97.5 FM, London Ontario

I have no inside info, but the domain name "boom975.com" was registered by Astral on May 13, 2011. That's one possibility, especially if they wish to fill in some of the gap left behind by CKSL last winter when it flipped to all-comedy. As of right now, my father is listening to CKWW Windsor to get his oldies fill.

Variations of virgin975.com have also been registered... it doesn't mean anything.

Going BOOM would be stupid with More and Bob in the market, unless it skews older than the Toronto and Ottawa properties and is similar in sound to Fab 94.3 Winnipeg.

CHR seems to make the most sense, but don't be suprised if it's not under the Virgin brand.

With the London market, the problem is that there is a risk of going "too young" with Virgin radio (that's why Energy London went away)
Or perhaps going "too old" with Boom, sounding a little too much like a Vinyl 95.3/Fab FM type of station.
You just can't win!

In other Astral news, Rick Hodge makes his return to radio at EZ Rock in St. Catharines...just saying...But yeah, 97.5 should go Top 40. That way, it could give Fresh a run for its money.

In many markets CHR is #1 or #2 25-54... It's not 1997 anymore... playing the Drakes, Pitbulls and Nicki Minajs along with the Katy Perrys, Maroon 5's and Pinks no longer scare the money demos away...

CHR is a definite possibility. Aside from X FM from Fanshawe College, the closest CHR we have is 91.5 The Beat from Kitchener/Waterloo. I know a number of people who listen to that.

London's problem is the lack of a young population that drives. Sure, there are young people, but they go to Western and use London Transit, and generally don't listen to radio. Young people who drive generally aren't living in London anymore.

In August 2005, the Energy Radio brand was folded completely and CFHK rebranded as "103-1 Fresh FM", due to the fact it could match the current CFHK calls.

Dude, I didn't say 1997 was when Energy folded up. My point was, using a 15+ year old argument that CHR skews too young for the money demos is no longer valid.

Energy wasn't even in London in 1997. As I recall London was without a CHR station from 1993 to 1998, as CKSL flipped from CHR to news/talk in 1993 and Energy took over CKDK Woodstock in 1998, and that was a country station before that. The BBM book I've seen from 1995 had FM96 firmly in first place in London, which of course was at the height of alt rock. Young people in those days were listening to FM96, The Hawk (also rock), and 6X (Fanshawe College). I believe the rise of Energy had a lot to do with the rise of the Backstreet Boys and other boy "bands" of the era.

As I recall, Energy had already moved away from CHR towards Hot AC as early as 2003. They kept the name but changed the logo, and they were the last of the Energy mini-network to still use the branding. This may have been in response to Star 102.3 (Hot AC) flipping to BOB FM.

And I'm saying it was August 2005 when they decided that their audience on 103.1, using the Energy format was too young.
Ratings trump your point.
