97.5 looking to stay local in midday

I've been told by a buddy of mine at Cumulus that 97.5 thinks they will have a great shot at Lance Zurline as their midday replacement for Dan Patrick from 12 to 3. He seems to be very certain of that for whatever reason. One of two things will happen here. 610 might just cut Lance loose to save money and let him go to the radio wasteland known as KFNC or he will be able to at least post a number in the arbitron ppm measurements. Regardless of his talent level (or lack thereof), I don't see any way that he will be able to save them. Is letting an on-air talent go 97.5 even better than a non-compete? It sure seems like it.

ESPN went to 97.5 because 790 wasn't clearing enough of the national lineup. Now 97.5 is adding more local? The folks in Bristol won't be happy.

Of course when one or two of the sports formats fizzle, it will be interesting to see if and where the displaced shows land. There might be enough local talent amongst the four players to make two decent stations.

There might be. Then again, there might now. If Lance goes there, I predict he will be a free agent again within a year. I don't think anyone would touch either of the guys from the afternoon show. Calvin Murphy is doing a show there tonight which should be interesting.

I was going to say the exact same thing, Mediafrog. I thought that was the main contributing factor to ESPN's relationship with KBME ending. Like dbsforest stated, Calvin Murphy started his show tonight at 6, and then there's Craig (la,la,la,la,la) Roberts new show starting soon. Hmm....get ready Houston. ESPN 1560 is on the way. :p

I would just prefer it if they stuck with sports. It seems like everytime I tune it in, they are simulcasting KIOL. It's bad enough that format is on one station, we don't need it on two, especially since you're billing yourself as a sports station. KFNC needs to do some local programming, if they are going to compete with the others. Anyway you slice it, it's going to be an uphill battle for them and KBME against 610 and 1560.

I think you need to go buy a new radio. That just doesn't happen.

It's happened on more than one of my radios.

Their studios are in different locations. Their transmitters are in different locations. They have no reason to simulcast. Despite your frequent assertions, it doesn't happen.

I think you should buy a few new radios.

Radioman, he is correct. There have been a couple of instances when 97.5 has simulcasted KIOL within the last 6 months. Not sure why, if they were having satellite feed issues from ESPN or what, but it has happened. Oh, and if I'm correct, KIOL-KFNC-KRBE are all in the same building on Westheimer now. If they haven't moved yet, KIOL and KFNC are still on Post Oak together, with KRBE on Westheimer. They may have studios in Beaumont and La Porte to satisfy the rules for COL, but they transmit everything from the same set of studios in Houston.

All of Cumulus' operations are at 9801 Westheimer, where KRBE took up residence around 1980 or 1981. The sign in front of the building reflects all of their Houston, Houston/Beaumont and Houston/LaPorte stations.

I can see it happening while they were moving the studios, but it's certainly not the everyday occurrence some are making it out to be.

KIOL doesnt need ANYthing in LaPorte....remember the rules say main studios can be ANYWHERE within city grade contour,
so Beaumont could count as main studio location for 103.7...even though the Cumulus location there doesnt have "active" studios for KIOL or KFNC...(they likely have a prod room they can put on the air...but from what I have heard, all their on air studios are used) I havent heard if they moved 103.7 and 97.5 to the KRBE location....but I heard that was the plan.

I hate to admit when I'm wrong, but I am man enough to do it. I don't know what happened. I have two of the same brand of radios that have digital presets with RDS displays. For some reason, when I was pressing the presets, it should 97.5 and then the RDS read out would say ROCK1037. The other day, after Radioman's post, I tried to tune it in manually, and got sports. I re-saved the positions. I don't know what could have happened?! But, I am sorry to Cumulus (even though you're still a sorry company) and I'm sorry to Radioman, and thank him for pointing that out. I'm going to tuck my tail now, and walk the other direction. :-\
