97.5 - What I would do

If i was in charge of 97.5 I would take it in a classic dance format and call it

Q 97.5 The Valleys Classic Dance Connection

Where the beat never stops

I think classic dance would do really well in phoenix. Plus it is friendly enough to be in offices and of course those soccer moms would love it! I would focus on about 1975-2000 but every year add another year into the mix. I would get the playlist to be as broad as the "jack" format and promote the hell out of it. I would get jingles that sound like KTU in NYC, make references to points of interst in and around phoenix. If available I would grab the calls KUKQ and use them as well. Well thats what I would do. I think it would be an easy format to do and a format that could bring in revenue and ratings!

Or they could GUARANTEE better ratings and stick with dead air.

Maybe KFNX should change to KUKQ and play retro dance music. They could use a 1976 Ford conversion van with shag carpeting, heart shaped bubble windows and a giant CB antenna for promotions. They could drive around the valley pumping pure AM stereo through horn speakers and use girls on disco roller skates to hand out free transistor AM radios (you know, the kind that look like giant headset ear protection the guys at the airport wear).

They could stunt with commercials for great 1970's products like: Pet Rocks, Pocket Fisherman, Mr. Microphone, Chia Pet, Inside The Eggshell Egg Scrambler, The Smokeless Ashtray, 1976 Gremlin & Pacer...the list goes on and on.

I bet advertisers like K-Tel, Ronco and Prell shampoo would be dying to jump aboard.

Classic dance??? Sure! Why not some other "classic" formats:

If I was in chage of 97.5, I would go with one of these:

Classic New Age (97.5 The Wavortexspirit)
Classic Jazz (Dull 97.5 The Yawn)
Classic Big Band (Dirt Nap 97.5)
Classic Bluegrass (Kissin' Cousin 97.5)
Classic World Beat (97.5 NDUKU Ka Ka Poo)
Classic Polka (97.5...Yer Darn Tootin' Polka-All Accordion ALL THE TIME)
Classic Classic Rock (97.5 Grateful They're Dead)
Classic Porno Soundtracks (97.5 Chick A BOW BOW)
Classic Broadway Showtunes (Off 97th)

Classic Porno? Makes as much sense as what most rimshots program. Sure, why not?

Why not have a sense of humor about it. Before Mr. azenergyfan gets offended, the post was stictly in jest. I'm sure everyone was shocked by azenergyfan's mold-breaking, outside the box format recommendation for 97.5! Who would have guessed?

I think that the Classic Dance format is probably one of the more viable choices. An Adult Urban with Tom Joyner in the AM followed by Wendy Williams and Michael Baisden followed by a local evening show and overnight from the hardrive is another alternative that would be low cost to operate. Another attempt at "Hot Talk" is a third option bringing Don and Mike and Tom Leykis among others back to the Valley. Final choice would be the WCRB Classical Music format-also from the satellite. The people at 'CRB claim that all of their affiliates rank well and have very healthy income because of the high income level they appeal to and the easy sell to like minded accounts as well as the ability to compete and win audience from the local NPR Classical Music stations and advertising from the commercial underwriters that they have. Comments?

Adult Urban. That sounds like a decent idea. A strong rimshot just might be the key for filling the gap that Art Mobley's KMJK (Static 107...er Magic 107) left back in 2000.

With the proposed rulemaking changes allowing simpler FM allocations, there will probably be enough rimshot FM signals to eventually find Hot Talk on FM in Phoenix.

Commercial classical in Phoenix? NAH. I also highly doubt all of their commercial affiliates have "very healthy" income. Any satellite programming provider will force feed that kind of bs. Feenix ain't reddy for no dang uppity fiddle music.

Why? It's a separate survey area. Would you suggest separate commercial feed for the other signal, and, if so, what about the overlap zone in northern Maricopa County?

I am not sure a commercial classic station would work given the range of coverage...to the north you have the Class C -100,000w Classical KNAU-FM (NPR) out of Flagstaff with repeaters in Prescott, AZ (K207BR 89.3 FM) and Kingman, AZ (K209AN 89.7 FM). On the south end you have KBAQ-FM's stick out in Glendale. Even though they are only pushing 12,500 watts they still get a good reach north with that low band allocation.

I also speak from experience of working at the last commercial classical operation in PHX, then 106.3 KONC -which flipped to the Edge format soon after KBAQ-FM signed on.

This would be great if you're on eastern or central time. There really aren't any good syndicated urban personalities that cater to the west coast. You'd be better off either running live and local or pay good out of market jocks to track for you.

That sounds like a 0.8 waiting to happen. And I happen to like listening to Leykis myself...

I remember the moment KONC switched from classical to alternative. The first song played on the Edge was Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus". I bet it was a huge shock for the person listening to KONC. We used to joke about their call letters and wondered why they didn't come out with a bumper sticker that read "KONC if you're KORNY".

Have to agree with you about the viability of a commercial classical station...especially in Phoenix. IMO, it's destined to remain in the public broadcasting domain where the truly intelligent and cultured intellectuals can be found ;)

ouch. that really stings. can't we all just get along? Humor makes things interesting. I, for one, enjoy the humor of others and how it lightens people up. In general, radio is not fun anymore. Does talking about it have to be researched, tested and bleached beforehand too?

Besides, I had a point. Sorry if you felt put down. Apparently, you've never really been "put down" before. As thin as your skin seems, I hope you never are.

Because KTAR needs to be able to reach all of its Phoenix-based audience, many of whom are on the road or having fun in northern Arizona and cannot hear 620 or 550 very well.

Because a regional AM format needs to cover the region.... the region in this case being Greater Phoenix, Arizona.

Because KTAR needs every advantage it can get over the competition. Covering northern Arizona with a clear signal would impress Valley residents that KTAR is the place to go for talk, news, traffic and sports, no matter where they are in the state.

All the billboards and bus ads in the world can't buy that impression.

Prescott, the Verde Valley and Flag may be a seperate market, but the movement between N.AZ and Phoenix is considerable.

No, I doubt the dollar a holler spots from northern AZ would pay the KTAR salesguy's petrol bill.

Especially when the valley temperature hits 110 the first time each year.

But, since the Coconino and Yavapai Cty. area is not in the MSA for Phoenix, how would they monetize the acquisiton?

Coconino y Yavapai counties are not in the MSA, but a large percentage of the PEOPLE in Coconino and Yavapai counties are.

Phoenix MSA residents - likely KTAR listeners - are in Flag or Prescott or Sedona or heading to the Rim. They're out of Phoenix but they are Phoenix MSA residents.

Every tenth of a ratings point means monetization for the big AMs. Since they don't have a big stick, get a second stick!
