97.3 WKBC

WKBC North Wilkesboro, NC once had a decent signal in Charlotte but no more. Leyendas 97.3 FM - Monroe - Charlotte NC now covers it up.

I can still hear WKBC in Gaffney SC (tho weakly) even with 2 Spartanburg Sports Translators on Neighboring channels (97.1 & 97.5) From Less than 20 miles away.

In that case, I can no longer hear WCOS here.

Back in the 1980s in a shopping center across the street from the studios of what is now 96.9 the Kat, there was a store that sold stereos in Statesville. The strength of the station's signal was shown. WKBC would go up into the red zone, but the tower for 96.9 was too far south to show more than green. That's after its first tower move to start getting people in Charlotte to listen.

96.9 has moved since then and the new tower is taller than it was to start.

Also, oldies used to be on 97.3 in Asheville. I had to be patient because if I tried to listen too soon, I would get WKBC. For a translator, the Asheville station reached quite a long distance.

Pepperidge Farm remembers when WKBC won Creative Loafing's best radio station of Charlotte for several years.
I believe so did WLNK back in the personality format days.

97.3 WKBC Should Still Have Good Coverage North of Uptown Charlotte / Northern Mecklenburg & Suburbs, especially the Lake Norman area.

I heard them into Virginia up Interstate 77 til Interstate 81 (Wytheville) and over towards Winston-Salem (with interference from stronger WQMG on adjacent 97.1)

Well when you go up that steep mountain right before you cross from NC into Virginia, you can receive radio stations from everywhere. Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Asheville and more. And even into Galax and some of those Virginia border counties you can pick up Charlotte signals. Unless some new translators have emerged to block the signal in the several years since I have been up there.

My troubles with picking up 97.3 WKBC from Mint Hill, NC began in 2018 when the Monroe 97.3 signed on, causing a discontinuity in the reception. I must admit the interference continues into Midland, NC in Cabarrus Co. up Albemarle Road, NC 24-27. The signal of 97.3 WKBC comes in fine for me in the Hickory Grove area on WT Harris out to Harrisburg Road and most of East Charlotte. In South East Charlotte, not so much starting on parts of Albemarle Road, most of Lawyers Road, Idlewild, out by McApline Park, and even into South Charlotte on 51 and Providence Road (Exit 57), after that it comes in overall and is crystal clear at Carowinds and all of West Charlotte.

But you get 100.9 in your area, right?
