97.3 Yes! FM Lubbock - first few days/first thoughts

97.3 Yes! FM has been on the air for several days now. What does everyone think of it?

Ramar's media kit describes it as 'adult contemporary', and the All Access news story described it as 'female leaning classic hits' (which makes no sense to me since their tag line is '80s, '90s, and NOW); I'm not sure where they got that. Does it feel like a Hot AC station?

Speaking of that All Access news story, it was funny on the same day a Wilks station in Reno flipped from alternative to Hot AC as Mix 100.9 using KMMX's logo (slightly tweaked for the frequency). I always thought their logo was both decent and unique.

I like the jingles on the station. I'm glad this station has a consistent format finally. Stars should have been gone a long time ago. Like I said in the previous thread, it seems kind of like a Mix 102.9, except with a lot more 80's music. I've heard some good songs so far...some that I haven't heard on the radio in years. Overall, not a bad playlist IMO.

If there is anything I dislike so far, it's Rick Dees in the morning. It's boring to listen to. And his jokes are just awful and unfunny. Makes me want to plug in my iPod honestly.

I can't rate the local morning show yet, because they are not starting until next week.

Good to hear that about Yes! FM. I wish them success.

Ahhh, but I'm a big fan of Rick Dees. He's a radio legend. I first heard him doing the 'Weekly Top 40' on Z102 when I was a kid. He made me want to get into radio (and ironically I ended up on the air at Z102 back in the day). I remember meeting him at a remote in Las Vegas when KIIS FM L.A. started a simulcast on then-KFMS there! I was excited when he re-surfaced on Hot in LA this year... I guess I'm a little partial :)

Not sure if my endearment for Dees carries to KLZK's target demo... it might, or they might end up with a new morning show after a while. I know he's cheap right now (I think it's all barter at this point.)

The 80s is 30 years ago now. Playing 30 years of music sounds like classic hits to me. Even back in the 70s it was not unusual for oldies stations to play some compatible currents to keep the format fresh.

just thinkin' If you were in the demo for CHR or HOT AC, would you want to hear your "Currents" mixed in with songs from 20-30 years ago? when i was in the demo for CHR or Hot whatever, that would have had me listening to a CHR that was also playing Glenn Miller & Lawrence Welk!(YUK!) the NEW morning show starts 9/19, Ramar went all the way to Lafayette Indiana for this "Amazing" Talent... rob creighton(not sure of the spelling)..heard his demo, don't think it justified the moving expense, judge for yourself monday... from what i hear from the canned dees & kent shows, it seems they record "Drop-Ins" that can be used on most ANY format, there is NO interaction to the music that is being played, just like the tesh show.

Sure... you can call '80s and '90s classic hits, but the 'now' part of their format is not 'classic'.

I guess they skipped the last decade (the 2000s). WWFS/Fresh 102.7's positioner is 'the '90s, 2k, and Today'... ;)

I agree with whodat about mixing 80s and currents. Several stations around the country that were 80s, 90s and today last decade have dropped the 80s.

97.3 can't play CURRENTS and be an 80'-90's station, AND they can't play 80's-90's and be a ANY kind of "Contemporary" music station to ANYBODY. THIS IS A TRAIN WRECK!

they should have picked ONE of these formats and "Specialized" in it.
with Z, 100.3 and the beat going after the contemporary audience, i would have bet on 80's & 90's! its NOT being done here, and NOT with this format. Ramar has re-packaged DEFEAT.

There is no "Z" in Lubbock, 102.5 is KISS FM, and has been for 3 years

Finally got to listen to the morning show a bit today. Boring. Yes FM is stars with a new name. Bringing in a midwestern jock to read show prep won't save this station.

You are CORRECT! they have 1 "Live" daypart and it sounds like the rest of the canned shows, only worse..why bother. i guess its their formula for Failure.

I have to say that after having more time to listen, I agree. I do think this is better than Stars but still overall a boring station. What fun is a station when most of the talent isn't local? I hate to say it but I thought this station seemed promising (as you see with my fist post regarding this station) but i've already found myself bored with it. Looks like it's back to internet radio/iPod for me. :'(

their TV stations look pretty good, in fact they may have the best news strip in town BUT, i look forward to the day ramar sells off the radio properties to someone who KNOWS how to do radio and ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT IT. (magic/hispanic does ok, probably because no-one at ramar knows what they are saying or doing)

You sound bitter, they must have fired you.

Honesty is a matter of perspective, I would say getting the tech rights was a huge success for that building

I HAVEN'T SEEN IT TRANSLATE INTO RATINGS NUMBERS YET...

Double T is a success any way you slice it. Their numbers have been good and their sales situation is very good. I think the only problem with Double T is on air talent, the morning show is absurdly bad for example. Noon and afternoon are much better in comparison but even those shows have some holes.

please site the numbers.
as far as Texas Tech Sports, IF it ONLY benefits Double T(and if you're going to have an all sports station its a no brainer) it DOES however HURT the MUSIC stations that have to carry sports and interrupt their formats, in several markets where i've been involed with sports on a music station it Has ALWAYS been the case. if sales are nowhere i guess its "something" to sell on a music station that is floundering but it will drive away more format listeners than it gains any new ones, and most of those won't stay when the music comes back.

I don't have numbers in front of me but the numbers I've seen are good for an all sports station. They have rendered KKAM nearly impotent, their numbers have crashed. The company I work for has advertised with them and I can tell you the advertising dollars for them are coming in and ultimately that's the name of the game for a business owner.

double t is still Mid-Pack with ratings at best, and revenues may be up during the peak seasons for football and basketball, but who is listening when nothing is going on with Tech? are people anxious to get those track & vollyball scores, in the off season? they still don't know what to do over there with kkam, so my guess is they'll do nothing, they have no overhead, they really pay nobody FT wages, so without knowing what to do with a 1000 watt am station, aside from selling it(who would want it?), it will take 0.5 quarter hours from double t for some time.
