num=157782

Obviously not, it'd be ill-legal, against FCC law for WKBC 97.3 to have any sort of relationship with the translator, other then being the program source.
Why would it be illegal for WKBC to own this translator? Many FM stations own translators within their coverage areas On the other hand, why would someone from Greeley, CO want to rebroadcast WKBC in Charlotte? Exactly--it makes no sense whatsoever. Most likely this translator, if it's ever built, will end up rebroadcasting the satelite feed from some far-flung "religious" station. FCC regs do not allow radio stations to rebroadcast their signals far outside their normal coverage areas--at least in the commercial (92.1+) band. But many "religious" stations apply for a translator, saying they are going to rebraodcast a local station, the when the translator comes on it mysteriously broadcasts a station from the other side of the country. Its against regulations, but they get away with it anyway....

Commercial stations can't OWN a translator that is outside their 60dbu contour, which this one would presumably be....

Im betting the owner of the translator is friends with WKBC somehow.
