97.5 now WPEN-FM

I heard the station for the first time today while at an appointment. Why did the imaging folks at Greater Media use the word "just" in their liner, "It just sounds better?" Why isn't it simply "It sounds better!!?" The word "just" instantly reduces the impact of a statement. To take the phrase literally, the only positive of the move to FM was the sound clarity, NOT the programming that comes along with it. Just a thought that I sometimes pass on to clients who don't realize they are negating the positive intent.

The last time we had a WPEN AM & FM was back in the 70's

But back then it was "WPEN Philadelphia, WPEN-FM Philadelphia"...although
I wouldn't be surprised if they IDed it with that "AM & FM" crap. <roll eyes>

Now it's "WPEN Philadelphia, WPEN-FM Burlington." Doesn't sound quite as
good. Sorry, Burlington...but after all, Burlington is in NEW JERSEY! <wink>
(Think Fred Armisen as NY Gov. Paterson on SNL.)

The legal ID during last night's Yankees-Angels game was "WPEN-FM Burlington Philadelphia, also heard on ESPN 950 WPEN Philadelphia."

And assuming there's no FM HD1 and/or AM I-CRAP involved, completely legal too!

Each station IDed separately with calls and COL, any non-legalese superfluity before
the calls ("ESPN 950") or after the COL (the "Philadelphia" following "Burlington").

That "non-legalese superfluity" is entirely legal ... quoting the FCC:

TITLE 47--TELECOMMUNICATION
CHAPTER I--FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CONTINUED)
PART 73_RADIO BROADCAST SERVICES--Table of Contents
Subpart H_Rules Applicable to All Broadcast Stations

Official station identification shall consist of
the station's call letters immediately followed by the community or
communities specified in its license as the station's location;
Provided, That the name of the licensee, the station's frequency, the
station's channel number, as stated on the station's license, and/or the
station's network affiliation may be inserted between the call letters
and station location.

So ... WPEN ESPN 950 Philadelphia is fine ...

10-4 on that. I just didn't think of ESPN as a "network" as I tend to think
of nets in the traditional sense--ABC, CBS and the like. Hey, has anyone
seen the Mutual Broadcasting System around lately? (Bee-doop.) <grin>

But they didn't say "WPEN ESPN 950 Philadelphia." They said "ESPN 950, WPEN Philadelphia," which is correct within the letter of the law, whether ESPN counts as a network affiliation or not, because nothing is between the calls and the COL. ESPN 950 is not technically part of the legal ID at all.

Back when WJFK-FM Manassas, VA and WJFK(AM) Baltimore had the same shows on the air from 6a-7p (Stern, Liddy, Don & Mike), they would play a single legal ID that went like this:
WJFK FM and AM Manassas Washington Baltimore.

So many different things wrong with that, but they did it anyway.

Before WTOP in Washington moved to FM, they had a string of legal IDs like this:
WTOP Washington, WTOP-FM Warrenton, WXTR Frederick

Followed by some translator calls on 104.3 in Leesburg, VA.

WFAN's legal ID is now:
WFAN, WFAN-HD and WXRK HD-3 New York.

I could be wrong, but wasn't WXTR (104.1) licensed to Waldorf or LaPlata? 103.9 (the old WZYQ) is considered a Frederick station, but it is licesed to Braddock Heights.

The 104.1 (now WPRS) is licensed to Waldorf, MD. The WXTR that the poster is referring to is 820AM out in Frederick; since the WTOP simulcast moved to 103.9, the 820 is now WWFD, relaying WFED for the many government workers out that way.

104.1's COL was originally LaPlata, MD. For years they ID'd as WXTR LaPlata/Waldorf. They did a COL change to Waldorf at some point in an effort to improve the signal into DC. Prior to the call letter merry-go-around, the simulcast partners were WWZZ Waldorf/Washington WWVZ Braddock Heights/Frederick.
