97.5 now stunting

and perhaps Cumulus is ready to return this station to where it belongs. At the top of the hour, it is identified as KFNC - Beaumont.

At 10am just the legal ID of "KFNC Beaumont" was given also. I do wonder if Cumulus is having second thoughts of pulling 97.5 out of The Triangle Market. On June 20th, 2006 KFNC was granted a Construction Permit to move from Beaumont to Mont Belvieu. To this day Cumulus has not acted on that CP to make the legal COL Mont Belvieu. Most companies would have had a Request for License in to The FCC with-in a week. It would make more sense for KFNC or whatever new call letters are used whenever the flip to ESPN occurs to be a Beaumont station that has some Houston coverage. God knows that Houston does not need a third Sports station, hell we don't need two. I'm sure there are towers in BMT that KFNC can move to, if spacing is not an issue at this point in time.

When is KFNC going to make the change to ESPN? I do not think that they would stunt for very long. I realize that contracts come into play here and there is very likely a set date that 97.5 is to pick-up the ESPN feed.

Well to be honest with you as an avid sports radio listener here in Beaumont, it wouldnt suprise me if the station is just in Beaumont. There is an ESPN radio station in BMT on 1450 AM called "The Ticket". They carry Astros,Cowboys,Rockets,UofH football, along with regular ESPN programing. The station can not be picked up at night what so ever. As a cumulas station its the sister station of a country radio station in town that use to be on 97.5FM. But, since then moved to 101.7. So if it will be a station that will move from 1450 to 975 here in Beaumont then Im all for it!

I would expect 97.5, which will also be called "The Ticket", to take the place of 1450 and ESPN will probably be removed from the AM station. 1450 will then join the ranks of useless Cumulus AM frequencies, joining 1510 AM in the race to become the most irrelevant AM station in southeast Texas.

Well I read on the TV/Radio notebook on chron.com that the full switch to espn wont be til Jan. 15. They are looking for people for afternoon sports host that will begin on Feb. 1. I co-host a weekley sports radio show at another station here in Beaumont so I say if they are switching from 1450 to 975 then bring it!

No thats not unusual. I remember 106-9, IDing as "KKHT Conroe" just before becoming "The Point"

What are they stunting with? Cant listen now.

KFNC has a lot better coverage to Houston than KTXX does to San antonio, I never understood why KTXX has it saying San antonio. More like Victoria and even then thats a rimshot. It'll be kind of nice having a Sports station on the FM since all of them die out on AM at night where I am.

97.5 used to be KAYD (from the early 50s) and 1450 WAS KAYC, its sister AM; when Dave Morris owned the stations back in the 70s, Dave also owned KNUZ 1230 and KQUE 102.9 in Houston but made more money off the BMT stations! 1450 is on a 5/8wave tower east of I10 (On Blanchette) in Bmt...same tower it always has been for DECADES; in fact, the old 12 bay 97.5 antenna is still on it (why they didnt remove it, I have no idea..I would have it done to reduce windload and possible other issues) 1450 never covered well outside of BMT well with its tower at 250watts night, much less NOW with 1KW at night (with all the other 1450 stations powering up)....KOLE in Port Arthur would usually have better signal into BMT at night than 1450 did into PA at night...but the larger audience was in Beaumont anyway. What this means for 1450 now with 97.5 becoming the ticket is anyone's guess....possibly a move of 1450 back to the Gospel format that is on 1510 and dump 1510??? HHmmmmm

While in Beaumont for Christmas, I noticed the following:
560: still has audio/music underneath the program audio...HELLO CC?? that was fixed years ago in the 70s (with 94.1 KBPO on the STL tower flooding the studios with RF)...you cant fix it NOW??? What gives?? and PLEASE FIX the audio on 92.5!
990: Audio IS TERRIBLE....extremely low and almost non existant...sometimes NO audio (dead air)
1150: Still playing Hispanic/Mexican music...and terrible signal (must still be on the horiz longwires.....no CP for the new towers)
1250: Occasional dead air......geesh
1450: same thing but not as bad; sounds ok when there IS audio
1510: LOTS of dead air at times..
1600: not bad....still live with music! Needs to make sure they switch to directional at night more often though ;) and I would think going AM Stereo for cheap today would not be that big a deal (Hey I have a Stereo Exciter and monitor I can sell them for $300!)

1340 and 1380 play more promos than anything else for FOX News Radio......guess they cant sell spot time so they beat their own chest...

Don't get your hopes up, Stan. When 103.7 first came on the air and stunted as TV 103 it ID'ed as KUST-La Porte. As soon as ESPN comes on the air at 97.5 it will add the Houston ID back on, and most likely be (insert new calls here) - Mont Belvieu/Houston.

BTW, did anyone notice over the weekend that KFNC was broadcast in Stereo, while KIOL was broadcast in Mono? Now it has been reversed back as of today?

I noticed it was in Stereo over the weekend but was the broadcast in stereo or just the signal? I didnt listen long enough to see.

Meanwhile, we have a day of the otherwise difficult-to-find "Hard Ambient" format gracing the Houston airwaves. Anyone know what this stuff actually is? Not like internet radio where you have artist/title.

I noticed that it was in stereo for High Fidelity on Sunday evening, and during part of the time they carried Christmas music.

As of Midnight, 97.5 now airing ESPN Radio News, I think. It almost sounds like ESPN TV, but hey have stopped with the sports calls over the horrendous music bed.

2:15 AM Wednesday morning and it's audio of the ESPN News TV network. Commercials are being covered up with local KFNC radio spots (Planet Ford, etc.).

i know this sounds crazy. but espn radio last night said that an espn classic radio network was coming soon. could this station go to that format? even though that would be a bizarre format at best ???

That would be cool to be able to listen to a full broadcast of a moment in sports history, but I think that the ESPN Classic Network might be a satellite radio only station, I just don't see how it would work in the terrestiral band.

neither do i. but the fact that its coming and the classic clips are being played is kind of strange.
